View Full Version : Adventra wheel nuts

I had some new tyres fitted to my Adventra (before anyone asks they were Bridgestone Turanza’s) last Tuesday and when I went to remove the front wheels in the weekend to clean the brake dust of the rear of the rim I couldn’t get one wheel nut off the right front wheel.

When I went to undo the nut it was really hard to undo and when I got to a certain point it just locked solid, I tried putting a big extension on the tyre lever to add more leverage and it still wouldn’t move – so I tried tightening it up hoping it would reseat and then I could undo it– it took a fair bit of force to get it to even start to tighten up then it just started to spin freely – now it won’t tighten up or come off the stud.

The tyre shop won’t do anything at present because their mechanic is on holiday till next week. Have any of you ever had a similar sort of experience and any ideas of how to remove the nut or should I wait till next week. I normally could wait a week but I’m doing a lot of driving this week around NZ on some pretty crappy roads (hence the replacement tyres) and I’m worried that in the unlikely event of putting a stone through the tyre I won’t be able to get wheel off.

Thanks in advance

John

Buy an aerosol tyre sealer mean time as your man has cross threaded the nut and your large bar efforts sounds like you have stripped the spline that holds the wheel stud. (nothing much else you could've done anyway.

If this is the case they will have to cut the wheel nut off and hope the damage is with the stud as if not then the hub will have to be replaced as well.

Make sure you are there to inspect the damage when they fix this as they could just wack another stud in the (maybe damaged) splined hole and you will have the problem reoccur again at a later date:)

Tell them you went to change the wheel and it was farkin tight so you gave it all you could (thinking if this happened to my wife how would she cope, not impressed) and it went loose so he must've cross threaded the nut and now the spline on the stud is stripped and you want to see if the hub is damaged.

Don't tell them you used a big bar (can of worms)

Don't let them get away with it.

Cheers

I was there when they removed the nut - the mechanic at the tyre shop used a pair of vice grips and a slide hammer and the nut came off real easy. The thread on the stud was stripped at the very end. They then replaced the stud and all is well - the splined area in the hub didn't look as if it had been affected.
