View Full Version : 14.2L/100km for a V6, does that sound right?

i have a vy with a ecotech v6 and on my computer my car says its uses 14.2L/100km on average. I actually drove real slowly for a week and still not much had changed. When ever i go for a ride i can literally watch my fuel go down, is this normal for people or is there a problem with my car?
Depends on how you're driving and what sort of driving.
I'd say in heavy city traffic with a lot of stop start driving that's about right.

i have a vy v6 manual mate and mine will generally show 11 -12 l/100km for a tank.. get around 500km to a tank usually.. can get as low as 7l/100km on the highway
sounds like yours is a bit steep ay

Definitely a problem - unless your average speed is about walking pace. I average slightly less than that in my VX SS, and I put the foot down every now and then ...

i thought so if a v8 is getting less then me there ther is somthing wrong, any1 know wat main problems that might cause it to be so high. My car isnt running rich either because i dont smell fuel when its idleing

The Auto's are bad on fuel mate. My old VS used more petrol than my VY SS, and my VE R8. The manual V6's were heaps better, about 200km a tank better!
My VY SS did 12l/100, my R8 does the same, or 14l/100 if i drive pretty hard with a mix of driving.
My poor old VS only got 350km out of a tank when fanging it around :bawl:

lol - that's not an indication of it not running rich. Chances are it could do with a tune.

Firstly, Trip computer could be wrong.
Measure the litres of fuel pumped at the pump against km's driven. Thats the best way to measure fuel consumption.
If it still proves to be 14L/100kms, I'd say there maybe something wrong somewhere.
By the time the VY's came out V6's were very fuel efficient. I think it should be much better than that. (max 13L/100km - city, driven sensibly)

sixes are overrated for economy. my avalanche whoops the v6 triton & challenger i had. Hell, i have never got under 4oo k out of a tank.

Yeah I can attest to this. My old VS V6 used to do around 14L/100kms all the time. Now the Calais is doing around 13L/100km with exactly the same driving.

VY V6 Fuel efficient?
hahaha.. dont make me laugh...
My old VY II S pack, nanna driving used to get 13L/100 on a good day...
Generally wouldnt do better than 330km out of a tank.
that was with no mods at all.
VE alloytec now gets 11/100 with a fair amount of spirited driving
Mates with VR / VS / VT would be lucky too see 200 out of a tank but they drive hard...
VY V6 aint fuel efficient by any stretch of the imagination.. mine wasnt anyway.

Can you reset the PCM's on the V6's? When was the last time you gave the car a solid service? There are heaps of things that could be causing the increase. Check your air filters and new and clean etc. Also what type of petrol are you using? I get shocking economy on certain brands of fuel... Try sticking with the one brand of fuel, and filling up from the same place each week

well i just replace my air filter with a k & n one but i think u might be right on the fuel, i remember i filled my car up with Vpower from shell and it was running at around 13/100km with me flooring it off every lights but now other family members drive the car and they use regular unleaded.

It depends on how many km/s its averaging over.
My ve ss-v manual is averaging over 20 000kms. It says 12.6l/100kms.
I havnt seen it move in 6 months. I do boot it time to time. Having said this. If yours is averaging over alot of km's like mine. It wont move even if you drive it easy for 2 weeks.
You can reset you trip and it will reset the L/100kms.

I got terrilble mileage off Caltex 91 and Mobil 91 the last time i used either (17L/100km)... I get good economy from 7-11 E10, and United E10 (14.8L/100kms), Which is the same economy i get when i use 98 Premium. My car is a LS1 6spd ute as well... I work my figures out from how manys K's i do, and how many Litres i put in...
Try a few good batches of fuel (The ethanol mixed fuel, might actually seem worse off at the start, as it cleans out the crap from your tank, but once its been through a few cycles, you will notice the difference! and the benifits!)

I have to agree with the E10 i had to put shell fuel in mine lastweek and it's plain gutless and seems to drink it like lolly water .
Where as i had been running E 10 SAF 95 Octane and i now wish i had of stuck with that ,not that i fill the tank evey week i have a budget of $60.00 approx 38 litres which is fine but not on shells fuel .
So far i have only done around 170 k this week and it won't be long before the fuel light comes on,and i haven't even been driving it like i usually do (LIKE I STOLE IT)...Wish i had a V8.

