It appears the race will not be affected by rain. Will the 1991 race record of 6hr 19min be beaten this year for the fastest Bathurst 1000 race?

Will the 2003 lap record of 2min 6.8 seconds be beaten?

Lowndes, Whincup top practice

October 09, 2008 FORD pair Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup got their history-making mission off to an ideal start, topping the practice charts at the Bathurst 1000.

The Triple Eight Racing duo clocked 2 minutes 07.5975 seconds around the iconic 6.2km circuit, almost two tenths of a second quicker than the all-Kiwi Holden pairing of Jason Richards and Greg Murphy.

Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards finished third, more than half a second off the pace.

Reigning series champion and current standings leader Garth Tander, who is partnering five-time Bathurst champion Mark Skaife at the Holden Racing Team, was tenth fastest.

Weel injured in horror crash

By staff writers
October 10, 2008

V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel provided the first scare of the Bathurst 1000 weekend after losing control of his car before being t-boned on the track.

He is however expected to make a lucky escape and be cleared of any serious injury following the heavy accident near the McPhillamey Park area of the Mount Panorama circuit.

Weel, 29, had to be extracted from his V8 Supercar after Team Kiwi Racing driver Chris Pither clipped the rear drivers’ side door and left him with lower back pain.

He was airlifted to a nearby hospital for precautionary tests.

Pither walked away unhurt. Weel was fully conscious throughout the extrication and talking to the medical team. The lower back pain meant the medical team decided to airlift the PWR driver.

Both cars have been withdrawn from the weekend due to the extensive damage.

Holy crap that looked worse than last years incident which claimed young Mark Porters life.

That was scary. A couple of cars just missed Weel only seconds before. I winced as Weel looked like a sitting duck on a fast and blind section of the track. Pither looks like he was on a different line (racing line) possibly chasing the car in front and did not slow down until it was too late......there was smoke pouring of the tyres of the TKR car just before the accident.

Good to hear Weel and Pither are OK. I would go and buy a lottery ticket if I was either of those boys....lucky boys.

I agree, he was going full tilt until the last few seconds, he should have seen the flags much sooner, obviously not paying attention.

Glad to hear Paul Weel is OK, if Pither was a couple of metres further over Weel would have been a goner......

id be interested to know if they were single or double waved yellow flags, in this case i beleive that double waved flags should have been shown. jones only missed him by a few inches and he was so close to weel that the yellows wernt even out at all when he arrived, at that speed and on a different line im not suprised at the crash, even so, with one flag out you would think he would of backed off a touch, but in 4th gear flat stick with 100m visability and if he was planing to let the car run out to the right comming out of the previous left hander to the full right of the track he probably couldnt stop in time yellows out or not, it looks like to me on the video when he has the brakes locked up he is turning to the left but with locked up fronts it wasnt going to steer anyway, either that or he saw the yellow and thought not much of it, not expecting to see a car blocking 2/3rds of the track. at least no one was really hurt.

when interviewed he "claimed" he saw the yellow but didn't have time to react.
From my armchair view he didn't back off at all until too late and therefoe should be heavily penalised

True and True the cars are strong but the last two fatalities in supercars have been side impacts. The last place you want to get hit in one of these cars is in the side. That was a big impact and if that we closer to the front of the car i don't think he would have been so lucky.

Would be good to know, as someone said if their were double yellows. That is a fast blind corner and Weel was sitting on the race line/corner exit. Pither was on a flyer as well. Was Jones??

V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel is expected to be cleared of any serious injury following a heavy accident during practice at the Bathurst 1000 Friday.

Weel, 29, had to be extracted from his PWR Holden after a collision with Team Kiwi Racing driver Chris Pither.

Pither walked away, while Weel is experiencing some lower back pain and has been airlifted to Nepean Hospital as a precaution.

Pither and Weel will take no further part in the weekend though, with both cars suffering extreme damage.

The accident occurred near the McPhillamy Park area of the circuit, when Weel made contact with a safety barrier and slid sideways onto the track and Pither slammed into the driver's side door.

Ford's Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes clocked the fastest time in the session ahead of Friday afternoon's qualifying.

The pair were also fastest in Thursday's session and remain on track to complete an historic hat-trick of Bathurst titles.

Stone Brothers Racing's James Courtney and David Besnard were second fastest, followed by all-Kiwi Holden pair Jason Richards and Greg Murphy.

Veteran V8 Supercar driver Paul Radisich has suffered a broken right ankle but has otherwise been given a strong preliminary medical check following a one-car accident at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 today.

The New Zealander was taking part in final practice for tomorrow’s race when he ran into a sand trap and collided heavily with a safety barrier on top of the mountain.

He has a severely fractured right ankle but medical staff believe he has otherwise suffered no injuries. He was being fully assessed at the one-site medical centre.

