Brand new are hundreds of dollars each, but there are plenty of good second hand ones around.
Did they go off? If so, you will be up for at least an SRS module and a clockspring, plus a number of other parts need inspection and possible replacement.

$4500 sounds pretty dear, as there would be at tops $2000 in new parts.
I have had a VY airbag system replaced. Ebay is a good way to save money for most of it which is what i did. But i would recommended getting a new Airbag module as they are very fragile. here what it cost me
Passengers Airbag Cover door assembly VY II(92084841-6) new-$229 ebay-$40
Drivers Airbag VY II(92117620) new-$485 ebay-$120
Airbag Clockspring(92147955) new-140
Passengers Airbag VY II(92095273) new-$565 ebay-$151
Seat Pretensioners ebay-$40
Airbag Module VY II UTE SS(92092017) new-$160
It ended up being $750 all up. As there are more part floating around for vt's you might be able to do it a bit cheaper, i installed it all and my mechanic check it all and cleared the srs light with his scan tool.
How much damage was to the front end? got any pics
If you do it, remember to keep every receipt and get all of the sellers detail + the vin of the car it came off for the RTA

Thanks for the comments airhead.... it may be worthwhile salvaging it and looking at re reg. i am picking it up this w/e so i will have pics then. it is a friends car so i am only going off what he has said but the damage includes front bar, front left guard, bonnet plus the airbags going off. he had a couple of quotes to fully fix and came in at about $10 000. he siad drivers door was hard to open and it got hit on the opposite side, so there is no doubt chassis damage.
either way i will look into everything, as insurance has paid him out and said he can keep the car i have picked it up for a crazy cheap price :-) so if worse comes to worse i will just wreck it.
By the way, how much do you guys think a ls1 with 6sp t56 full conversion is worth????
cheers

I know a wrecker that sells them for under $100 each in Adelaide, but, I doubt that if the car has been written off the government inspectors where you are would let you fit second hand. I think you should talk to the government inspection place in your state and see what you are allowed to do, how much they will charge to inspect and approve your own repairs.
A mate of mine in Adelaide recently repaired an ex victorian Police XR8 with second hand parts and the inspectors knocked him back and he had to replace most of his second hand parts with new ones and show them the reciepts. All too hard. Be careful mate and make sure you do your homework. :)

I used a fair few secondhand parts, the nsw rta had no issues with them aslong as you have the sellers full details (address/driver lic) and the vin from the car it was removed from. I used secondhand guards, front bar, headlights airbags etc.. it saves you alot of money.
Check with you local inspection station they can advise you whats what in you state.
