After an eternity of time trying to decide what to do to my ride, I finally made a decision and used the Nike motto " Just Do it"
After reading through countless threads and information here I used the information and purchased these goodies from Speedinc.
Patriot 243 cnc ported heads complete with patriot dual .650 rated valve springs
Head Gakets
ARP head bolts
LS2 timing chain
7.40 hardened pushrods
220/220/112 .581 .581 Comp cam
A big thank you goes out to Fraser for all his help and patience. Can highly recommend SpeedInc for any purchases. Great customer service and advice.
Next step delivered car to Chevs ( Thanks Mustanger for you outstanding taxi service ).
The car was dropped in on Monday afternoon just prior to the new shop opening. Gary and the Chev team went out of the way to get it all completed for me.
Anyway all the gear bolted up nicely and the tune was completed. The car made 286.4rwkw and ran out of injector. There is some more in hopefully with new injectors on the way.
Gary was fantastic and finished off the initial tune on Saturday evening after the big opening day so I could get the car back in time for my recent trip. A great effort on his behalf considering the big day that had proceeded, not to mention all the worries and work with getting the new workshop ready to go.
After putting on 3500 klms in the past two weeks the car has gone great and is a pleasure to drive. There is a few minor touch ups to the tune to be done. The new found power is great and I cannot believe I waited so long to get my finger out and do something. The fuel economy is a bit on the worse side atm but I think thats due to me using the go pedal a bit more often. There is a bit more valvetrain noise and I was a bit concerned about it at first but after reading through a few more threads and listening to a few other cammed cars I think its just the nature of having a bump stick in the car. I have been using 10w-40w royal purple atm and I will change to the catrol 10-60w to see if that helps things. The 220 cam is a ripper and the car is completely transformed. It cruises nice and the torque spread is fantastic.
I now have some 36lbs injectors and a catch to install. The car will be going back to Chevs for these to be fitted and the tune finalised, and a fresh batch of slippery stuff put in. Hopefully I may see 300rwk.....
Once again a big thank you to Chevs and Fraser for all there help and advice and great customer service. I am looking forward to getting the car finished and doing more of the driving stuff.

Nice result JB. I'm watching this with keen interest as your combo is very similar to what I have and will be going for. I've always said that 300rwkw can be attained out of a 220 cam. And I've got no doubts that Garry will be able to get it for you. Great work, lets show the bigger cams what the 220 can do.

Good result I think you will get the 300rwkw although in this day and age of dyno numbers it will upset the experts but as long as your happy thats all that matters, big is best until you get a big number with a small cam lol :), the 10-60 oil will do the trick in shutting up the valvetrain noise .

Sounds like a ripper of a result there JB. I reckon some 7.425" pushrods may see your valvetrain noise reduced a tad.
It'll be good to see your final result - the 220/220 is a great cam!

I definately think this cam is the way to go. I am not particulary worried if I don't see 300rwkw. Just amazing the difference it made to the car.
My plan for the valvetrain noise is to try the 10-60w oil first and if that doesn't do it. Then go the roller rockers and then pushods. I think the rockers will help with valve train harmony so to speak. Do you think they would help? I still need to fit UDP and cooler thermostat so with the injectors and these two I think the 300 is very attainable. Although dyno numbers are the be all to end all.
Thanks for the advice guys I appreciate it.
JB
Another .025" length on the pushrod might "quieten" up the valve train a little JB. Once we gain full control over the injector at high RPM, we should see more rwkW's.:)

Great to meet you Today JB, I love the sound of the SS..........
Have you broken the news to the Missus about the new mods mate? LOL.
As Gary has said, a cam + head car will make a bit more after 5800, especially with the new injectors and the rest of the bolt ons'.
Heres a quick price list of some of the things I ordered mate:
Comp push rods @ 7.425 US$ 119.99
YT Roller Rockers @ 1.7 US$ 399.99
Powerbond UDP/belts AU$ 330.00
UltraCool thermo AU$ 150.00

Macca I gather your running 7.425's in yours. Did you measure your valve clearance to make you go for these or just go off Fraser's recommendations. The reason I ask is that I'm contemplating this might improve my valvetrain noise too. I'm just worried that if I did it I might bleed off cylinder pressure due to to the valve not fully closing. But I'm sure the lifters soak up a bit of it and due to me running quite heavy dual springs I have plenty of pressure closing the valves. I'll have to get around to taking some measurements when she's warm I think.

Bottom line should read "dyno numbers are not the be all to end all" Although bragging rights are a good thing.

I am confident there may be couple more in her. I think the pushrods may be the solution.

