I got bored today (whilst at my parents' orchard) and decided to rip the engine out of my KE55 corolla, now defunct, just to have a poke around. Process:

1. Undo any large bolts you see on top.
2. Get a rope on opposite B pillar and use tow car to flip it on its side.
3. Undo tailshaft, exhaust, rear main, engine mounts, crossmember.
4. Kick the shit out of it until relevant parts roll out. Do not let engine roll onto foot.
5. Keep undoing bolts on the engine until none remain.

This is what I ended up with. My question: for a 310,000km engine, are these in good nick? I seem to think they could be worse off given the absolute raping we gave this engine (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=98477&highlight=yota+rolla) (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=98477&highlight=yota+rolla):

The plan is to strip it to its absolute basis components. Engine - done :headbang:

In all seriousness, I am keeping a few choice bits (motor bits, gearbox, clutch) and sending the rest of the poor thing to a scrap yard where it can spend its remaining days rusting away to nothing

God help the next corolla I lay my hands on... I am looking for a KE70 to transplant an engine built from 2K, 4K, 5K and datto 1200 parts... should be... raucous

The ol 4K is a tough motor.

I had one in my KE36 Wagon and it took some serious punishment without complaining....brings a smile to my face just thinking about it..

Sure is! I had a tacho im my old Rolla that went up to 7000 RPM. Used to run it off the clock regularly!

wound it off 7k RPM!

Well, I held this thing flat for about four minutes straight, I'd like to think, if it had a tachometer, that it would be reading around the zillion mark. For the crunching noises it was making I was shocked to see all the rods, springs, valves etc in one piece, even the rings are flawless. It was run for about 2 hours without coolant and no damage or cracking on the head or block, everything's remained well oiled, just an unbeleivable engine. And look at the lump stick! there's not even marks on it!
