hi guys ive been talking to the guys at CHE about a cam. they said to get a 222/224. what do you guys think for a every day car. other mods done so far are otr , mafless tune , 3.91s , z grip. Am getting a ripshifter in the next few weeks but would love to do the cam at the same time. And should the heads be changed at the same time.??
like to hear from guys with this cam and mods to c if you happy with it??
Thanks in advanced

That cam is perfect for an everyday car - not noisy or cranky, but will unleash a few extra ponies. The guys at CHE know their shit, so if that is what they recommended then go with it. CHE did all the work on mine and it is great fun...

that cam is a good size. 224/228 you should look in to very common. i did cam, heads underdrive pulley,z grip clutch, 3.9s. got 297kw at the rears with 720 nm torque. spins 20s 1st and 2nd with ease. you will feel:) the power differance.

The 222/224 cam is a common one and has been used by many as a dd cam with great success. Dale and the CHE know what they are doing with LSI's and produced quite a few quick ones.
There are alot of cams out there and heaps of info to digest. Sams did a test on cams and a small 212/212 kept up with larger cams until quite high in the rev range.
Maybe ask Dale about other cam variants and a custom grind job.

the 222/224 is an old cam and there is much better cams out there the this
but it is a tried and tested cam
In saying this I have a 222/224 in my car and cant say anything bad about it
speak to Sonny@marrano's he has his own custom ground cams which are making some good power

I concur with the others, it is a very good, streetable cam and makes good power - 260-275rwkw in a M6. I had one in my car and loved it, only changing to a 224/228 after I put heads on.
I would prefer it on higher lift, maybe XE-R or LSL (say, 219/223 @ 111+2 on LSL lobes) lobes nowadays.
Cheers,

It was the favorite cam of choice from 2004-2006. Now my opinion is that there are better ones in a variety of ways thave have arrived since e.g. the 220 220 112.
Heads will help right through the range and improve both max power and also fuel economy usually.

Cant recommend getting a CAM enough mate. I installed one just recently and it is fun as. Chose your profile after reading a lot. Do a search on CAM and you'll have hours of reading ahead. Secret is in the tuning.

I'd go the 220/220.. O hang on I did. It runs more lift than the 222/224 and frankly beats it everywhere. Throw Heads and a big exhaust in with it and it will crank out 300rwkw all while behaving like a stocker but feeling like a stroker with a good 7000rpm top end.

I would go for that cam mate. CHE put in a 224/228 114LSA in my ute 2 weeks ago. I made 285rwkw through an auto. It drives very smooth and has plenty down low. CHE will be giving you honest advice, I have been very happy with them.

I did a 228/230's cam last year, best mod I ever did. Nice and lumpy which is what I wanted, my M6 pulled 280rwkw. If you got the extra cash for heads and you think you'll end up doing it later down the track, then it's best to do it now, save you a few dollars in the long run. Either way you go, I know you'll enjoy it!

Was just thinking today how much I loved my old LS1 with the 222/224@112 cam with Dart heads, but as Steve says, there may be better options nowdays.

Mate just go and see Sonny and get a custom camshaft from him, I called about one wanting 280 to 300rwkw but I ended up going the twin turbo route, LOL...

Mate, I have rockers $450 and 921 Valve Springs $400 for sale that you could use with your cam change. These prices mightn't show up but that is the going rate.

What about a DR Chain for insurance whilst your at it.
I also went for some titanium retainers as well and
pushrods, the latter probably not as important as the
retainers.

Yep Chromoly pushrods are a good idea
Titanium Retainers are nice too but not really required. I got them, but thats cause they came with my PRC springs
DR Chain.. Waste of money IMO. I mean really, who breaks a bloody cam chain. Dale will tell you the same.

hi guys
just been doing a bit of reading about the 222/224 cam. it seems to be a great cam for the daily driver. But seem that sonny has a custom cam that is smaller and better power gains.
I still want good fuel econ as i have average speed of about 35-40kms. im only getting about 310km to a tank now.
I stilll cant decided?????