I've got a VS Statesman (V6) & I've had it since new - its now done 230,000 k's. Around town I rarely get under 14 litres per 100 k's (with an av speed of approx 40kph). On the open road (ie doing over 80kph) the fuel use drops to around 9 litres per 100 k's.
I use E10 unleaded - with occassional fill up of premium when prices are low (not often lately !!!)
When newer, the fuel use was around 0.5 litres per 100 k's lower.
A few months ago it started sucking juice harder & my climate control didn't work properly (vents weren't functioning). Turned out I had a vacuum hose split.

A critical factor here is average speed and Jbird hasn't told us that yet. Do you have that or is that not accessible on your car? My car does around 15L/100km at ave speed of 50kmh but can get down under 10L/100km as I get up to 100kmh average.
Therefore, without knowing an average speed it is impossible to put things in context. Without that everything else is just a waste of breath..... :(
Also, as someone else mentioned, if you don't reset your trip computer then even a month of excessively hard or grandpa driving is unlikely to impact the reading much.

Would't mind betting thats City drive. I get 8-10 litres per 100 on the highway, but that jumps to 18 -21 litres per 100 in the city.
36 litres per 100 on Qld Raceway circuit.

here you go...
over 10284km... 29 refuels over a 7 month period (one time there was 11 tanks over a 5 day period)... logged by odo and pump calculated out (not trip computer - didn't have one) VS III 5 speed V6...
best economy - 9.15L/100kms
worst economy - 15.70L/100kms
average economy - 11.48L/100kms
so yeah... take into account though, the 11 tanks in 5 days was a cross australia trip doing just on 3500kms which would have effected average...
i didn't record enough usage for the entire life of the vehicle but i'd say you're trip computer average is a bit thirsty...
try calculating 10 tanks at the pump and see how you go before doing anything about it???

I do nothing but highway driving and my fuel consumption sits at just below 10L/100km with a best of 8.6.
But driving around the city or in traffic, sorry to say that doesn't sound unusual at all.

I find it quite amusing in this day and age with the general public's perception that V8's are gas guzlers. The economy listed above is normal for a V6, yet that is what I get out of my cammed LS1 too. O and with more than twice the power to boot

As said before we need to know the average speed. My VY wagon sits on about 13.5L/100 but the average speed is only around 35km/h. My VT Clubby sits on about 15.5L/100 with similar driving.

I've never had a V6 but 14.2 doesn't sound too bad for a 35kmh average to me. Mine would be at least 2L/100km higher than that with that average speed.

That sounds pretty spirited alright! My VZ Alloytech averaged 13.4l/100km towing a 1450kg Verada wagon on a car trailer.
All you V8 crew think the V6s aren't too flash, there's testament right there. Two cars, one V6, the same consumption as one V8, one car. I'd still rather a V8 for the boat though.
I'm not sure about the earlier models but (like a couple of folks have mentioned) you won't get an accurate real world consumption figure unless you reset the trip computer on the fly. If you don't you're only receiving an average figure since last reset.
At 110kmh cruise ctl I managed a best of 8.9, normally 9.0-9.4 in general high speed stuff but as low as 7.8 at 90kmh cruise.
Reset when idling in the driveway and it hits 99.9l/100km!

Well for the past month I have been driving a 2002 Chevy Silverado extended cab 4x4 with a 5.3 V8. It's mainly around town driving, and I replaced almost a full tank yesterday. I reset the odometer each time, and I put in 23.5 gallons (88.8L), which covered 390 miles (624km). This works out to be 16.6mpg. In metric, this converts to 14.1L/100km! This was a good example of an accurate average, and not sitting all day every day on the freeway, and I have a heavy right foot. About 30 miles of this was some of this was even towing 3 4-wheel ATVs up a mountain off-road So is a V6 sedan, which gets the same economy as a 3 ton V8 pickup truck, good? Just something to compare it to.

when i was in brisbane my VY V6 would get 11.8's - i would reset after each fuel fill (and still do)
In melbourne I get 13.2 to 13.8 is the highest i have seen - when i returned to brisbane earlier this year it dropped down to early 12's
Gives you an idea of how traffic can impact this - same car and no changes