It is unknown whether the HSV Dealer Team car can be repaired in time for this afternoon’s Top Ten Shootout or for tomorrow’s race.

A further update on Radisich and the car will be provided later in the day.

Paul Radisich has crashed his HSV Dealer Team Commodore during this morning’s practice for the Bathurst 1000.

Radisich arrived at McPhillamy Park at speed after the throttle appeared to jam on the #15 Commodore that he was planning to share with Rick Kelly in tomorrow’s Great Race.

The 46-year-old Kiwi driver then speared across a sandtrap out of control and hit a concrete wall, severely damaging the front and driver’s side of his Commodore.

Radisich was extracted from the car and taken to the medical centre at the track and then airlifted to Orange Base Hospital.

Kelly told BigPond Sport that he had spoken with his teammate, and that apart from nursing a broken right ankle, he was okay.

“We just went down to the medical centre and he is conscious. He is obviously extremely sore; the impact was quite heavy and he has a bit of a sore right ankle. They think it could be broken, but we will know more in an hour or so,” he said straight after the incident.

Kelly said he didn’t know whether the badly damaged #15 Commodore would be repaired in time for this afternoon’s top 10 shootout. Kelly qualified the car sixth yesterday.

It was Radisch’s second big accident at Mount Panorama after he hit a wall at the Chase in 2006 driving a Team Kiwi Racing Commodore.

He smashed his left ankle in that incident and later told the Sydney Morning Herald that had it been his right ankle he wouldn’t be able to continue racing.

Earlier in the practice session Mark Noske hit a wall after losing control of his Sprint Gas #51 Commodore coming on to Mountain Straight when his steering wheel came off in his hands.

Team manager, Jeff Grech, told BigPond Sport that the incident was caused by “human mishap”.

“It is such a minor thing that may have got overlooked. It’s one of those things. At this place a minor mishap catches you out because it is such a big event,” he said.

“It didn’t break. The steering wheel has been off (the car) at some stage and there is a clip and that didn’t engage (when it was put back on) and that is why the steering wheel has come off.

“It’s just one of those things that never happens in a million years, but they always seem to happen at Bathurst.

“The car is repairable, it hasn’t hit big. My biggest focus at the moment is to try to convince the drivers that it won’t happen again and to get their confidence back in the car.”

Meanwhile, the sister Sprint Gas Commodore of Jason Richards and Greg Murphy topped the timesheets with a 2min 06.9076sec lap ahead of the #1 HRT Commodore of Garth Tander and Mark Skaife (2:07.1577) and the #888 TeamVodafone Falcon of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes (2:07.2057).

The top 10 shootout is scheduled to start at 3:40pm today.

V8 Supercar driver Paul Weel has been given the medical all-clear after CT scans showed no major damage following an accident during the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama today.

Weels’ father and team owner Kees Weel said that his son would be in hospital for a few days with some bruising and a cracked rib but otherwise was fine.

“Paul is not about to run around the block but he’s fine and looking forward to getting back with the team for Indy in a couple of weeks time,” Weel Snr said of the popular V8 Supercar driver.

“He is totally with us and complaining already so that means he’s back to normal. He will be out of hospital in the next couple of days a little sore and sorry but otherwise all good.”

Kees Weel was absolutely glowing in his praise of the New South Wales Ambulance and Team Medical Australia that were on the scene in minutes and had his son at the Philips/Sonosite Medical Centre in good time.

“They were absolutely incredible,” he said.

“From the moment of the accident and when I arrived at the medical centre their professionalism and precision was simply outstanding. Those guys deserve all the praise they can get, they are brilliant.”

He thanked all of those people who had inquired about Paul.

“The response has been humbling and we thank everybody involved,” he said.

“Paul is going to be recovering for a few days so it will be difficult to get back to everybody but your good wishes have been really appreciated.

“The main thing is that Paul is absolutely fine.”

UPDATED KELLY TO RACE TOM'W!

http://www.v8supercars.com.au/content/images/hero_news_folders/october_08/rick_autobarn/files/18204/Rick-Autobarn.jpg

Two-time Bathurst Champion Rick Kelly has been thrown a lifeline to race in tomorrow’s 1000 kay Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Kelly was booked to pilot the #15 HSV Dealer Team Commodore with Paul Radisich, but the team withdrew that car from the race following an accident in practice this morning with Radisich at the wheel.

Stewards have sanctioned Kelly, who won Bathurst in 2003 and 2004 with Greg Murphy, to move across to the #16 Autobarn Commodore for the Great Race with team mate Paul Dumbrell, who qualified the car eighth quickest yesterday.

Dumbrell’s original co-driver, David Reynolds, has been ill this weekend with a viral infection and has been on a saline drip and will not take part in tomorrow’s race.

