Guys
I have done a search and have read some of the answers in the threads I found. They generally gave me some feedback to what I was looking at but I still need to pose a couple of questions.
I really am wanting to get this done and have a really top notch job. I have seen some of the photos that some of you have added and they look good but I can guarantee you I would stuff it.
I spoke to the dealer this morning and he said that they could do it when I had my car in there for service. He said they would take all calipers off, clean them and paint them. I am just wondering if there are others who would do the same thing and not charge me dealer premium
Also, colours. I remember an issue of Motor where a guy in Melbourne had painted a VE Senator, with GTS kit, Lamborghini Green (sorry don't remember the colour name). His brakes were a tangerine colour from memory and I think that the Dayglo red from HRT would look awesome against Black. So, if you weren't using a standard VHT colour, can you get a standard Holden colour (e.g Crunch for arguments sake) in a heat resistant paint. I wanted something different as everyone (and no offence is meant) has red calipers.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I have many mates who are spraypainters and they generally used 2pac. Seems to last well and you can use any colour you want.
I am very suprised a dealer offered you such a service. I would have thought a panel shop would be a more likely place to get the job done. However I would focus on the smaller operations as larger ones wouldnt bother with such a small fiddly job.
If you have a mate with the equipment or who is a spraypainter get it done over one weekend over a few beers - thats probably the best bet.

Use 2 Pac Paint, Then You Can Have Any Colour You Want!

My suggestion is dont do it at all, its the worst most painful job, if you dont have a hoist and rattle gun

I did it on my ute thought it was a pretty easy job, jack her up, whip the wheel of, undo a few bolts and take the calipers out. Give em a rub with a fine wire brush, and then get stuck into em with the sand paper (can't remember what grit i used but it was fairly fine). Hit it with the VHT caliper paint and hey presto it's done. Took a few hours and cost me less than 20 bucks. It was a pretty easy task even for a uni student haha.
Be curious to see what the dealer hits ya for it mate. Do it yourself and save a bunch of coin i say:)

I did mine black. They dont stand out, but then again, they're standard brakes and aren't that big anyway. Looks good IMO. I was gonna go orange. Red's done to death...

The dealer would just use a spray can,,you need them done in 2K,, so if you need them done right,,have to take them right off,,then you have to bleed the brakes again, and be with out the car for a couple of days.. l have a full set of vx-vy ss calipers here for you for $80,,then you can take your time on painting the calipers,, and not with out your car. then you will have a spare set. Thanx

I know there not the same as yours but i did mine with
1 can of paint stripper
1 tin of prepsol
1 can of caliper paint
I simply stripped the paint off, wiped down with prepsol, painted calipers, put in the oven at 60deg to dry faster
All done in 1 day easy

Love your work ASSASIN :goodjob: Do you think some fine grade wet and dry paper would do the trick or not with regard to the hsv symbol or is the file the way to go?
Cheers,
Darren

I tried the sand paper first but found it was taking the paint off around the corners to much ( if you know what i mean ) The file gave it more of a machine finish look. Just get a nice fine cut file and it only takes a couple of minutes when the paint is dry.

I decided to give it a stab myself. Got some heat proof red engine paint on a hot day and did it myself. Quite back yard but it worked and They are still as good as ever months after I did it. Taped up the black bits and then wrapped the whole thing in newspaper. I didn't even have to take the calipers off. Probably should have but this was easier and I still got the desired result. Here's some photos.

This is one of those jobs that has to be done properly as it will not last or look any good if done on the cheap or with insufficient preparation. My advice is do it yourself before you let the dealer loose on it. While the callipers are off I'd be putting a kit through them so they dont have to be done again for a while. Go easy with the paint stripper if you're not overhauling the callipers. Paint stripper and piston seals dont go well together and could end up with a great looking car (shame it didnt stop) scenario and can open a big can of legal worms for you if things go pearshaped due to criminal negligence, ie; "Unlicenced mechanic modifies brakes that result in fatal collision" Show us how they end up when you've done them ;) good luck
Meh.. Mine are still as good as the day I painted them. I guess if you want highly detailed work like those HSV calipers then it's probably worth doing professionally, If you got standard silvers that you want to bling up then it's cheap and easy as.
cost
can of degreaser - $2
can of heat proof engine red paint - $16
All you need is a nice hot day so doing it in Summer would be better.

Mate they look awesome and that would be something I'm after.
Thanks to everyone for their replies. It still basically comes down to a number of factors.
Trying to find time at all is generally a chore in itself and then if I do it's usually taken up with kids and family stuff. So, time is an issue, not the right knowledge is another. I keep hearing that if I want the result I'm after, the calipers need to come off and to be honest, I don't want to touch the brakes. I will be completely honest with you and say I have no car knowledge. I know how to drive it and what makes it look good but the mechanicals of it - I'll leave that to those professionals out there.
That's why the dealer idea was good. They can have the car, remove the calipers and then install them again and everything should be working right. If I take 'm off - without the knowledge it goes back to a thread written above.

I was going to paint my calipers but soon realised it would only draw more attention to my shocking rim - brake size ratio. Thanks eBay...

Im going to paint/get my calipers painted red also, there just stock at the moment though, which is a letdown, but i think painting them red would give them a much needed facelift, is there a certain type of paint you would have to use, i noticed heat resistant was mentioned, would this be the preferred type to use or doesnt it matter

Here's the 2 sets I have done on my cars.
The back of my Monaro. The cradles have been chromed and there is 8 coats of paint on them.

These are the standard front calipers that I polished on my ute. They look a lot better with the cast marks sanded down too.

i recently had 2nd hand harrop monster kit rebuilt and it cost me about $250 to have the calipers chemically stripped and powdercoated. that didnt include the cost to strip down etc etc as they were being pulled apart to be rebuilt at the time. all up im happy with the job done.

Sorry to drag this thread up again but it looks like I can finally do my calipers properly.
So my question is and it seems to be a hotly debated question. 2-pac or powdercoated. If it is 2-pac does it still have to be a special temp paint

This may or may not be of any help but i painted the hats of my discs in plain black 2-pac and they are perfectly fine. Although i'm not sure how hot they get compared to the calipers.
Cheers,

I personally have done this on three different cars all mine in the past and not 1 problem after 3 yrs.
1 painted calipers in 2pac [nothing heatproof about it!]
2 painted discs in matt black spray can bought from local $2 shop. {definately nothin special there}
Never had them burn, blister or nothing!
REMEMBER that you do not drive a v8 supercar doing 4000mph around bathurst and your brakes do NOT glow red hot etc with pads on fire!
The worst thing that you can suffer is the paint discolouring or blistering and at about $5 per brake to do this to WHO CARES? Give it a go!:goodjob:
