Guys
Currently experiencing a whining noise coming from I think the engine.
The noise is not constant and is mainly apparent when accelerating.
I first thought it was a mechanical whine but its so high pitched and the
way it cuts in and out it could possibly be electrical.
When traveling 80klm when in 4th(auto) then slightly accelerate the whine
comes as the revs go up and then goes with the revs still increasing.
Almost sounds like a siren at a distance as it the whine slowly become audible and then fades out. The whine noise still increases its pitch even while in 3rd changing to forth, so is not solely rev dependant.
It sound like it coming from the dash tweeters but covered them
with no difference. Having the eliminate control and stereo off makes
no difference. Running on petrol or gas makes no deference
Have changed sparks (with new NGK) with no difference, my other guess it maybe Ignition leads (only 2 months old).
Any Help appreciated

my son had a very similar noise , he put a amp and another what looks like an amp in the boot (i'm not audio savy) it is all connected to the stock 6 stacker in his vy . just thought i'd mention it even though it's probably not it but you never know.

Just to add - drive belt pulleys - the bearings wear out.

Thanks guys I will investigate and report back.
Further to the above the whine is only apparent while the car is under load/medium acceleration, fades in and fades out, and last for about 10 seconds at any one time. When cruising at a fixed speed no whine apparent, then accelerate again it fades in again and while still accelerating it will fade out again while the revs are still increasing.
When I first heard with my radio on, I thought it was a police siren at some distance away.

Think it you be a good idea to check the belts. Have you used and spray oil under the bonnet lately?
On occasion, I do used compressed air while the engine is running to blow and dirt out of the pulled grooves. I'd give this a try also.
Also check the power steering pump fluid level!

I have a similar whining, and it's definitely the gearbox T56. The RUBBER boot is torn and allowing the gear whine through, only under acceleration as you mention.
Pull up your facia and check the boot. It may just be that. Worth a look.

I have a Vy V6 Series II Berlina, I believe it has the 4L60-E 4 Speed Auto
would the above apply ?
How free are the idler pulleys meant to be?
Removed the belt and the single idler(with grooves) spins freely, however the other two with no grooves, while not totally stiff, don’t continue spinning when made to.
The frequency of the whine appears to be to high pitch to be mechanical, but will continue to fault find.

I had an incident a few years back where the cataytic converters insides collapsed and blocked the exhaust flow. This caused the gasket between the headers and cat to blow and the noise it caused was a high pitched squeal, only under accelration. I was hunting around for ages trying to find where the squeal was coming from. This also caused a great reduction in power though. Might be worth while checking.

i had a similar sounding problem to yours on my 04 grange, but mine also made the noise on first start up in the morning and then went away once it ran for a couple of minutes and then when up to temp made the noise as you describe, it was the belt tensioner and pully assmbly bearing squealing, $90 from holden and now quite as can be, could be something like that on your v6

Do you have an amp installed? i get the same noise as you are describing and im pretty sure its to do with the amp, if you have one try disconnecting the RCA's or the power to the amp and see if the noise goes away. I believe mine is interference from the power cable to the x-over box for the splits.

No amp installed, everything standard as per (factory VY SII Berlina V6).......sprayed lube in the idlers with no change, but I can definitely say it is load related.
For example driving steady at the same speed, and when on an incline, the hi pitch fades in and fades out, this also happens under medium acceleration.
Cruising at the same speed, no whine.
It sound to high pitched to be mechanical but I could be wrong.
Could it be torque converter related? (Have been told they don’t make a high pitch radio type whine, they usually just go/fail)

Changed the drive belt with no change, in whine.
Before changing I check all idlers , pulley's.
Although the groove less idlers where a little resistant, they appear ok,
however when spinning the water pump although it was fairly free, it
did make a grinding/bearing type noise. I'm not convinced this is the cause
of the high pitch whine heard within the cabin, but it sound like its still up for replacement.