No mate, I've got ETP215 heads, which have an 11-degree valve angle , compared to LS1 heads having 15-degrees (I think).
My pushrods are 8.10" - on Fraser's recommendation. I am running approx .060" preload on the lifters at the moment, which seems to sit within Cranes'/Comp's respective recommended ranges.
From a lot of reading about combos on the US boards, it seems to be the consensus that 7.425" is the way to go with a cam on LS1/6 heads. In saying that, however, it always pays to check the valvetrain geometry to get the proper set-up.
JB - let me know when you're going back to Chev's - I wouldn't mind coming down for a look-see!

Can you let us know how it goes. I think I will be putting in the larger pushrods to. Valvetrain noise can be frustrating and anything thats makes them run quieter is worth a bit of effort. Its amazing how one mod leads you into another.

I'll let everyone know either way mate but I won't be doing anything till I make my mind up on which way I go regarding heads. Then again these days I'm thinking more and more about going down the Turbo route as I'm really just pissing money away to make small gains (comparably to FI) in N/A form. Staying N/A still attracts me to a degree, but one can't argue with what FI can do.

Good choice Cosmo :)
The pushrod length varies cam to cam with the same heads and gaskets. Quiet valve train is all about correctly measuring preload.
Things have taken a while to catch on that the 220 220 112 since VYMaloo pioneered its use in getting 280rwkw with stock heads, TB, HSV exhaust 2 years ago.
In a M6 with good heads and manifold its got to be capable of over 310rwkw. My 216 220 with 555 lift and 114 made 290rwkw 2 years ago. That was in an A4. If it can do it then the 220 220 with 581 lift should do better.
More 220 news is that the Vortech SC 220 i did a few weeks ago just made 401rwkw from just 7-8psi. Pretty amazing stuff for a cam that is so calm.

The second round of mods have been completed. Chev and the Team fitted up the 36lbs injectors, oil catch can, 7.425 push rods and 1.7 yt roller rockers. Things didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked as the 1.7 rr didn't fit under the covers properly. We didn't notice it until we started it after putting everything back together and tap tap tap. Shut it down and a quick check of everything revealed the rockers hitting the covers. A quick dash to yella terra to pick up some spacer gaskets and we were back in business.
Gary checked her on the rollers and after some part throttle tuning the real wot tuning began.
After making a few changes and thing the end result was 290rwkw. A run with the otr filter out saw a gain of 5rwkw. Just something interesting to note there.
We thought there would be more in it than that. The car was at 100kpa with 12.5 afr and 26 degree's of timing and that was the best it could do. The dyno number isn't that important anyway. The injectors were under control and I can give it a good run without having to worry about the injectors not keeping up.
There car is great and with a change to the throttle cracker settings and a cold start adjustment should see me a rather happy camper.
The pushrods, rr and the 10-60w oil did seem to quieten the valvetrain somewhat, but it still is a bit on the loud side. Those that have quite valvetrains with high lift cams I would say are very fortunate ppl.
Thanks again to Gary and Rob for there extra effort and patience. They are great guys who go out of there way to make sure you are happy. The beer was a good end to a long day. Cheers guys.

Great result mate and funnily enough the AFR and Timing Garry has run in yours is pretty much smack bang on what I run in mine (great minds think alike). Its actually a very difficult cam to tune I found when I did mine on the dyno. I found that moving timing around even 1 degree resulted in a 5kw decrease so thats how close getting MBT is on these things (I run 26.5). I also run mine @ 12.6AFR but that's much for muchness really. I would be interested to see what adding 1 degree of timing would do with yours. It would be interesting in that I have a wider LSA than you (113LSA) but you have superior heads. Food for thought anyway. But none the less its great to see the 220 shove it right up the bigger cams. :goodjob:
O BTW did the 7.425 rods make a difference to the valvetrain noise?

They helped a bit. Overall the changes did make an improvement. I was hoping it would get alot quieter, but an improvement is good. Having a high lift cam with XER I guess I should have really expected some extra noise.
It would be intersting to how others are going with valvetrain noise with this cam.

Very nice result there JB - Chev has stepped up yet again with the gun tuning and of course, Big Rob did well on the spanners! 290rwkw out of Chev's new dyno is a great result on this lower-than-usual duration cam...well done!
I'm glad your valvetrain noise has reduced a tad, so you have moved forwards in that regard also.
The XE-R lobes are very aggressive off-the-seat and up to .050", so that is the reason for the noise. I'm just lucky with mine, is it quieter with the cam I have in it now, than it was with the very mild XE-lobes of the 222/224.
It was great to catch up the other day and I'll look forward to seeing the finished product in the future. Enjoy it.
Cheers,
Macca

We would all love more grunt. No point leaning on it and throwing silly amounts of timing in it for a few rwkw.
