View Full Version : No more CRUNCH for Holden
VE hsv maloo
24-07-2008, 08:44 PM
I got told today the new head man at Holden took a visit to the Elzabeth plant.
He was shocked when he saw the crunch colour. Rumour has it he said I hate this colour and its got to go !
So after MOST of the exisiting orders are filled CRUNCH will be no more. Big rumour is that there will be a yellow released, so if you are hanging for a yellow VE might pay to wait just a bit longer. HSV must be pissed off, most of their promo shots of the Maloo are in crunch. This colour is missing from the build your HSV on the website.
What did you think of the crunch colour ?

Same as I think of most of the Hero colours, fusion and Tiger
Mica excepted :spew:

Never thought too much of it so doesnt really worry me.
A nice proper metallic yellow may looks nice.

hmm im a lil confused as to why they would cancel the colour if they're are still orders on it (working on the assumption there are existing orders on it)
I mean sure i'm not keen on it, but clearly some people out there are.

Wouldn't suprise me if crunch is cancelled. Holden doesn't keep colors for long, and we have voodoo and atomic now, so its probably reaching the end of its time.
I find the story hard to believe, Considering the 'new' head man spends alot of his time at fishermens bend, and there are HEAPS of crunch SSs driving in and out of there every day, pretty hard to believe he hasn't seen the color beforehand.

Crunch is an awesome match to the maloos! i cant really understand why some boss would come along and say to can the colour cuz he personally doesnt like it.. At the end of the day its not for him to like it is it..if the customers like it, they will order it and holden wll sell cars..dont see why it would matter either way if it were on theyre line up of orderable colours!

It has been missing from HSV for at least a week, but oddly enough still on Holden site.

I agree it looked not nice on a Holden, but looks a lot better in HSV sedan.

Has anyone noticed how the colour of the little emoticon throwing up is very similar to crunch?
I didn't mind it, not a colour I'd personally buy, but it is nice to see different way out colours on these cars from time to time.

simple fact is some people liked crunch, same as the other "hero" colours such as hyper yellow, devil yellow and morpheous, not to mention the rest of them. If you want no colour choice to avoid offending some sensitive eyes out there maybe holden should allow any colour, as long as it is WHITE.
There you go, problem solved. No more whinging threads about how much people hate certain colours.:soap:

I actually quite like the colour but could never buy it on a car. It's typical of all Holden's 'Hero' colours. I loved the Tiger when it was first released and then every other brand of hotted up car seemed to be wearing it. My biggest fears with those colours is they go out of fashion really quickly so while it might look the goods when you first buy it, 3 years down the track when you try and sell it, nobody wants it. I'm all for nice colours but I'll stick to 'conservative'. That's why I just bought black.
I don't mind the colour but I still want a Calais Sportswagon in Karma.. DRoool
Although I like most of the colours in the Holden range, I think Ford have a better lineup:hide:
Agree there. Bring back devil yellow and british racing green!!

Im sure he would have had prior knowledge of the colour, more then likely he saw the parking area to the North of the plant which is visable from Phillip hwy, more so when there is no workers cars parked in the staff area. In that area there are copius amounts of Crunch Sedans and utes, They have been there for a few months i reckon... So id say he crunched the numbers (pardon the pun) and said bye bye Crunch.
not sure when this sat pass was, but you can make out a few Crunch in there... looks to be earlier in the year because when you drive by now it just looks like rows of crunch, google maps (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=+34%C2%B044'26.59%22S+138%C2%B039'21.19%22E&ie=UTF8&ll=-34.740698,138.655886&spn=0.001087,0.002366&t=h&z=19&iwloc=addr)

Observation:
There are zillions of red SSs, Clubbies and Maloos but very few blue.
There are zillions of blue XRs, GTs and Pursuits but very few red.
If you see a red car on the road 7 out of 8 times it will be a commodore.
FPV introduced red leather in 2007 range and sold about 5 of them, the new W427 is all red leather.

Sad to see it go, I did like it.
I am about to take delivery of a new sportwagon, in white.
I would have loved a nice bright Colour, but holden want subtle Colours for the Calais range, the only Issue I have with it is, the Colours for the top of the range are the same as those at the bottom ( Omega ).
The Calais should have it own Colour range too, like the SS.

