View Full Version : some urgent advice please - diff gears + calibration
short version before long version:
can someone recomend a holden dealer/tuner who can tune my new diff gears who know what their doing
long version:
ive read some horror stories as to how incompetent holden dealers, but today i found out 1st hand
yesterday i installed a new diff onto my car with a shorter gear ratio. i went from a non lsd 2.8 to a lsd 3.46, and as expected, the speedo has gone out (reads about 30kph above what im actually doing)
so i booked it into a holden dealership (i wont mention which one, but PM if you want to know) so that they can tune the speedo correctly
. 1st problem - they have never heard of a 3.46 gear ratio! i literally didnt know what to say. i said, that they came standard on the vz v8 holdens mate, and he said no no no, there is no such thing as a 3.46 gear. he then said there was a 3.64 gear, to which i gave him a big "wtf" look.
i even told him to look at the sticker on the side of the diff, and he said he doesnt trust stickers
what next - he hasnt heard of a "commodore"???
. 2nd problem - i drove away, and nothing was changed! when i went back and told him, he asked how i was sure, and i said, i think i know the difference between doing 100 and 127kph, but he still looked at me like i was retarted.
i did 2 tests to confirm the speedo was out.
. 1st, on the freeway, going about 2200rpm, and going with the traffic, who were roughly doing 100kph, i was physically doing around 100kph, but the speedo read 127kph
. 2nd test, told a mate to drive at exactly 70kph, and i drove right next to him, my speedo was reading 88kph, so that confirms it.
so can anyone recomend a holden dealer in vic eastern suburbs that actually knows that their on about? i called up 2 other dealerships, and asked if they can recalibrate a speedo because of a diff gear change, and they sounded like they had never heard of such a thing before
i really am astouneded that a genuine holden dealership doesnt know their own products
ps: i should add, vcm suite cannot do it, as i have the alloytec engine. autotechnique actually carried out the installation, but only realised when they tried to start tuning that alloytec and vcm suite are not compatible.

Problem is as he said that he has an Alloytech and programs like EFILive and VCM Suite won't work with them. Autotechnique is the home of the guys who write VCM so if they can't do it he needs a Tech 2.
Then he is relying on idiots like the knob he described above.
Kpop, PM me the names of the places you tried - hopefully my dealer wasn't one of them! They have a bit to do with modded cars and will hopefully be able to help.
i did a bit of reading on the street commodores forum, and found this, it talks about a PPK value:
"yeah mate thats what i have the 5 speed auto, so really i
couldnt tell you if first would be too short. Possibly..
i think there is a gear speed calculator in the big diff
thread. Anyway, my dealer had no idea how to recalibrate
my speedo, first visit cost 75 buks and they did nothing.
Then he service manager trys to tell me that changin your
diff ratio wont change your speed just your revs, hmm
yeah ok mate. So Then he says come down again and try the
ppk value (pulses per kilometre) off a v6 adventra cause
it has same engine box and dif ratio as mine. He tells me
he doesnt have an equation to work out what the new ppk
should be. So in the meantime i looked on this site, and
whadaya know, i found one! So i rock into the dealer
friday mornin, tell this service manager i have an
equation to work it out, his response : pff try it if you
want.. So we punched the number in that i worked it out
to be, took it for a run and it was smack bang on what my
gps was telling me. Wrote the equation down and went
through it with the service manager cause im such a nice
bloke lol:P So its all good now, at 100km/h its doing
approx 2250rpm and 2400 at 110. A bit higher than id
like, but ohwell what can ya do "
does anyone know anything further about this, thanks.

In your VX SS though I assume? Totally different kettle of fish to an Alloytech!

AARRGGHH.. I hate that! i thought i could actually give someone some advice for a change (instead of sucking info from other people), i didnt even realise it was an alloytech.... I'm a d!ckhead! sorry.
By the way, does anyone actually moniter the language on here? F%$ck!! or is everyone just trying to be semi polite?

No probs I'm sure - you certainly weren't the only one to do that. :) As for monitoring, the mods do keep an eye on things and if you overstepped the mark you'd soon be on a short holiday (if you weren't too far over the top) and probably a permanent one with a repeat offence.

The Alloytech is supported by HPT and has the Final Drive Ratio & VSS pulse per mile/km in it , can't say i have changed that in an Alloytech tune but i have done it in my One Tonner and it's not hard .

just a question while were on changing ratios, is the only reason for the tune to adjust the speedo? or is there something more? thanks for any replys and sorry to OP dont wanna hijack your thread..
because i went from a 2.89 to a 3.45, my speedo is now 20% out
what is HPT? ill have to look into it. im booked into holden (again) at 1pm today, only reason im going back is that i essentially paid, for nothing to be done. they better not ask for payment today.
well, some good news and a happy ending :)
Ross from Autotechnique called me this morning asking how things went yesterday, and i told him not so good, so he said come by and theyll try tuning it on the dyno this time. 2 hrs and a software update later, my car is back to normal :)
the 3.45's are great, so much more responsive, i can actually go up a hill in 5th, and the car wont roll back on a steep slope at the lights
a big thanks to Ross and Mario at Autotechnique for all their help (and the other guy i didnt catch his name) :goodjob:
to finish off, some random pics i took of my car sitting on the dyno

It's great that it all worked out kpop and thanks for your comments.
For the record: "a big thanks to Ross and Mario at Autotechnique for all their help (and the other guy i didnt catch his name) :goodjob:", The other guy just so happens to be Greg...me. But don't worry about forgetting me. Many people tell me i'm easy to forget, that I am gay and I do a great job of cleaning the workshop.
It's all true, as is the part about me going to auditions on a regular basis.
(All of the above is in-house drivel I should add).
The gay bit... mmm, I best nip this in the bud right now... on which note I have to add that I don't mind assisting in some blossoming of the ocassional bud (not buddy!)..but enough...I shall move on :):)

kpop, mate, that was me! when i had an SV6. Sorry i didnt see this thread earlier could have helped you out with an equation, you just punch in a ppk value through tech 2 at the dealer. I had to give the service mangager that lesson. But i see you have sorted it out now so all good:)

Good to see you got it all worked out kpop, although it seems if the dealer service guys knew what they were doing they should have been able to do it for you very quickly as stew297 said.
did holden refund your money for the "recal"??
didnt end up getting a refund. the dealer employee sounded like he was from mars, and i was already sick of arguing with him
pretty surprised that holden dont know their own stuff, very odd.
all good now, thanks to everyone who helped  :goodjob:
