Hey guys and girls,

Am looking at converting my ute to a manual, as the shift kitted automatic just isn't doing it for me anymore... I have a 02 VU SS ute, and want to know what's involved, what I'm lookin at cost wise, and what parts I need. Pretty generic question but am just curious. Would be easier to sell my ute, but I'm turning it into a one off so there's no chance of that happening

Any help is appreciated, cheers in advance

I looked into doing a manual conversion when I had a VX Commodore S.

Once you wiegh up all the costs, it does turn out to be a LOT cheaper and a LOT easier to sell the car and buy a manual version.

Depends on what the current car is

if it is in any way common, sell and buy another

if special, like mine was, go for the conversion

i spent around $5500 ... but i still gotta do the diff gears so looking at $7k all up...

Fark thats alot

This has been asked a few times ... the most cost effective way (if there is such a thing) to go about it is to find someone with a manual that wants an auto and do a straight swap.

That way you're technically only up for labour to swap the stuff over.

To try and do it solo involves a lot of work + an assload of parts. To list a few:

Wiring looms.
Gearbox
Pedal box.
cross members.
PCM swap (for shift point cals etc)

Just to list a few ...

id say go for it mate im going the other way i brought a wiring loom for 270 cross member and mounts are around 100 dollars and well as for the pcm you have to get them to retune it anyway all the do is flash a manual tune into your pcm and tune away. I have heard manuals are more expensive to do then autos but pft go for gold i say. I d say for every 3 manual conversions there would be one auto so get a price in mind for the auto and stick with it put it on ebay for 3g god luck mate

Cheers guys

The main reason I don't want to ditch it is because I've got a VZ GTO front end and two front fenders with vz flutes sitting here in primer waiting to be fitted... am waiting a bit further down the track to do that... just wanna get over this hurdle first, then install a cam/springs/otrcai and maftune.

maftune? maffless you mean anyways well you can cancel the cash out for a tune to change to a manual if your going cam because it has to be done anyway are you going to change the diff gears?

Mate been there done that - unless you have sentimental ties to the car, don't bother. If you want a manual, trade itin on one. It's alot less painful.

Look for a thread started by Jen3 with a rundown on parts required, and another thread started by myself with some information on modifying the wiring loom.

I did a manual conversion a few months ago, albeit on a VT V6.

Parts required:

Manual trans
Flywheel
Clutch & Pressure plates
Crossmember
Clutch Pedal (and brake pedal due to different size...or cut the auto one :p)
Clutch master & slave cylinders & reservoir
Manual Wiring Loom
Manual PCM
Shifter & linkage
Tailshaft (if it is different length)
Bolts for all those parts
Spigot bush/bearing
Dowel pins

That's all I can think of right now