The withdrawal of the #15 car means that the WOW Racing entry has been handed a second chance to participate in the Top 10 Shootout this afternoon, after qualifying 11th yesterday.

HSV Dealer Team’s Andrew Wenzel said Radisich had suffered injuries to both of his ankles during the accident, along with neck soreness.

“Paul’s condition includes one broken ankle (the right one) in two places,” he said.

Wenzel said it was not yet known whether an operation on Radisich’s ankle would take place at the Orange Base Hospital, where he is currently located, or in Sydney.

He confirmed the throttle had stuck while Radisich was approaching McPhillamy Park and said the car sustained damage including a twisted roll cage, bent front rail and a damaged pedal box.

“It’s too big a job to fix here and hopefully we’ll have the (#16 Commodore) chassis on its way to Melbourne by the end.”

Wenzel said the four chassis specialists had remained in Melbourne, where the team is based, this weekend.

The team members have a frantic job to rebuild the Commodore in time for the next round, the Gold Coast Indy, at Surfers Paradise in two weeks.

Great news for Rick.
I assume this has only been allowed to occur due to the other driver being unwell?
Can anybody confirm if this is the case.
cheers

Christ it's taken Paul til now to probally get over his broken ankle and sternum and still had a bit of troble with it and now this happens....broke the right one this time and dis-located his previously broken left..

Been some serious carnage this year in the main catergory and support races..certainly hope everyone gets through ok...should be a great day Sunday!!

According to Tander pole at Bathurst is no big deal - he said after last year's top ten shoot-out that "it's all fluff'.

"Two-time Bathurst Champion Rick Kelly has been thrown a lifeline to race in tomorrow’s 1000 kay Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Dumbrell’s original co-driver, David Reynolds, has been ill this weekend with a viral infection and has been on a saline drip and will not take part in tomorrow’s race."

So who was going to be his original replacement driver if Prick Kelly had not stolen his ride?

Congratulations to G Tander for winning pole position. When was the last time a pole position winner won the race? Let's see if 888 can win from position 4, 6 and now 5 :D

Tander's car was in Race trim for the top 10 shootout so I think they have a good chance if that is the sort of speed and balance they can sustain throughout the race. I would love to see Tander win again..he's a true pro and a good bloke too. Skaife, well good on him if he can get closer to PB's mountain record and the PB trophy, may even see some emotion from him. I just wanna see Holden get on top.

Sort of like I am going to miss a fair bit of the fun bits of the race, will see about the last hour when most (in regards to positions) of the hard yards will have been sorted out.

Will only get to see replays of pit stops, and the strategy of when people refuel.

First Bathurst in 14 years that I will not either be there or watch the whole thing.

Noticed at the end of the race there were only about 7 DNF's, out of a field of 26 (I think). Bathurst Race cars definantly seem to be getting a lot more reliable than say back in the Group A days. Very few engine blow ups, maybe from using the same basic engine design since 1993 well sorted by now i dare say. Tyres seemed to be terrible, will be interesting to see the wash up of that.

As for the broadcast, I can't believe how little track time was shown, most of the time was spent showing the pits, woeful I thought. Not even a lap with Driver X showing the telemetry like how C10 used to do.

Cheers, Matthew

Will Skaife ever get his name on the Peter Brock trophy?

Maybe if he buys a replica and gets it engraved there himself. Comparing Skaife to Tander, Tander moves the car up the field, Skaife gets in and stagnates, goes backwards through the field or goes off/crashes. He didn't do well at Phillip Island either. It's not the car as Tander gets the results in his stints in the same car. Skaife's a driver who is back in the pack in relative terms to the other drivers in V8SC driving a car capable of winning. His star is fading and calls for him to give someone else the drive are not without foundation. If they want two of the best drivers in both their cars, which are capable of winning races, then Skaife needs to make room and stick to running the team.

Reckon having bent steering from getting an unneeded nudge on the first lap from the race winners might not have helped Murph's cause... making it an even better result for him.

And the nudge came from Lowndes....... Hard to judge the overall effect, as the pace car tends to even things up a bit. Lowndes & Whincup drove a very good race & the car couldn't be faulted.

Lowndes-Whincup win Bathurst

October 12, 2008

FORD pair Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup claimed an historic Bathurst 1000 hat-trick but second-placed Greg Murphy was "pissed" that Lowndes got away with bumping him on lap one.

Lowndes, 34, and Whincup, 25, became the first men in 24 years to win three straight titles at Mount Panorama with a near-flawless drive.

The Triple Eight Racing duo equalled the all-time record for successive triumphs, joining motorsport legends Peter Brock, Jim Richards and Larry Perkins on three.

