Remove cap and pour two bottles of engine flush in engine. replace cap and Start then idle for 12-15min

Jack car on passanger side. Plug and filter are awkward to access on the VE so I removed the passenger side wheel which helped heaps. Remove plug, if you get no oil on your hand you are doing well here. Drop car level and allow to drain until no more drips. Remove filter and allow to drain further. I went and had lunch and came back an hour later. Replace filter and plug ensuring hand tight filter and spanner tight plug.

Fill with 8.3 litres of your favourite oil then replace cap.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh166/boylero/DSCF2172.jpg

Start engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes, then take for steady cruise unitl normal operating temp is reached. Return home and check for leaks. Give filter and plug a tweak.

Hello Boyley,
is there any advantage to using a ryco filter over the use of a genuine filter?
Cheers

I dont think so mate, its all they had at repco

i used 10-40 mate :)

i also had to sprint down to holden to get a genuine filter cos the mongos at autobarn dandenong said they dont carry them. but from the pic there of
the ryco and that part number they probably do.. will know for next time... the guy tried to sell me a "DRIFT" brand oil filter and said this will probably fit.. lol

Dunno bout that Nulon flush. The original Holden filters are generally cheaper to buy than the Ryco's.

Would be interesting to hear what Steve from Mainlube has to
say about this Nulon product.

It wasnt about the brand, I used the flush because I was changing to the 10w-60. It was all that was available at repco, same as the filter. Wanted to make sure I got as much out of her as possible of the factory oil.

Seems to of worked well as the new oil has no tarnishing at all.

Just guessing but the process would be the same for a HSV 6.0L yeah?

Cause my 22,500 intermediate is coming up... Think I'll do it myself.

Anyone used that new Mobil Oil? 1W40 I think it is... Maybe? $89 a bottle though :(

No worries mate, not rubbishing the product, I have used quite
a few Nulon products over the years and always thought them
to be quite good. Just remember the fallout from the Nulon
lifter cleaner that I thought was ok :)

Heya CSP,

I did use the Mobil 1 0w40 and it was desided that the oil was way too thin. I was told by the holden HSV mechanic that they have that oil and it is used on the holden barina if the engine is noisy.

If you want to get it go out to Hill&Co in Barrier street Fyshwick just up from Harvey Norman and they sell it for $64.75 per 5ltr container.

I am now back to using Mobil 1 10w30 and after a good engine flush it seems to be going ok. (touch wood)...

Cheers mate

Interesting...

Might just go with the Castrol Edge Sport 10w60.

Another tip too, if you buy genuine holden filters , before you take them open the box and make sure there ok , i took 6 back the other day that had a reasonable amount of rust on them internally.:)

Just spoke to a mate who's working at the only HSV Holden Dealer in the ACT (started as a 1st year apprentice this year).

Apparently, HSVs are meant to use a "special Mobil oil". He said he'd let me know specifically what it is tomorrow.

CSP,

Steve is the HSV mechanic at you know where... ( he has been working on my car)

Holden HSV dealers received a tech notice about a month ago (maybe) re the change of oil for the E series HSV range. This is only due to Mobil no longer producing the Mobil 1 10w30. All HSV dealers using Mobil1 products will use the Mobil 1 5w30. They are using both at the place your talking about.

That just adds to my confusion though... LOL

Yeah I can understand that..

With all the ones I have tired over the last couple of weeks I have gone back to the Mobil1 10w30, supplied by you know where on advice from Steve.

IMO if your not having any issue stick with whats working. Save time and money.. If you go with the mobil1 product do check out Hill & Co prices, they are alot cheaper than the Auto spares shops.

BTW. saw some pics of your car you posted with the exhaust fitted by the boys in Braddon. Look very nice. If you have a video of the sound I would like to hear..

Thanks for the advice... I guess I'll stick with what's working :D and I'll give Hill & Co a call.

I do have video of it. Just need to get the video transferred from handycam to my PC, edit and upload it.

If anyone has any idea how to block out a number plate in video files, please let me know.

Thanks for the write up, easy done. Even for someone like me, who isn't mechnically minded.

:goodjob:, you do standup as well :jester:. Using the oil flush, and knowing how many litres the motor takes were helpful.

Just something else to add to this.

When flushing it is better to buy some cheap oil e.g. Calibre 15w50 ($20/5.5L from Supercheap) and mix the flushing additive in with that then flushing the engine with the mix. Draining, fitting new filter and re-filling. I know it seems like a waste but it is much better.

Also using the lifter-free and treating it like a flush is better. I think the engine oil flush contains kerosene which breaks down the oil and can allow metal to metal contact. That is what I have gathered from reading Steve's posts.

Been looking at using the Liqui Moli Detox as my 5.7 has 120k on the clock and feel it needs a decent flush.

Might go the Castrol Edge 10-W-60.

It's taken a few years however, looks like you guys are now (mostly) moving in the right direction.

A few points to remember with the above info is.............

Always flush with new oil (or you have 10 times the shit flowing round through your bearings etc, causing erosion, and you will leave an unwanted amount of debris in your motor, we call it carryover. You dirty the new oil from the first turn. :eeew:

99% of flushes contain solvents (this is why lifter free works so well) not good products for your engine, can damage seals) don't leave them in too long.

If your lifters are cruising you will find 10w60 reduces wear and provides quieter running engines (some magical motors may need thinner oil to quieten them, never had this problem myself)

Mobil has never really caught on with the LS series engines, appears to make them a bit noisy (not my experiences, never applied it), their group 4 should be OK but there you go, this is what I hear.

Unfortunately mechanics are taught jack about oils so anything they quote usually comes from a book as this isn't their field.

Filters ..... much of a muchness unless you have something special.

Cheers

Steve
