Hi All,
I have a niggling issue with my vy v6 with the power steering at low speed. If i turn the wheel it shudders and makes a horrid groaning sound while shuddering.
Ive read of a fix on here after doing some searching but i didnt find any details of the fix.
Could someone please explain what this fix is so when i take it to get my car serviced i can explain in to them so i then have a perfect working car?
Cheers
Sean

The fix (for auto versions only) was the fitment of a modified high pressure power steering hose to remove the pulsing.

Well i got a auto so this must be my problem, should i take this back to holden or will any mechanic with have a brain be able to help.
What actually causes this issue?

Any mechanic can fit it, but I'd recommend you obtain the genuine modified hose, not an aftermarket one, which is likely to be the same as your old one. The major difference is that both manual and auto versions came out with a short hose, whereas the modified one is much longer, has more metal piping, and is fixed into a different area. Whatever the reason, this seems to fix it!
I had the same problem mate, admittedly mine's a V8 but they replaced the same hose, but it's started doing it again :vpo:

Mine does the same. Asked the service agent to check, and was told it was normal. Didn't do it when I purchased it though.....Mind you, I don't think our local Holden dealer has anyone over the age of 22 working there.

Fact is that they do not appear to have the technical resources to fix the problem. They have replaced my power steering reservoir, rack, pump, fitted the modified hose, place an additive in the fluid and it is still playing up. My vehicle did not have the problem from new, it has developed the problem !

My Vy had the same problem and Holden couldn't fix it , the new hose they fitted didn't make any difference hardly. I tried different PS fluid to no avail. I sold the car and had no more problem.:)

When I had my oil pan leak fixed on my GTO they dropped the steering rack with the engine cradle which resulted in lots of air being introduced into the P/S. Took several days for the air to work it's way out as I only drive about 12 miles/day. Steering shuddered for several days and then stopped when the air worked it's way out, has not done it since.
If you just had this work performed you may want to give it a few days to see if it stops doing it.
Also, if the shudder only happens at around 15-30mph during light braking or turning it could be the tires or brake roters. I had a heck of a time on my Camaro several yrs ago. Replaced the power steering pump and hoses and the steering wheel would continue to chuggle back and forth under light pressure and sometimes in a straight line. Never did it during parking manuevers though. The chuggle went away when I rotated the tires, it was in the belts I suppose. Car never shook at highway speeds either. My Honda Odyssey just exhibited the same problem after a tire rotation. You would think the car would shake like hell at highway speed but it doesn't. Car can be tracking straight with no "seat or dash shakes" and the steering wheel is sawing back and forth on it's own at around 25mph.

In quite a number of cases, the shudder is also related to tyre brand and/or the front end alignment's effect on the tyres wear patterns.

Mine shuddered as I drove it out of the dealership and new new rims and tyres and wheel alignments nor new shocks or springs did nothing to correct the issue. I couldn't get it to balance properly either. 3 sets of wheels and tyres and lots of arguing with GM before I bit the bullet and sold it.
cheers

We're talking around 100,000 plus V6 auto vehicles here, and anything with such a large number of potential problem cars will have the odd hard luck story unfortunately. Law of averages at work.

I can assure you they are not "hard luck stories" or "law of avareages at work". The power steering shudder problem is prodominate enough for Holden offer re-engineered components in an attempt to try and resolve the issue. I have had every BS story at a dealer service level as to why the power steering shudders. The "stories" are the dealer service depts ducking and weaving around a hot potato. If anyone is having this problem, pm me, and i am sure i can save you alot of heart ache and time to obtaining a satisfactory out come.

You can believe what you want, including re-engineered components (cough, not!), but the fact is ANYTHING as high volume as a Commodore will have any issues more exposed, due to sheer numbers. One single fault on a Citroen would actually be just as common!
That, my friend, is the law of averages at work. More volume=more exposure ..:teach:

I guess i am just so lucky the "law of averages" did not have any substance in court........ but not being able to resolve a faulty product did.:goodjob:

Did you go straight to Slater and Gordon?
We all know how they just LOVE any opportunity to take on a big company with a few dollars potentially spare... :spew:
