Hi Guys,
Having a discussion with a friend over the weekend when he mentioned that both Falcons and Commodores have speed limiters. As I understand it the Fords have limiters due to driveline problems. Is it the same for the HSV and SS variants?
Cheers,

They are all speed limited due to the very high speeds the cars would do without them.

250 kph + would be quite easily achievable in either brand.

only really the utes have a speed limiter low enough to worry about, 210km/hr. the sedans are 412 km/hr.

VE utes and sedans limited to 253kph. Have not hit that yet in my ute but far enough over 210kph

All VEs and E series HSV are limited to 250km/h.
All FPVs are limited to 250km/h.

This is part of the "world standards" thet we are being moved into. All of the BMWs, Mercs or whatever are also limited.

The drive line problem that Ford had was in the early AUs where the tail shaft had a harmonic point a bit over 190km/h that cause 2 to let go in NT. All AUs were limited to 180km/h except those that had "high speed" tail shafts e.g. TE50, TS50 and some XR8s.

Most of the "lower end" commys and falcs are limited far below 250km/h. This is mostly to keep the price down.

If the cars were capable of 280km/h then they would, by law, have to have tyres, brakes and whatever that is certified to that level and would have to be aerodynamically stable up there.
How many fleet buyers would purchase cars thet MUST have $400 a corner tyres and premium brakes?

This would cost lots more and therefore reduce sales.

I have been 254km/h in a BA GT-P on the Barkly Highway and the record at the time was 307km/h (radar certified) and it really is TOO fast for 99.999999% of drivers. From 250km/h it takes about 300m to stop if you are prepared and almost 400m if you are not.

This means of you come over a rise and there are lots of moo cattles on the road 300m ahead YOU WILL HIT THEM.

I have it on good authority that the VE SS-V M6 ute does 243km/h (I'm sure it was under controlled circumstances).

Search it. Its been covered soooo many times. There are posts, screenshots of actual set limiters in the tune etc, etc. And reasons for the limiters on utes etc..

I recently saw 240 on my ute at about 6700rpm in 4th(M6).Not a very long road and I can say the standard brakes don't like working at that speed.

When Skaify reached the world record in the maloo in SA last year, was that the maximum speed he could get, or was that just withinh a 2km distance?

ALso, could you not do a max run on a dyno, or are they max limited too?

I think you could find out the speed limit on a dyno...I don't think the dyno has a speed limit...or maybe I'm wrong??

Sorry to drag up this old chestnut....but....can any Holden / HSV techs out there confirm VE's are limited to 250, and if so, what sort of alarms bells go off on your computers when they are plugged in for a service?

Good point! a mate used to work as an auto elec at a Kenworth dealership and he told me of warranty claims rejected due to excessive speed that they found when they plugged in their gear.

So i guess Holden/HSV could do the same

No alarms or faults. They get to 250km/hr and hit limiter, shut down for a second and then do it all again. Very weird feeling loosing all power at that speed :1peek:

Well it's not the limiter then. So say you were doing around 235 or better, at a track day of course, and the engine went into "Low Power Mode" or something like that may flash on the dashboard. What would cause that? Car has to be parked, and turned off/on a few times before it would run again?

Yeah, it was. VE GTS. Turns out I think I found the answer with a search on Limp Mode in here. Too much acceleration it seems......or possibly anyway.

falcons will set a code if speed limiter is reached!

Is the speed limiter turned off when your car is tuned? Or is it something you have to ask the tuner to do?

Depends on the tuner. I personally always max it out beyond what the car could ever get to ( you cant disable it per say ) but it's not a given that everyone will do it.

i can vouch for 256 (GPS) in a bogstock VE ute

Guys, as already mentioned, the actual speed limiter is nothing more than a number entered into a specific point in the tune. For example, a 2009 SSV auto would have 241KMH set as the actual "speed limiter" BUT is also has 235KMH set as the reduced power mode. So you will get to 235KMH quickly, but then the ECM will reduce power till you hit 241, at which point you loose all power.

Compare that with a 2009 HSV and the limiter speed is 250KMH, so you see it is worth getting an HSV as you get 9KMH more in the top end :p

When we had the Avalanche out on the highway it seem to just sit on 200. I knew it had a speedlimiter on them. It is preset for all the AWD including the coupe4. Did not cut out or shake or anything.
I found 180 was a good speed for them on long trips. Average fuel was 17 l/100 so pretty good for a fully loaded car.
Glad the VX GTS did not have one. Lots of fun at 270 odd

anything over basically 250 in a standard suspension/brakes set up on a ve is not real comfortable. 297 is like driving on ice skates and scared the shit out of me with plenty more left in it. on a track ofcoarse

I have had my 2007 ve ssv ute to 254 km/ph by the speedo which is actually 249 by my gps on a recent road trip. Definitely speed limited, at first I thought I broke it