There's a thread in Oztrack's forum about the 220 220 112 cam. I'm hoping to order mine this week.:smilesandbanana:
Supposedly outperforms the bigger cams and gives good economy. Might be worth a look.

I'm looking into a cam for myself at the moment too.
From what I've read I'm thinking of going with the 228/230 for a little agro..
I just don't want too much agro either.....How's the idle & drive like with yours???
I'm also thinking of the new Weiland manifold people are talking about....But I dunno if I'll do it all straight away

My advice is to think long and hard about having a cam. It is not as cheap as it sounds and they WILL use heaps more fuel. With the ave of 35-40km/h driving you will be looking at 23l/100 or so. Anyone that tells you otherwise is dreaming.
My car has a smallish cam, converter, dual 3 inch, 3.9's, ud pulley, otr etc. All the goodies for a cam except heads and I make about 280rwkw. My car is great fun and I love it but for the money I have spent I would have been so much better off going with a turbo set up right from the start.
Get Dale to put a single turbo kit and if your car is auto get a box from craig and you are done, your car will be nice to drive, easy to turn back to standard and it would smoke any normal 346 cammed LS1 on the road.
If I had my time again I would do that.......but then again I might keep all my goodies and still turbo it :)

Mate it will be the best thing you have ever done! I got my ve done nearly 2 months ago and i still get excited to drive it. Just talk to Sonny about getting a cam, he did it all for me. You tell him what you want from the car and he will do a cam to match.
I didn't get a DR chain, but Sonny recommended pushrods and dual valve springs.

I don't want to turn this into a turbo Vs everything else thread but don't be so sure about the turbo car smoking everything else and being the 'better' way to go. It will still set you back more and have its own quirks that you might not like (massive heat soak, underbonnet temps etc.). A cam upgrade it still a very viable option. As others have mentioned, you will use more fuel if it is a big cam but a smaller cam will retain very reasonable economy but deliver a usable increase in power.

I do agree with you and I am not trying to start a cam vs turbo thread, I just want to put into perspective the bad sides of having a cammed car. I have not owned a turbo LS1 and I have only ever been in a few.
I just beleive that if I had to live with either one everyday in traffic etc the turbo would be my choice.

I also have the 220/220 with around 280rwkw and as the car sits at the moment the avg speed is 27.6km/h with fuel usage 20.7l. Do a lot of searching and try to filter through the crap , but don't be afraid to ask questions mate , I researched for 3 mths before I got my cam.:goodjob:

G'day MYVYSSUTE,
The first stage Sonny did for me when he did up my VX SS was to install one of his custom cams plus a 3.91 diff, OTRCAI, 921 dual valve springs, push rods, titanium retainers, full Di Filippo exhaust and a tune. That's pretty much the same as what you've got now less the cam. The cam is a torque cam not a power cam and gave me 262rwkW and 670Nm and I get about 420kms from a tank of premium with some freeway driving to and from work each day. I am stoked with the package Sonny suggested for me and I'm sure you'll be stoked with a package he suggests for you too!
Good luck with it all!

Gday mate.
My VY has many similar mods to your car and I have the 222/224 112LSA cam installed by powertorque and I can say with total sincerity that I am not dreaming about the car being a total blast to drive. It has 260RWKW on the powertorque dyno and bloody flies (its a wagon too so it is a heavy bastard). I regularly get fuel consumption figures of 17 - 19L per 100km's with average speeds of 35 - 45kph and I couldnt be happier with the thing. It is not hugely lumpy but definately sounds more agro than a std cammed car and I can still give it to the missus to drive with out worrying about it bunny hopping all over the place.
I drive it every day and when I went to powertorque for the cam I was looking at a larger one to get the really lumpy sounding idle but I didnt wnt to have to rev the thing past 6500rpm so I could still get good engine life so they steered me towards the 222/224 comp cam saying that it woudl give me everything I was looking for and I just said "ok, you guys are the pro's go for it" and I have not been able to wipe the smile off my face even since.
A mate of mine has a near stock VX clubby and he is blown away by driving my wagon and is currently saving for a cam for is car.
Just do it mate and dont get carried away by going too big.
The smallest cam you cam find that will deliver the results you are after is almost always the best.
cheers