For Lowndes, it was a chance to join his mentor, the late Brock, in the history books.

"You couldn't dream of it. To create a piece of modern history is awesome," said Lowndes, who once again showed nerves of steel to hold off the challengers towards the end.

"How good was Lowndesy in that last stint? He just nails it every time. He's unbelievable," added Whincup, who has moved into the V8 Supercar championship lead with four rounds to go.

"I'm not a greedy person but I'll take it every time."

New Zealand pairing Murphy and Jason Richards pulled off an incredible second spot with Murphy passing the Ford of Steven Richards with just a handful of laps remaining.

But Murphy wasn't happy with the opening-lap contact, where Lowndes appeared to veer into his side and the four-time Bathurst champion battled steering problems as a result.

"He's got away with knocking us up and nothing has been done about it as usual," said Murphy.

"I was a bit pissed to be honest. It hampered our race big time."

Aside from that and a heap of safety-car interventions late on, it was plain sailing for the champions, taking the lead from James Courtney and David Besnard of Ford after the first pit stop on lap 34 and never looking back.

Lowndes also moved to equal fifth on the all-time list with four Bathurst wins, behind Brock (9), Richards (7), Perkins (6) and modern rival Mark Skaife (5) - his first victory coming in 1996, 10 years before his second.

Steven Richards and Mark Winterbottom eventually slipped another spot to fourth, with Courtney and Besnard sneaking through for a place on the podium.

Five-time winner Skaife and his V8 Supercar champion teammate Garth Tander had a horror day for the Holden Racing Team.

Tander got off to a disastrous start when the clutch slipped, leaving him stranded on the starting line as he dropped from pole position to last by the first corner.

To make matters worse, Tander was given a 10-second penalty for jumping the start as the car propped forward in the chaos.

"I got a penalty for apparently getting too good a start - I was last into the first corner!" Tander said.

The day would not get any better for Holden's flagship outfit as on lap 102 of 161 Skaife hit the wall trying to fend off Lowndes, who was attempting to lap him.

Skaife hit the wall again a few laps later as he battled steering problems and the pair finished 12th in the end.

Brock achieved the Bathurst hat-trick twice, first with Jim Richards from 1978-80 and then again from 1982-84 with Perkins.

It hadn't been achieved since.

Horror day for Holden

October 12, 2008

THERE was an awful sense of deja vu for Holden teammates Garth Tander and Mark Skaife when Tander got off to a disastrous start in the Bathurst 1000.
The clutch slipped on the Holden Racing Team Commodore leaving Tander stranded on the line, dropping from pole position to last by the first corner.

To make matters worse, Tander was given a 10-second penalty for jumping the start as the car propped forward in the chaos.

The day would not get any better for the flagship outfit as on lap 102 of 161 Skaife hit the wall trying to fend off eventual winner Craig Lowndes, who was attempting to lap him.

Skaife then hit the wall again a few laps later as he battled steering problems and the pair finished 12th in the end.

In 2006, Skaife was behind the wheel when clutch problems left him rooted to the start line.

On that occasion he limped around Mount Panorama in an attempt to get back to the pits but was shunted by an unsighted Jack Perkins, marking the end of his day before he'd completed a lap.

"I thought it was 2006 revisited for a minute but the clutch came back. In 2006 the clutch just kept on slipping," said Skaife, a five-time Bathurst winner.

V8 Supercar champion Tander thought the penalty was a little harsh.

"Basically my clutch just ran out," he said.

"I could feel it going so I tried to go soft and the car just propped forward. I got a penalty for apparently getting too good a start - I was last into the first corner!"

Reckon having bent steering from getting an unneeded nudge on the first lap from the race winners might not have helped Murph's cause... making it an even better result for him.

So you don't think Murphy tried to push Lowndes onto the grass when he was coming up alongside? Murphy had a bit of space to his left. I think Lowndes' car got a little light over the crest and with 2 wheels on the dirt, which exaggerated his move back to the left. Murphy got back what he dished out.
I will commend Murphy for not taking S Richards out towards the end at turn 2. The exit from turn 2 was looking like a repeat of the incident of the one with Ambrose a few years back.
I'm sure the stewards left that score at one all on the track after a look

Murph couldn't go any further left without hitting Courtney IMHO there ws only a foot in it and Murph ended up touching him after getting bumped in the B piller by Lowndes. I watched a replay in super slow about 6 times and you could see all the tyre scrub on Murphs doors.

cheers

I agree, i wouldn't want scaife in my car if you want to win.
Scaife need to be a B grade driver now. Tander managed to get it back up in the top 10, Scaife gets in and starts dropping time, complains about no front end grip. Tander gets back in and does good times again. Scaife gets back in and crashes

he was good but not anymore.

