View Full Version : Downsides of OTRCAI?

Are there any downsides to fitting an OTRCAI?

I'm considering it on the one hand, but on the other hand I'm also wondering why the Commodore doesn't just come with them standard if they're so good - surely they can't cost more to make than the current, complicated intake arrangement, so why aren't they fitted to everything?

There havent been any downsides to my OTR, maybe a bit more cleaning of the filter, other than that all good :D

There are a number of downsides to them being both legal and for warranty and servicing reasons for a manufacturer.
Filters get filthy the minute they see dirty roads, meaning the car cannot reach specified service intervals.
Water intake into the motor .
Difficulty in meeting ADR's due to induction noise.

So does that mean driving on a dirt road with an OTRCAI would be a Bad Idea? Not that I drive on dirt roads, but sometimes it can't be helped for a short distance.

just clean your filter every 4-6 weeks mate, and you won't look back........:eyes:

Definitely the cleaning, mine got so dirty in 3 months of a Darwin
dry season that the car would not run. I clean mine roughly
every 2 months now, and that is on a low k's car (approx 1000k's
travelled in that period).

I clean mine every 5000km with just city driving, a bit sooner would be better :)

why would you bother going anything else other the OTR, they are the best in my opinion.

Just the fact the filter gets pretty dirty pretty quick. Induction noise is negligible in my opinion. Or maybe I'm just deaf! Or maybe I can't hear it over the exhaust!

You too? My OTR is not as loud as the pod filter but with 15 extra rwkw I don't care!! I am however down 1.5km of dirt road now so will have to keep a closer eye on it.

On a VE the design and placement of the IAT next to a hot coolant pipe is crazy. Charlies' OTR is a far better design than stock in everyway and not noisy at all. No issues with rain or with extra dirt. Plus its easy to clean with a lifetime filter.

You average Commodore isn't a performance car..

Check out the 427 (http://www.zcars.com.au/images/hsv-w427-engine1.jpg).. That comes with one stock..

yeah its the same like "Why doesnt holden bring them out tuned to maximum performance", most commen reason would be emissions, and warranty for driveline.

Downsides to OTR's....The price is the most but there wel worth it. Marco, me and a mate jsut fitted one of DUS's otr on his ve utem and its a top bit of gear and cheaper than the rest. highly reccomended

Also so they have a bit of room to make the next model a bit more powerful.

They do get dirty much more quickly than a normal filter arrangement. That's the main disadvantage really.

The only problem i have besides as everyone has stated , the cleaning, is that my otrcai hits my bonet and leaves white paint on my intake..

Thanks guys. My guess would be, having read this, that the main reason they don't do it is that your average customer wouldn't be up for cleaning their filter every few thousand km. Hell, your average customer doesn't even know how to check the oil or inflate the tyres anymore...

Marco,

I have a ORSSOM OTR CAI that I bought and fitted about 3 months ago on my VE SS.

You're welcome to come round and take a look at it fitted etc...

PM me if you want to set something up (I live down in Oxley).

Cheers

I'd just buy a cheap ebay PowerTorque copy but make sure you toss out the filter and put in a K&N jobbie. I don't think PT have much stock of their original OTRs anymore but you could ask Shaun if they do. There are quite a few options out there for VT-VZ now.

The quality is sometimes a bit suspect but they are an item that tends to get a fairly hard life with the underbonnet heat and vibrations. The Orssom one looks great and what about Nick's (ziggycv8z) metal ones made right here is Brisbane?

Also I think you will find the Holden would find it harder to pass noise regs with an OTRCAI. I am curious to see how HSV get around this with the 427.

The new HSV 427 has one and that has been well researched. GMH are not keen to fit one like the Russo one as it prohibits air getting to the top part of the radiator and in some climates (Saudi Arabia) the engine needs all the cooling it can get. Testing showed that if you go through a deep "puddle" of water, the water can enter the lower air scoop with the main body of air and this water borne air travels vertically up the radiator and gets turned into the top part of the radiator by air entering the smaller opening of the top grille. If the OTR takes air from this spot, also trapping the water borne air travelling vertically, then water can enter the intake. If the OTR takes air entirely from the front top grille or from the grille/bonnet junction, then water entry is unlikely to be significant. GMH has used various intake designs in the past, the VS for example took air from just under the bonnet line as per the Orssom,CSV and similar OTRs. These designs should be okay.

As PlanetDavo pointed out, GMH has to obey strict noise rules, and for driver expectation too, and elected to keep things quiet. Pity they didn't think more about the IAT location as it gives a false reading of intake air temp. It is also a pity that the aftermarket intakes are so expensive, but that happens with small volumes I suppose.

re-oil lightly entire surface of filter using the spray can oil.

You're not supposed to use high pressure water to clean it or high pressure air to dry them from what they say on the packet. I just tap the heavier dirt out, spray the cleaner on, run it under tap pressure (huge amounts of crap comes out) then allow to dry overnight or over a day then re-oil.

G'Day,

I tried one on for the Nats and back to back tests gained no decrease in times even with the filter out.:bawl:

The sealed Pod setup I have sounds just as good to me, and stays cleaner longer.

For $500 ish I reckon there are far better ways to spend your hard earned$$.

I would also like some feedback on the way that Wonky gained 15 kw's from just an intake change.

Cheers,

That's interesting as testing up here in QLD, particularly by Markone2 and the rest of the boys, has shown repeatable decreases in 400m times using an OTR. It is worth at least 1/10th.

Have only cleaned mine for the first time the other day using a K&N cleaning kit.

Didnt seem to dirty for about 4 or so months use.

Cleaning every 5000km or every 4 months is what I think I will do. Usually drop the oil at 5000km intervals so what is an extra 10 or so minutes to give the filter a clean.

Hi Hogs,

Admittedly the dyno readings weren't done on the same day but before the OTR went on I had had a number of runs at Chev's with the previous setup (full KPM system, MAF tune, pod filter) and the best it had done was a fraction over 247rwkw. Pulled the pod filter off and put the OTR on and with the tune untouched it went to 255. Chev tweaked the tune some more and we ended up at 262.4rwkw. No smoke, no mirrors and a number of people were there and saw it happen. It has since had a minor Chev tweak again and (on a different day) is now up to 263.9 (from memory).

Gary

Meant to add that we tried it with bonnet up, bonnet down and no top on the OTR. All runs were within 1kw i.e. nothing made any difference.

Gees you can tell the newbs alright.

Matey just throw it in the wash with the next load of nappies. Napisan works wonders. Then just use some of that left over replacement oil to smear the filter front.

Jobs right.

Nick's OTR is excellent quality. Very nice unit, one of the best looking OTRs i've seen. They made it and an OTR for the Chrysler 300C at Lucas Welding so you can imagine how good the work would be.

PT OTRs are gone now. I tried to get one from PT nearly two years ago and they didn't have any.

mainly for mafless tune but the orrsom generation 4 u can have it installed with maf still in place
it has better throttle response with shorter distance for air to travel

My pod CAIs (2 of I tried) were much louder on induction sound than my OTR but I don't give a stuff about that given the 15 rwkw I gained going from pod to OTR!