Spot on average speed is huge in petrol consumption. My BA XR6 4 speed auto weighs 1709 kg so a good deal heavier than the VY V6 thread starter. Now im normally in the 15's even 16's doing the stop start to work. Short trips to shops etc avg speed low to mid 30's. But get her out in the highway and its a different story. Also as others have said dont use you trip computer to work out your L/100km use the number of kays done on tank versus number of litre you put in at the bowser. Also im still showing 9.8L/100km on my trip meter (as I reset trip computer for the trip) as I only got back two weeks ago from an interstae trip see below. But id be in the 15's again now.
Got back Sunday after putting a bit over 3700km under her belt for the return trip. (Car has done a touch over 24000 km's now). With three adults and very full boot of luggage. I was happy with the results sitting on 115km/ph in 110km zones and 105km/ph in the 100km zones (which is probally 1km/ph above the posted limits as my BA is really doing 96km when speedo says 100km. I averaged 9.8l/100km overall .
The low for the trip was 9.4l/100km and (the high was 10.1/100km - which included some highway kay's and about 250 km's of running around and short trips when we where there). I thought when I fitted my pacemaker headers (4495's) and 3' metal cat & XR6T exhaust maybe that stuffed my 02 sensor as I get 15l/100km or a bit more more in the city - short trips and heaps of stop start stuff. But after that trip im certain my 02 sensor is all good otherwise I cant imagine I would have got that kind of economy.

My VU Manual gets around 13L/100km (475km/Tank) with a few squirts every now and then and thats purely city driving, soo all start stop....
I get down to about 9-10L/100km (650km/Tank) on long drives....
When i say "tank" thats about 63-64L as it very rarely will take more than that when its on empty.
My VT v6 drank a bit of juice but not 14.2L/100km.
I have logged a fair few refuels (pump and odo not trip computer) and I tend to average high 13's low 14's. The worst was 15.4..
After a going through a full tank I took a snapshot of my trip this morning and got 13.8L at a 44.6 average..

I ahd a VY wagon (V6 auto) at work from new until 2 years ago - 14 to 15 l/100 K would be typical (could just about manage 400 Km per tank (the last few fills before the lease was up the trip computer would say abut 14 l/ 100Km or just over, my calc at the pump - get mileage for the fuel card each time - was nearer 15l /100Km. This is commuting in Sydney peak traffic - Wagon weighs 2 tons on the weighbridge with work tools and equipment - made full use of the space in the back of that wagon. I would get some comments that it was lowered - it was not lowered - it's just the load I was carrying. My VS sedan (V6 auto exec) would get maybe 330 Km to tank - probably filling with about 50 litres. Very short trips usually - I think nearer to 16 l/100Km. Clubby gets about 13 l/100Km but is driven in better conditions, trips are longer. Totally depends on driving conditions, as said average speed is the major factor - low av speed high fuel consumption. I wouldn't call the V6 economical, not bad on a longer trip at around 10 l/100K or under, but my Clubby can achieve this also, maybe cheating a little with the clubby as it's manual, VS V6 is auto. Average speed is key factor.

As others have said you need to look at average speed to get a true indication. One person's idea of city driving might be completely different to anothers!
I used to live in sydney, lots of short trips to shops, train station etc and I'd get in the 15's, maybe 14's if i was lucky.
Now live down just outside canberra, the missus drives the car into canberra every day for work (people down here would consider it 'city' driving, but you dont when from sydney lol), and the calais is now averaging around 11.8. Thats standard tune, 91 octane fuel. No other changes than moving from syd to canberra.

04-08-2008, 10:08 PM
You must be running woolies 91 fuel and doing very short trips with bulk right foot I'm guessing? Thats what I used to get in my stock as a rock VS V6 auto acclaim when running crap fuel driving 4kms to work each day and thrashing it everywhere else. When I went to 98 octane it dropped to 12L/100KM, and now my missus drives it in peak hour to work each day and gets 10.5-11L/100KM. Thats on 98 octane and she drives it not much different to me. And it has just hit 250,000KM on the clock. So put in new plug leads and plugs gapped right, check the O2 sensor, temp sensor and thermostat is working and run BP or Mobil 98.
