View Full Version : Calais VE V8 Transmission Oil Change at 10,000km?
Hi All,
Just curious to know whether I should be changing my transmission oil?
I am just about to hit 10,000km and going to give it a change in engine oil which i plan to do every 5,000km.
Just wanted some advice as to whether I should also get my Transmission Oil changed? Bought it as a brand new car and the transmission oil has never been changed. Holden Service department said during a phone call that they dont change it till it hits over 100,000km!! which seems a bit excessive to me.
Anyhow, any advice is really appreciated.

Never heard of anyone changing transmission oil that often unless they regularly do competition work and use special stuff. I'm no expert but I'd say Holden are right. In fact, I had heard (may not be true) that the A6 was a sealed unit so changing the oil was not easy without pulling it apart??? Engine oil every 5,000km fine, not A6.

As Wonky said no need unless the car has a hard life.
You could change the transmission oil and the diff oil around the same time .(40,000-50,000 mark )
Just check the transmission oil every so often for usage or changes in the fluid.
100,000 seems to be a popular figure with holden.

MK1, as Wonky said trannie oil aint important unless your flogging the box. e.g. dragracing. In regard to oil I'm doing my Calais every 7500km which is twice the recommended lifecycle, remembering it takes 8.3 litres in the sump. This equates to approx. $120 worth of good oil. Hope this helps.

Hi All,

The Dextron 6 lasts for ages I think I read 400k ! having said that if you price some Dextron 6 up I am sure you won't want to change yours every 10000's.
From Holden it was $32.00 a litre and you need 9 !!! Mainlube has it for $27.50for 10 litres.
I did however change mine and got it a lot cheaper than that from a distributer that doesn't have a licence to sell Dextron 6 and sells it as Quick Shift 6. $120.00 for 20 litres.
cheers
thanks heaps for your help guys.

Genuine Dexron 6 is under $10 per litre.
Can't see Mainlube supply 10 litres for $27.50 buddy. All their stuff is top dollar, no matter how good it is!

Oops I meant $27.50 per litre for 10 litre packs which is $275 bucks a pack, see link.

Where do you get the Dextron 6 for under $10 bucks a litre. The $32 bucks a litre was from Holden thats why I looked elsewhere.

There is an important trick to do with making sure you have the right amount of fluid in the box as well.

How do you check the oil on a sealed unit? Any pics?
Thanks,
Alex

Ah, so you thinks it's sealed too? Nobody else mentioned it plus some mentioned changing oil so I though I was going :weirdo:

Nope it isn't sealed there is a filler plug that can be popped out easily and a check level plug. It looks like a drain plug but it's to check the fluid level.

88861004- $10 litre- AC Delco branded. Many dealers keep this.
Recently Holden added their own GM branded part numbers.
88861003-about $8.50 for 0.946 litre.
88861045- about $31 for 3.785 litres.
These are a bit cheaper, but most dealers would have to order it in at the moment.

It's only just come down in price then as a couple of months ago it was $32 bucks a litre. Did you see the price Mainlube were charging as well.
These prices are for the new Dextron Vl right ?
Steve from Mainlubes post ......
Also there's new price on Dexron VI as first shipment is long gone, sold (we got bent over a little with this one with rights and paperwork) it's now $27.50 per litre +gst.
cheers

YES, this is Dexron 6. It is clearly marked as Dexron VI.
We have been selling the 88861004 p/n all 2008 for this price. Not sure who told you the genuine stuff over the parts counter was that expensive, but they were clearly mis-informed.