I cheered when CH7 let us have 6 uninterrupted laps in a row, then went straight back swearing and cursing when 3 laps later another ad break. Sods. They were the same ads almost every break and Koch did get very irritating. Tom Williams should be buried somewhere and never be allowed on a sporting coverage or any tv. CH7 this year your coverage was very piss poor and you and your excessive ad breaks etc spoilt my most important day of the year. shame on you 7. It could be worse,CH9 could have the broadcast rights and they could have Ray Warren , Gus Gould and Matty Johns doing the commentary.

Was it just me or were the pitstops incredibly slow and boring???

Pit stops used to be lightning fast (even when allowing for the full tanks of fuel), but todays were all yawn material!

I think they mentioned something about slowing down the rate at which the fuel is pumped into the car to give the drivers more time to get in and set up safely.

Murphy did well to come back to 2nd place. Good on him.
Lowndes did do well. Much as I would have liked a Holden to win. Brocky would be proud of Lowndes for today's effort and the last two years. :D
I was there today, haven't been to Bathurst since I was a kid. I absolutely loved it. I will be going back next year for sure. It's great I can stand amongst Ford fans with my Holden flag, T-shirt and cap and not have anyone have a go at me. Great atmosphere.

Thank God for the last few laps, either there should be a mandatory safety car with 20 laps to go or they turn the sprinklers on! Well done to 888, was a pity Murph couldn't get by Richo a few laps earlier. Would've thought Dunlop would be on top of those tyres by now.

As was said before, Murph couldn't get further left. Watching the reply Lowndes had plenty of room on the track next to Murphy. Lowndes stuffed up and dropped a wheel on the grass without any other reason besides trying to pass and then hits murph and results in a pass. BY the letter of the law, he has made a gain unlawfully and should have been punished. But again it's racing and it's now done.

http://www.v8supercars.com.au/content/images/hero_news_folders/october_08/threepeat/files/18216/Threepeat.jpg

The question everyone was asking before the start of this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was: can anyone stop TeamVodafone’s Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup from claiming their third Great Race victory in a row?

After just over six hours of racing the answer to that question was a firm ‘no’, as the pair remain the only men to ever get their hands on the Peter Brock Memorial trophy.

Whincup took the lead of the 161-lap race after swapping with Lowndes at the team’s first pit stop and the pair never really looked like losing the race from that point on.

It was superior pace and fuel economy that saw the #888 Falcon dominate the race for Ford.

“Three years in a row; I couldn’t believe it. It’s amazing; the car has been fantastic all weekend,” Lowndes said about the hattrick.

“You couldn’t dream of it.”

Whincup said winning the Great Race “means everything” to him.

“To go three in a row; I just don’t know how to explain it… to win this race three times in a row is pretty special; I feel greedy in a way,” he said.

“The team gave us an awesome car and we had Lowndesy to bring it home…“

He indicated that the victory would help ease the pain of losing last month’s L&H 500 at Phillip Island after being in a winning position.

“I was quite shattered after Phillip Island… to throw it away with 10 laps to go was disappointing but this certainly makes up for that,” he said.

The three-peat emulates the Holden hattricks of Peter Brock and Larry Perkins (1982-1984) and Peter Brock and Jim Richards (1978-1980).

Meanwhile, Sprint Gas Racing’s Greg Murphy and Jason Richards drove a brilliant race to charge to second place.

It was the second year in a row that they were the best Holden combination, after finishing fourth behind the all-Ford podium at last year’s Great Race.

Murph chased down Steve Richards – who was sharing the #6 FPR Falcon with Mark Winterbottom – in the dying laps and passed the Castrol Falcon driver on lap 157.

The Kiwi set his fastest time on lap 159 as he chased the Triple Eight Falcon, but unfortunately he ran out of laps.

Ford fans held their collective breaths on lap 157 when the Bottle-O Commodore of Tony D’Alberto smacked the wall at Griffins Bend, which could have brought out a safety car and allowed Murphy to close the three-second gap to Lowndes, but the green Holden was able to rejoin the race under its own steam.

However, even had a safety car been deployed Murph may not of had the pace to pass Lowndes as he was struggling with both engine dramas and a lack of fuel in the last two laps, which forced him to switch to his reserve tanks and nurse the #3 Commodore home.

The Sprint Gas team fought back from a near disaster on the opening lap when Murphy and Lowndes collided. The incident bent the steering of the #3 Commodore and forced Murph in for an unscheduled early pit stop.

“I was a bit pissed about the incident at the start of the race to be honest; it damaged the car. We ran with a bent steering arm for 161 laps,” Murphy said.

“I have seen the vision of it and I am not overly stoked with it, but that’s the way it goes.”

