View Full Version : Confused - what engine is in my VESS 6l
might sound a bit silly, but i thought it was called a "LS2" ... or is it a L98?
Just reading the differences on : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine
The latest HSV's have LS3's in them yah? ... why on earth are we still getting these older lowtech engines when they're up to LS8 / LS9 etc in the states? (or is it a matter of economics?)

I too thought it was in the LS2 family. Apprently not. The E series HSV's have an LS2 and LS3 now. The 6.0ltr engine in the holden range is an L98.
This is only what I have been told by my holden dealer.

The SS and Holden have the L98 6 litre. The hsv had the LS2 6 litre (different Heads, cam etc.).The current HSV now have the LS3 which is 6.2 litres. .....Hope that clears it up for you.

yep and from my undetrstanding the L98 was a better engine then the LS2
as far as the op ls9 is basically a 6.2 s/c engine so another kettle of fish. the lsx series is just what different engines are out there the generation number is the one that matters

LSx Engines:
LS1
LS2 (HSV 6L, GM 6L nearly identical to the L98)
L98 (Commodore 6L, Basically made so it wasn't as powerful as the HSV's beast)
L76 (a 6.0L with L92 spec heads that work with the bore)
LS3 (6.2L uses l92 heads. In new Commodores)
LS7 (7 Litre, Dry sump)
LS9 (LS3 Supercharged)
I can ellaborate further if anyone wants? Working daily with the US LSx Market, I know this stuff like the back of my hand.

In what way? The heads on the L98 flow better than the heads on the LS2. But the LS2 still makes more power.

I wouldn't say better either as the cam in the LS2 is a better bump stick. What I would say is that the L98 is the cheaper engine to do mods on as its alot cheaper to change a cam than it is to change heads.

i was told that the bottom end of a L98 is pretty much the same as a LS2 but thats where it ends..
The L98 is a Great Forced induction engine.

From what I was to understand more potential for modifications

from the factory yes, but 10kw anit hard to find on a stock engine

Tuning is key with any of these engines. L98 is a nice motor, great all round performer, I cant comment on the LS2 as I aint driven one.

from reading these very forums........
VE Holden 6 litres - L98
VE HSV 6 litres - LS2
an LS2 cam in an L98 will perform quite well... better than the LS2
i believe sonny may have done one recently???????
my understanding (happy to be corrected) is that the L98 and LS2 are the same block/crank/rods/pistons... which give the same 6.0L capacity...
the LS2 heads are inferior to the L98 heads...
the LS2 manifold is inferior to the L98 item...
the L98 camshaft is so teeny tiny as to not out power the LS2...
another one -
putting the same cam/exhaust/intake in an LS2 vs an L98 will see the L98 come out on top due to its better top end set-up...

here in the US , the LS2 requires 91 or higher octane fuel , and the G8's with the L98 require the use of 87 octane fuel
ive seen dyno #'s of the L98's in the 360-380 range after being tuned , and in the 320-330 range with the stock tune

Im sure it was the L76 that is used in the Holden VE Commodores.
Or have they used L98 right from the start?

close but nope, the L76 was used in the last of the VZs
the L98 is pretty much a modified L76 but with the DOD crap removed(the 76 had it in there just not activated, its interesting to read that the G8 has the L76 not the L98

VE is getting L76 before Christmas in Australia.

So that will be a 6.0L Dod motor with AFM ?
The debate regarding which motor is better is a bit boring actually, sure the L98 has great heads and theyt just happen to be the same as the L76 and Ls3 heads baring the intake valve length being a tad longer on the ls3.
I think the relevent fact is that bang for buck and with a few bucks spent the L98 in the SS represenst great value for money and could possibly outperform the LS2 with similar mods.
Thats my take on it anyway.
cheers

Correct SS Enforcer.
I agree with you regarding the debate about which one is "better".
Most people who buy these cars really just don't care! They buy the one they can afford, or can justify the most, and usually end up quite happy either way!
