hey guys , im a new member and just wondering what sort of first mods to do.
as i dont have a lot of money but i take care and pride in my car, i own a vt calais gen3, its got factory leather , sunroof, hbd bodykit. so far ive taken the resignators out to make it have a little bit of noise, ive also replaced the standard filter with a redline performance filter. and so far thats it. as i have a family with kids i dont want to go to over board with noise and stereos but i would like to do more to the car to make it over better in performance and looks as well as safety.

Putting on a decent exhaust system and a tune will be the best money you can spend on the car. Even just a cat-back system and a good tune will yield great gains without being too pricey.

Depends on lots of factors i.e. budget, what you want the car to act like etc.. The basics are intake (2 hole mod is very cheap and effective), exhaust and tune.

It has all been covered many times before in great detail so see Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=55597) and in particular probably Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=33344). Post #7 in there is very good for covering basic mods.

yep as above has said. Good bang for your buck mods are exhaust and tune. Even cheaper would be to do a 2 hole mod. Which basically involves cutting an extra hole in your airbox to allow more air in. Combine this with a bigger 4" MAF pipe will be one of the cheapest mods you can do. You can get mailorder maf/mafless tunes from various sponsers on here that will transform your car without a doubt

My opinion ...

Being a VT yours should have 2 holes already made in the front of the airbox. Remove the 2 rather restrictive tubes going from the airbox to the radiator cover/inside the front guard and replace then with a "MCAI cold air intake".

You can get them from Holden for about $40 or I've got one you can have if you're prepared to pay postage costs. :) You'll have to make the 2nd hole in the MCAI to match up with the 2nd smaller hole in your airbox.

Couple that to a catback you can potentially fit yourself for about $300-$400 off FEEbay.

Mailorder MAF or MAFless tune from one of the reputable sponsors such as Delco or someone in your local area for about $500 approx.

Less than $1000 outlayed on what would appear to be fairly minimalist mods but it'll be a different car to drive.

The 2 hole mod for bugger all cost will give you getting on for as much improvement as CAIs costing hundreds more, so depends on whether you are looking for every single kw (which it doesn't sound like you are) or cost effective mods in which case it's great. It then leaves you more money for other mods. As DaveHAT said, the 2 hole mod (or Monaro CAI), a second hand exhaust and mail order tune from someone like Delco will transform your car for about $1000.