Jeld-Wen Falcon drivers James Courtney and David Besnard finished third after Courtney drove a fantastic final half of the race, fighting back from an error of judgement by Besnard early in the race.

Besnard misdiagnosed delaminating tyres as a broken anti-roll bar, which saw the team make what turned out to be unnecessary changes to the setup of the #4 Falcon.

Before that error Courtney had been making the early running in the race and seemed to have the pace to match the Triple Eight Falcon.

Courtney took third place from Steven Richards – who appeared to be struggling with fading rear tyres – on lap 158.

The Jeld-Wen Falcon driver set the fastest time of the race of 2min 09.2775sec on lap 139.

It was the third year in a row that Courtney and Besnard have been on the podium after the pair finished second in 2007 and third in 2006.

Pole-sitter and Championship-leader going into the Bathurst 1000, Garth Tander, fluffed the start of the race when his clutch failed in the #1 Holden Racing Team Commodore off the line and was lucky not to get hit by the ensuing field (see separate story).

He and teammate Mark Skaife tried hard to fight back during the race, but Skaife clouted the wall on lap 102 at Forrest’s Elbow, ending any chance the pair had of race victory and surrendering Tander’s Championship lead (see separate article).

Tander has slipped to third in the Championship, with Whincup snatching the lead. Winterbottom has moved into second.

The first half of the race was relatively incident free with no safety cars in the opening 73 laps; however, there were eight in the second half of the race.

A number of teams also struggled throughout the day with delaminating tyres.

Fourth home was the #6 FPR Falcon, followed by WOW Racing’s Brad Jones and Max Wilson, Jim Beam Racing’s Will Davison and Steve Johnson, FPR’s Luke Youlden and Dean Canto, Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Jack Perkins and Nathan Pretty, Fujitsu Racing’s Jason Bright and Adam Macrow and Glenford’s Racing’s Fabian Coulthard and Alex Davison.

The victory was Lowndes’ fourth, which sees him join Murphy and Allan Moffat, who also have four Great Race trophies on their mantelpieces.

The Ford victory is also the first time that the Blue Oval has won three Bathurst 1000s in a row since the 1960s.

The next round of the Championship is at Surfers Paradise in two weeks.

yes, hes been going downhill for a couple of years, more so this year.

He was a great driver, he doesn't have it anymore. Tander would have been better off if Scaife was in the 2nd car.

It wasn't just this race, before the race started I thought why is Scaife in with Tander that will ruin his race, it did.

With a younger driver Tander might have got on the podium, even after the start stuff up

Well Done 888, they had one hell of a car yesterday, not a thing wrong.
Channel 7 cverage was below average, crap incar camera work, picture and sound breaking up. Bad camera work all of a sudden the camera would end up in the bushes when shooting.

Is it just me or am i missing something. I remember when you slip stream someone that you actually catch up to them and can usually pull out and overtake or at least get up to the B pillar. I noticed yesterday that on conrod no matter how much slip streaming occurred the car behind never even got close to the rear of the car in front nor get up along side. Time for a few changes me thinks that was the best part of the best parts of bathurst, seeing a car close up real close, pull out and either attempt an overtake or overtake at the end of the straight.

Even in the Carrera Cup prior to the big race, (was it Craig Baird trying to get past James Moffat?), on the last lap, Baird had a much better entrance onto Conrod, and I thought "beauty, now we'll see a slip stream effect", but no! ... He sat behind, right up the guy in front's arse, but when he pulled out, he had nothing.

Very disappointing.

What wasn't disappointing were the lap times the porsche's were doing.

As was said before, Murph couldn't get further left. Watching the replay Lowndes had plenty of room on the track next to Murphy. Lowndes stuffed up and dropped a wheel on the grass without any other reason besides trying to pass and then hits murph and results in a pass. BY the letter of the law, he has made a gain unlawfully and should have been punished. But again it's racing and it's now done.

Go back to the 1st lap replay shown around lap 6 which shows as they just come over the crest, Lowndes is alongside and it shows Murphy moving right, squeezing Lowndes onto the grass. At this point he has plenty of room to his left. Combine that with Lowndes' car getting a little light over the crest with 2 wheels on the grass and it gets loose. Murphy was covering himself in the brief interview claiming Lowndes wasn't even on the grass. The big dust clouds from the right side of 888 say otherwise. He loosened 888 up and it moved around more as a result. Lowndes kept the same line from the track edge - heading inwards slightly and under brakes. He didn't swerve at Murphy after he got all 4 wheels back on the blacktop - meaning he didn't turn further left, but was still moving towards the left as he was keeping it straight under brakes. At this point 888 was about half a car length ahead, so he already got past, but being on the inside, Lowndes was off the racing line and Murphy got back ahead into turn 2. If Murphy didn't play games over the crest, he would have dropped a spot and his steering would have been OK. He dished it out and it came back at him. The stewards saw that and let both incidents go.