Hot House Green best Holden colour ever :)
Loved hot house when it first came out...very sick of it now.
I think a Devil Yellow VE would look sexy, lets hope for them on the next model.
Personally I didn't like crunch at all. My girlfriends dad had it on a VE SS sedan....looked horrible. Now he has it on a VE SSV Ute and it does suit it better than the sedan but it's not a colour I'd buy.
Then agian, everyone is different. He doesn't really like the Turismo blue paint on my Monaro but I love it.
Each to their own.

i just would never buy a red car, fades way to easy too
The fading of red only happened when Car companies use to paint the reds in a solid color (i.e NOT clear over base ) and this lead to oxidisation of the paint ( fading and sunwear ).
Pretty much nowadays 90% of all car manufactures solid colours ( non mettalic) are painted in the clear over base system ( Bar white) and this elimantes the oxidisation process as the clear coat is a lot more durable to wear and tear from the harsh Aussie climate. If my memory serves me correctly the VX was the last commodore to have a Solid Red paint job as i know that the VYs Reds are definantly clear over Base Red.
A quick way to tell is the give the car wax and see what colour the Rag is when the wax is buffed off...... if it is the same colour as the car( or have paint on it) you do "not" have a Clear over base finish if it is un coloured you will have a clear coat on the car.
Cheers Chappie. :)

The colour choices people make for their cars can be one of the most difficult for some people.
I had owned 4 white cars before I bought a Morpheous SS, was not my first choice in fact from looking at the colour choices on the Holden web site I woulf not have picked it I was looking at a black SS but when I was offered the morpheous SS at a real good price and I saw it in the flesh I was sold.
By the way if I was buying now I would look seriously at a crunch ute.

I don't mind Crunch personally - I like it maybe slightly more than Atomic, which I find just a little too green - but I don't think you should order a performance Holden in blue! It's all wrong!

I like seeing them on the road. A nice change to the common black/white/red etc.

It could have been dropped due to the amount of claims Holden Warranty were getting for mis-match of colour.
The delareship i worked at until 2 months ago had every Crunch car re-sprayed to some extent as the bumpers and panels never came close to looking the same.
K-Pow was dropped as they couldnt get the colour to match on the production line properly on consistent basis, it was becoming very expensive for Holden to produce K-Pow coloured cars.

All Holden colours including the solids (Heron White & Red-Hot) have a clear of base coat now. Clear coat helps for durability.
I don`t think it is the most popular colour in the Holden range :errr:
Although I like most of the colours in the Holden range, I think Ford have a better lineup:hide:
How does Ford have a better line up??? They copied the Atomic, and did a bad job of that. Couldn't come up with their own colours. On the FG XR that colour does nothing in comparison to what the Atomic does on the VE SSV.
Too many solid Brights. Their colours make the car look like a plastic toy. Doesn't compliment the form nor the surface details at all.
Holden have been far more successful with exterior colours. Who do you think started the 'Hero' colours trend??? And who followed??
I know for a fact Ford freaked out when Holden brought out their first Hero colour, Tiger Mica. Now all they have been doing is playing chat up, trying over flood the market with lots of colours. Not a good line up or business strategy I think.
Yes...as you can tell, I am Biased.

It's a bit rich to be precious about Holden's claims to the invention of a trend here - 'stand out' colours on performance vehicles was happening in at least the 1960's and I bet earlier. Just its latest label in Aus is 'hero' colour.
Opinions are like belly buttons, interesting to know how you measure the greater success of yourselves over Ford? I for one think the new Fords look great, and have had a better range of colours for the last few years. Some VE colours are great, other not - hence many Holden buyers on here have shite-canned as many of the colours as they have raved about - so more to do I would think.

Im a Holden person, But i have no problems admitting Ford have the better colour line up.
Sure, not all their colours suit everyones taste, but atleast you have a variety. An SS has a choice of 8 colors, and XR6 has a choice of 13. If you dont like Holdens 'Hero' colours of the day, your stuck with one of the basic 'fleet' white/black/red or silver. Atleast with ford you've got a few variations.
Excellent

Crunch is the worst colour in the catalog. I'm glad it's gone, hopefully forever.
Holden came out with the fancy Monaro colours that we hadn't seen before on an Australian made car. Then Ford quickly followed and one-upped Holden when the BA colour catalog came out. Better colour palette than Monaro's I thought.

Colour trends change, its a fact.
in 2000 when i was about to order my Calais, i wanted Tiger, but found out it did not come on the Calais, i was so upset i just ordered white.
Now i'm glad, because Tiger does look dated.
as i said before, i liked the crunch.
but over the weeked i saw three, and the bumpers were a different colour to the body in each case.
also noticed this in other bright colours too.
As an ex-spray painter i notice colours, i can see why holden have dropped the light colours.
