Hey all

i have a few questions regarding tyres

i recently bought a set of 4 VE SS alloys with near new existing Rubber on them "Bridgestones 245/45/r18's"

I am wanting to put on 235/40/r18's on the rims, so i dont have any problems fitting them too my VX after wheels are machined.

At bob Jane t-marts i have been quoted $1131 for a set of 4 Maxxis Tryes 235/40/r18, machining the VE wheel to suit PRE VE + wheel nuts, bolts + 4 wheel alignment + Lock nuts + balance it also includes gst

For Firestones in same size + all of the above i was quoted - $1455

For Yokohama's + all of above i was quoted $1600

my questions are

are maxxis tyres any good?

Is there anywhere cheaper then $80 a wheel to machine the VE wheels to Suit Pre VE but without dropping quality?

Also with the VE original rubber. how much should i expect to sell them for (set of 4 Bridgestone potenza's 245/45/r18's?) And would eBay be best for max profit on these tyres?

Suggestions and advice needed.

Thanks

Grant

I have a set of Marangoni tyres which are new from Italy and they are better than my Falkens I had previously. They also won Wheels Magazine tyre of the year in 2007 and where rated better than the Bridgestone Potenzas.
Got them from the tyre factory for $1250 fitted for 18's.

a friend of mine fitted maxxis tyres to his ba falcon, but was very disappointed with the mileage he got out of them, and he doesnt drive hard at all, he has switched back to a dunlop i believe this time around

Are you sure 245's wont fit on the VX.

I thought the SS came out with 235's on a 17 inch rim, so surely an extra half a centimetre each side will fit. I stand to be corrected though.

Seems like an expensive exercise if not.

i wish they did. But bob jane t-marts, etc say they wont. But with 3mm spacer up front and rolled guards at back they will fit, but this leave insurance and safety issues.

Expensive exercise indeed, costing me alot more then i originally thought.

Anyone interested in the tyres?

also would it be worth selling my old 16" knocked up VX acclaim alloys? with almost no rubber left

STAND!

The width isn't the issue, it is about the aspect ratio (ie 45 on his current - going to 40). They just won't fit.

I personally hate Maxxis, but that is personal, what I can say is that I have seen them fail in the sidewall on numerous occassions. For the money you are spending you could be on a kumho Ku11 for under $200 each or the KU31 for a little over. Toyo comes in at around $200 for a TASW and I think $250 for TPG (these are an excellent tyre). I have a set of Yoko's 306 you can have for a grand.

Shit sorry, I am not selling here I promise. Just letting you know how competitive this market can be. I know Bob Jane advertises alot, but check the whole market.

235 x 40 means that the aspect ratio (sidewall height basically) is 40% of the 235mm width.
245 x 45 has an aspect ratio that's 45% of 245mm.
Hence, you have a wider tyre and a taller profile, making the circumference of the tyre a noticeable amount larger. This puts the tyre into the spring seat area.
The speedo would also be quite a bit out.

exactly, that is another concern.

i wouldn't mind buying the yoko's however not unless i can fine a way to get wheel machined for cheaper then $80 a wheel, but having it done right at the same time. i rang around alot today and nothing....

I use the Maxis MAZi's on my ute.

Not quite as good as the GoodYear F1 Eagles, but still a very good tyre. And the price is good.
I find the Maxis grip well in the dry and wet, plus they wear very well...

I may be interested, what percentage of tread is left, or how many Kms have they done. What type of dollars you looking for as well?

Cheers

$80 a wheel???

Isnt that a little high?

Just to machine a VE wheel to fit VX?

I thought it was around the $15-40 mark? Thats what I had read.... Then again what you read and what actually happens is 2 different things

I am sure I saw plenty of sets for sale machined and with tyres to suit pre VE's. Sell what you have mate and buy a set of them.

cheers

Those tyres you are bidding on are a decent tyre, they are known to be a little noisy (like you have a wheel bearing on the way out) and also watch them carefully around the sidewall area where the tread starts. It is not uncommon to find them cracking in this are.
If you do find it and the tyre is still servicable Dunlop will give you a pro-rata claim on the tyre.
On some Maxxis tyres you can see made by Cheng Sheng. Now I often hear people talking about how good there Cheng Sheng's are, NOT. Where are all the GT Radial fans Allan Moffat loves em, shouldn't we all. Did I mention my distaste for maxxis?

I am now going to re-sell the VE wheels witht he rubber (not seperating) unless offered good money.

i will then uy a set of the same alloys alreayd machined $599 and put the rubber on them ( works out cheaper), then i dont have the hassle and costs of getting them machined.

so they are for sale if anyone is intrested.

Cost difference between 19 inch tyres and 18 inch tyres is bugger all. I got Kumho Escta KU31s 245/35/ZR19s for $250 each fitted & balanced. I thought that @ $250 a tyre, that they would be a crap tyre, but boy what I wrong. They are extremely good both in the wet & the dry => & for $250 each, how can you go wrong

Just replaced the Maxxis Victra MA-Z1s (235/40 R18) this week after 40,000km with another set. Much longer wearing than the S03s I had before, and a great tyre! Excellent in the wet and no tram-tracking problems like I had with the Bridgestones.