And the nudge came from Lowndes....... Hard to judge the overall effect, as the pace car tends to even things up a bit. Lowndes & Whincup drove a very good race & the car couldn't be faulted.

Lowndes was just comming back on the track after murphy thought he would push lowndes on to the grass the first contact came from murphy. murphy is a big sook it ok for him to bash and crash but when he causes all the problems and he comes out second best he has a cry:bawl:

Why is it that every time Murphy does something meritorious the Murphy-bashers from FF have to come on here and yap on with their usual one-eyed blubbering.
Murphy copped an undeserved biff from Lowndes on lap 1, but lap 1 is pretty hectic, and whilst I thought it was both avoidable and un-necessary, under the circumstances, Lowndes got away with it.
Murphy drove a great race despite the damaged steering, but Lowndes and Whincup were the class act on the day and deserved the win.
A bit of objectivity goes a long way...

Murphy likes to dish it out but is a sook when he is on the receiving end. It was a racing incident so Murphy and everybody else should get over it.

Two hours after the race Murphy came up to the Goldfields Lodge on Conrod Straight where I was staying and spent 45 minutes with the group I was with. Amongst a group of holden supporters he had plenty of opportunity to bag Lowndes or have a "sook". He did neither and quite the opposite he was rapped with his podium placing and was fizzing. He was a little disappointed his race was affected by the incident but certainly didn't dwell on it. He felt he could have closed in on Lowndes if the race had been longer but was happy with the result in context of his season to date. His chief concern was the tire failures which affected a lot of teams. But hey don't let a facts get in the way of the anti Murph sentiment from some of you expert race drivers.

He did bag Lowndes on the channel 7 interview after he got out the car after his first driving stint. Call Craig a lair cause he said he saw the footage and Craig was not on the grass like he claimed to be. But clearly in the re-play Craig was pushed out whit 2 wheels out on the grass. And then had a sook there was no penelty given gee that is the pot calling the kettle black after what he has gotten away with in the past.

There's a story on the V8 Supercar website where he's whining about dunlop making crap tyres for bathurst, whereas the manufacturer and the other drivers concede that it's the track and ripple strips that are carving up the rubber. Then he was quick to lay the blame into Lowndes for the 1st lap incident, to which you could honestly say was a racing incident.

The bloke seems to whinge 1st and think 2nd. Perhaps his old man is a pom?

He would have served him up i reckon!! WOULD HAVE BEEN SICK TO WATCH!!!!! :flipoff:

Sort it out on the track boys!!! 9 days till Indy!!!! yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeooooow!!!!!!!

There's a story on the V8 Supercar website where he's whining about dunlop making crap tyres for bathurst, whereas the manufacturer and the other drivers concede that it's the track and ripple strips that are carving up the rubber.
Dunlop is blaming the track but did you have a look at the ripple strips - I did.
Ask Ford team man Dick Johnson what he thinks of the dunlop tires.

FORD rising star Michael Patrizi was allegedly violently attacked by a sponsor of his team in a shocking aftermath to Sunday's Bathurst 1000.

Probably the sponsor had a belly full of grog and thought he could do better

Perhaps he's from AFF....

lol... I seem to fondly remember a particular grumpyolb getting quite a few members in a huff after the Murphy v Ambrose incident a few years ago. What a read that was!

Do you know what racing room is? You can't just veer over on someone even though the steering is straight but the car isn't making it all ok... Murphy doesn't need to back off to "let" Lowndes through. Lowndes was making the pass as you have explained, so it is up to him to make the pass cleanly. Murphy had all the right in the world to hold his line until he was passed. They didn't touch in the turn, they touched in the straight area so therefore the pass was not made as yet.

Holden Motorsport Manager Simon McNamara warns that the saying ‘what comes around goes around’ will ring true for Ford next year.

McNamara, along with the front-running Holden V8 Supercar teams, has been pushing for a parity review since the Queensland Raceway round of the Championship in July.

He says that the shoe will be on the other foot next year, because the FG Falcon to be introduced to the category next will have more drag than the VE Commodore.

“Trust me, next year when the Fords come out, honestly, because their next car’s got more drag than our current car, you watch the whingeing then,” he said.

McNamara said Sprint Gas Racing’s spot on the podium at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 last weekend did not mean there was parity between the VE and the current BF Falcon.

“Everyone goes on about ‘pole position, pole position’,” he said, referring to Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander getting pole at Bathurst.

“But it’s not so prevalent over one lap.

“If you’ve got a drag issue it becomes much more prevalent over consistent laps.”

McNamara said the #3 Greg Murphy/Jason Richards entry proved there is a parity issue even though it was the runner-up in last weekend’s Great Race.

