Pick a budget, then sports, touring, enduro, after that everyone willknow exactly what to recommend.

sports in a 250 would be like a cbr 250, low bars so ur leaning forward.
Touring is alot more of an upright position road bike with bars higher up or even straight.
Enduro is a dirt bike regoed for road use.
CBR 250 would be good, right budget ad plenty of them around. Also most seem to hold their value, cousin sold his for the same price 1 year later.
They also look good and go pretty hard for the size of em.

Look my suggestion may seem a little "out of left field" BUT:
Most learner legal bikes are 250cc. Easy to ride and economical.. BUT are quickly outgrown.
If you have any experience on Motorcycles I would recommend something which you can enjoy beyond your "L" and "P" licence.
A friend of mine purchased a Hyosung (it is the Hyundai of the motorcycle world)... he is as happy as a pig in $hit.
I realise it is a little out of your budget (if purchased NEW)... but if you can stretch it.
This is potentially a cycle that you would be proud to own and can enjoy for 3 to 4 years... by which time you will want to strap an ACME rocket to your crutch.--> Wiley Coyote style.
This bike comes "restricted" so that it is learner legal... and of course can be "un-restricted" when your skills and license are ready !:)
And for a Hy___ I reckon it looks great.
Colours Available : Mango Yellow, Hot Chili Red, Titanium Silver, 8-Ball Black
Maybe see if there are any to be had second hand?
Might need to check that they are Learner legal in ACT also. Definately OK in NSW
Hope this helps.
Good Luck

Personally i don't like the hyosung's, but thats just my opinion. I sold my cbr rr a few months ago, and i couldn't have been happier with it. It was from sumoto in melbourne. they put the sharper fearings(spelling?) on it instead of the old round lights etc. they will also paint it in your design if you like (included in price) You also get a helmet, gloves and free delivery outside of vic. It was the best looking 250 i could find $8000 but worth it i think.

If you've never ridden a road bike before, get a Yamaha Virago 250cc or any <400cc trailbike.
If you have, then i'd go an RD/RZ 250, or Aprillia RS250..something with some sting.
Dont buy a sports bike if you havent ridden on the road before, you will only scare yourself which will impede the learning curve.
2-smoke or 4-stroke?
2 strokes are no good for touring/long distances at constant throttle speed's (ie:100km/h for an hour) and need rebuilding every 3-6 mths...Built for track work/round town.
4-strokes go all day, and only really need valve clearances checked periodicaly.

id get a road/trail bike if you arent a confident rider because you most probably will crash it at some stage and anything with fairings will cost a lot more to repair than a dirt squirter

ZZR250 is also a good bike. The only problem with it is the turning circle is not the best. But You can do it in the test. You just need to practice on it. :)

Don't know how your history will affect your insurance premiums. Best to ring some insurance companies and get some quotes.
Hyosung gt250r? Nah go the 650... That was my point, you can get it in Restricted Learner Legal setup... then upgrade it to full spec when you are ready for $tuff all.

This is a fair and wise comment. Gravel rash is a fact of life when you are learning. Either get some practice first or be prepared to drop your new pride and joy. :bawl:

What ever bike you get it's going to be transitional so its about spending as little as possible on a bike to get through to your full license.
4 Stokes; ZZR250, FZR250, Across (Suzuki), CBR (over priced imo) are all ok and will get you by. I dont personally like the Chinese bikes.
2 Strokes; RZ, KR1, RGV (if you can find them), Aprilia (if you can afford it) are all fun bikes but high maintenance.
I spent $1600 on a RZ250 as my first roady, required some maintenace being 2stroke, but went well for a 250 though and I'm not a small bloke either.
Things not to skimp on: Helmet (cheaper is not better, just think, what is your head worth), boots, gloves, pants and a good jacket.
Other than that welcome to the club, and a step down in the food chain...:eyes:

Get a road /trail and learn to ride off road first it hurts a lot less crashing in the bush than on the road the dirt skills you gain will help when you hit the road

Yes mate that 650 is "LAM" approved :)
Browse the list and have a look at what is available new & secondhand. You might find something else you like.
This info came from here:

List:
Approved motorcycles for novice riders
Revised 20/05/2008
As from 6 September 2002 a Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAM) scheme for novice riders (both learner and provisional) will commence on a trial basis. The LAM scheme will allow novice riders to ride moderately powered motorcycles with an engine capacity up to and including 660ml and which do not exceed a power to weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and are shown on this list. The following list, which will be adjusted as new models are approved by the RTA, displays details of all motorcycles that can be ridden by learner and provisional riders.

It is your responsibility to make sure that you are riding an approved motorcycle. If you are a learner or provisional rider you must not ride a motorcycle that is not shown on this list.

Yeah no worries Lance.
The gt650r looks good in the flesh too. It's no Ducati or Hayabusa ... but for the price and learner legal, I reckon it is awesome.
Insurance has always been a joke on m'cycles.
Generally if you only write-off an un-insured bike every 2 to 3 years you are still in front vs insuring the same bike over the same period of time:confused:
That is until your driving record and grey hair makes things cheaper:)
Test Ride Everything you can get your hands on.
You will soon learn what type of bike and what model is right for you.
Good Luck.

