A mate has a 4.8 litre petrol Patrol and is looking for some advice on tuning options for it. Mainly wants to get better fuel economy. Currently is getting about 22 litre per 100km's.
The truck is in Melbourne. Any advice appreciated.

Andrew

Put it on gas! Thats the only way he will get cheaper running costs with similar performance

Mate, even if you can get it tuned to only use 17 litres per 100km's, you would be better off by as posted before by putting it on LPG.
I have a SS commodore on 98 octane petrol, but my 2002 Fairlane daily runabout is on LPG, which costs me about $43.00 to do about 400 km's around town. (I do at least 1200 km's a week for work so this saves me big time!)
You might even get the government $2000 rebate.
Gas is much cheaper to run than diesel and not as smelly!!! :)

mate search up for dtronics safari piggy back systems, we put one in our gu 3l and made the slightest power difference from 3k upwards, and fuel was a tad better but you havent listed if its diesel or petrol, turbo, v8, but from living on here and doing all the mods to my cars i know no how to improve anything on fuel economy from standard.
look into freeing up the air intake and see if there is a replacement filter from k&n or unifilter< would be a better option

Those Big petrol Nissan sixes are definantly not renouned for fuel economy. Thats why most patrols are 3.0 ltr or 4.2 ltr Diesels.
They have plenty of power, but really guzzle the juice. Worse than the town drunk.
As said above, not much you can do apart from putting it on gas. Or getting a bigger wallet!

I've seen a few of these lately as well as cruisers getting 6 litre L76 or LS2's put into them - the things absolutely hammer - dunno about fuel econemy - but don't thing the owners gave a toss - couldnt be worse than you are getting though.

This will help with the fuel issue and also get in touch with your local 4WD club and i'm sure any info on tuning the GU petrol patrol will be found with these clubs. Grab any 4WD magazine and there will also be tuning advice on the back pages.

my 4.5 landcruiser is on gas and it get 22l/100 on petrol or gas around town and you can't tell the difference in power, these new gas systems are much better than the early ones plus the gov pays 2k towards it

Thanks for the input. I have suggested lpg also but he won't do it. Only has 18 months of the lease left and will either:
- unload it for a diesel
- keep it as a bush basher and get an econo box for day to day driving.
The only reason he went for the 4.8 petrol was that he wanted a Ti, and at that stage (late 2005) the 3.0 diesel wasn't an option, which it is now.

tell him to do some research before buying a 3l turbo diesel patrol

^ Well I think thats all you can get now in Diesel - the 3.0 litre, or the juice guzzling petrol 4.8
The good 'ol 6 cylinder 4.2 litre diesel was put to bed at the end of 2007 I think?
The 3.0 ltr 4 cyl diesel is not without its problems. Some horror stories about those things.

Other than the fuel consumption it is a good truck, apart from the GPS screen.... it is up to the fifth replacement. It is either a VDO or Siemens part.
I would dare say the next truck for him will be a 200 series Cruiser with the twin turbo diesel. Maybe Nissan will release un updated Patrol, with a better diesel option in the near future.

I dont think that will be happening anytime soon. The 3 ltr, piston burning, engine siezing rattler will be there for a while yet.
Besides, Its getting on a bit as well. The current series has been in production since 1997.
The 200 series 'cruiser is a much better unit.

I know exactly where you are coming from!
Especially the early ones.
I have seen them blown up with only 30,000kms on them.
What a cr4p time bomb engine they were! :spew::spew::spew:

My mum has an 06 GU IV ST-L Patrol with a 4.2 Turbo diesel in it and it goes! I think the boost has been wound up a bit (runs 11psi) and it has a big snorkel that literally sucks, if a chick with long hair stands near it will try and suck there hair in hehehe. I think currently it gets about the 20L per 100kms mark (131L tank so about 650kms including sub tank), thanks to my mums tame driving but my gts does 26.9 though, holden thinks it is fine but i beg to differ considering Redbook reakons that i should be getting in the 14.5L per 100km mark. Anyway my mum is looking at running it on vegie oil which will work out with all the costs of processing the fuel etc to be about 40c a litre!! Almost a dollar cheaper than bio-diesel, i think she is planing on doing the conversion soon so if i can find this thread again ill let you know how it goes :)

I have recently put a ls2 into a gq shorty . Am getting around 20-22 per 100 .Still mucking around with tuning and air intake(snorkels are fairly restrictive) .But consumption still on par with old Nissan engine pushing 35's around