“There’s no issue with the engine; they’re all the same because they have to be, but … there’s a clear drag problem,” he said.

Richards agreed there was disparity between the two marques.

“When you follow another car it’s pretty easy when you get a draught… of maybe of a Holden but you can’t get one off a Ford,” he said.

“As a driver it’s the most frustrating thing in the universe.”

McNamara will continue pushing for a parity change, even though there are only four rounds of the Championship remaining.

“We wanted it for here; we didn’t get it here, but we’ll keep asking the question because they just keep putting it on the backburner,” he said.

“It makes you wonder well, what are they trying to hide?

“Bahrain’s a fast, open aerodynamic circuit.

“We’ll keep fighting; we’ll never give up.”

VESA Technical Director Andy Bartley is due to present his review into whether the Falcons have an aerodynamic advantage over the Commodore at the next V8 Supercars Australia board meeting on October 22.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does everyone think of the parity issue that McNamara beleives needs to be looked at?

He states that the engines are all the same. I don't think the engines are the same, teams hp ouputs have always varied, sometimes up to 20hp. If he was worried about parity maybe they shoud be checking the engines outputs because i don't see what has changed from the 07 championship to the 08 series with regards to aero. They are the same front to rear from memory.

The Fords always seem to have more squirt in the hp department, especially at tracks like bathurst and sandown.

He also suggests that Ford will struggle in 09 because the VE has less drag when compared to the new FG racecar. How is that parity?? Maybe he should have kept that snippet of info to himself lol.

If it's true, you can bet on that.

When the Ford boys start losing they become bigger whingers than the Holden drivers........I remember the last time it happened and they penalised the Holdens, all the Ford drivers were whinging so loud :bawl:

It will be very interesting next year to see if the Ford drivers take their own medicine quietly......

Bring it on

Why was this not addressed during the off season between 2007 and 2008 why wait till half wait through the season. AFL teams cannot change their draft picks at round 11.

......

Why was this not addressed during the off season between 2007 and 2008 why wait till half wait through the season. AFL teams cannot change their draft picks at round 11.Because the criteria to trigger a parity review follows a set of specific requirements.
There is a parity "trigger" whereby they analyse the lap-times of the 10 fastest cars at each round.

"the technical parity calculation takes the average of 25 per cent of the fastest laps of the 10 fastest cars of each marque every round and converts them into an average.

For a parity adjustment, there needs to be a 0.1 second ‘trip’ at three consecutive rounds, or four from six."

Therefore, until the season is half over they cannot accumulate the necessary data to comply with the requirements of the rules...

McNamara mentioned that while Holdens got pole, it was more about lap consistancy. Why then was Murphy the fastest at the end of Bathurst?

It's probably a bit like footy... the speed and success of teams varies from year to year then in a couple of years someone else comes up and is the quickest. SBR a good example

Well, my son and I went to our first Bathurst and had a great time, we camped at the chase and spent 4 days having the best of fun. I actually got Skaife and Todd Kelly to sign my engine cover, Skaifee because he is my all time favorite and Todd because he is a fellow Maloo driver. we also got Larry perkins to sign my sons cap. Was a great weekend even though the result was not the best!

obviously I need to point it out to you as well.
where in my post that you quoted did I mention Murphy. A little hint,,,, I didn't. Your reading comprehension skills really need some work. maybe you and commomate can tutor each other.
if you want to debate the Murphy Lowndes incident, how about finding a post that talks about it and quote that, or even better, start your own effing thread.
ffs, some ford fans are so one eyed they can't even think straight.
and why are they quoting my post that DOES NOT mention Murph.
1)I qouted you for your one eyed view on forum bashing issues
then i clearly said ON TOPIC and made my opinion made, why make 2 replies

Umm, that's no reason to come over and hit the car next to you... Especially on the first lap of a 161 lap race.
well going thru the middle of the 2 front cars on cold tyres
is what you call "smart driving" is it?
was never going to pay off regardless, should be blessed he got the tap and not ran wide on cold tyres and ended up in the wall.

Well since the BA and VZ came into V8 racing and even now with the VE the racing has been very competitive and have had many teams and drivers mixing it up. I was getting very boring with M Scaife and hrt winning every race

some good racing with mixed results. Just a pity some one eyed supporters want their own brand to dominate, yet get all shirty if the other brand does.

I wouldn't blame him the number 7 doesn't seem to be a competitive car as well has being the worst sounding V8 supercar I have ever heard. Something to do with it running a different sort of crossover exhaust than the others.

Murph wasn't going through the middle he was in front and Lowndes was trying to come around him.

I bet the Ford guys wouldn't have been so rightous if as a result of the tap Murph put Courtney out of the race when he tapped him.