Just a tip, if you are looking for gear, try everything on. Helmet must be tight and without feeling presure anywhere. Gloves shouldn't be to tight or loose at finger tips. And dont be scared to buy oversees.... Got love the Aussie dollar at the moment.

what does upgrading to a full spec intail - just drop in a new engine + tune ? the hyosungs do look very nice in person, they sound a bit piss weak, but definatly look the part. also the old cbr250rr with the upgraded fairings make them look very modern

The information that I was given suggests that "un-restricting" is a matter of removing a limiting plate from either/ or both the inlet and the exhaust. 30 min job, no cost if DIY. Talk to dealer though for more info...

I think you should dodge road/trail bikes.. no good on road and mediocre offroad.
For the road the suspension/brakes and tyres are very average on road trail. Gumby riding position for going at a decent speed (mind you 250 wont be that quick).
I also use insure my ride for insurance nice and cheap.. haven't made a claim yet so don't know if its a matter of getting what you paid for.
Wouldn't spend too much on a 250 as you will outgrow it quickly and be upgrading as soon as you can Good part is that the 250's seem to have reasonable resale, but like buying a car , no point buying new if you are only going to keep it for 12 months.
Like others have said get yourself a good quality helmet , jacket etc.

Stepped my wife onto a GPX250 after a couple of months on a GS125 (had to step her up slowly). GPX250 & ZZR250 are mechanically very similar.
Great bikes, I've always liked the Kawasaki's i've owned.
BUT personally I think $7,500 is way too much for something that you will outgrow in 12 to 18 months.
That's the problem with the LAM laws. Your locked into buying a "lightweight" "low performance" cycle. Which inevitably becomes something that you cant enjoy long term.
Which is why I felt that if you have the cash get a larger bike that is LAM legal and can later be "unrestricted"
Instead of buying something with a < 2 year life span realistically you will probably get closer to 4 years. IMHO:teach:
Sorry to hear you've lost your license. Might still be an opportunity to learn though... if you know someone on a property, with a trail bike. Do some scrub bashing, better off to get your first scars from the scrub and not the road. ;)

Anything on the list that is 250cc (or more) and is a 4 stroke.
Even the wifes old GS125 would hold 110km/h.:)
110km/h for a 4 stroke road bike is no probs...regardless of number of cylinders or piston configuration.

RTA website:
"Compulsory motorcycle rider training is in place across NSW. In areas with a training centre, people who want a motorcycle licence must satisfactorily complete prelearner training before a learner licence will be issued. Go to the motorcyle page for details of the licensing system for riders."
Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme
Before obtaining a motorcycle rider licence, you must successfully complete the Motorcycle Rider Training Scheme. This scheme is designed to help people gain basic riding skills before riding on the road.
The training and testing is provided at training centres, located across metropolitan and country areas. There is a full list of training centres on this website or call the RTA on 13 22 13 for your nearest centre.
There are two levels of training - pre-learner and pre-provisional. Both levels involve on-road and off-road training.

Learners bike which will actually sustain 110km/h for long periods? I'm thinking of the biggest V-twin (torque?) I can get. Any ideas?
I just bought a 2005 Ducati Monster 620, first bike. Absolutely great to ride, plenty of power/torque even with the restrictor fitted. The only downside is that seeing that Ducati discontinued it at the end of 2006, they are hard to find and people want lots on money for them

The information that I was given suggests that "un-restricting" is a matter of removing a limiting plate from either/ or both the inlet and the exhaust. 30 min job, no cost if DIY. Talk to dealer though for more info...
All that's involved with de-restricting the Hyosung is moving the clip in the carb. Super easy job.

No point getting a small bike mate you'll want more power in about 5 mins.
My first road bike was an 98 R1 last of the carbies was a great bike lots and lots of power just didn't go around corners like the bikes do these days
My second bike was a 03/4 ZX9R ninja that was a great bike felt really safe on it nice sized tank more than enough power, think I got around to 270kms down the strait at PI was a blast really hanging to do it again. The key to having a 750 or 1000 is throtle control, if ya a spanner and crack it open all the time your gona come off and be very sore or if ya unlucky kill someone else or youtself. Might get a quick session there before I sell it.
As you can probably see on the forum my CBR1000 is up for sale and it is scmick.
(BLACK) Perelli Corsa tyres 450kms (Brand New)
give us a call if ya keen it will be the best choice you have ever made.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Suzuki GS500 or GS500F? They are learner legal in ACT/NSW. My thoughts are it will take longer to outgrow a 500 than a 250 so should do me for at least a couple of years while I'm learning.

If the spec's are about the same i would go for the GS650S , the faring would probably make it a better bike for longer rides where the speed limit is 100 - 110 kph .
I think the LAMS system you have over there is great , i remember my first bike , a 91 XV250 VIRAGO . It was ok for puttering around the city but i made the mistake of trying to ride it a few hundred k's south , it had bugger all left when doing the country speed limit (started to run out of puff at 80kph) so overtaking was best avoided .
The XT250 Yamaha road trail i had would top out at about 135 kph (not on a public road of course) but still felt like it was working at 100kph . The upright riding position on that was great for city or suburban riding but got a bit tiresome for any period of time at 100kph .
