Well after filling up my ls1 on a full tank of petrol the other day to notice after driving it from the servo it was idling rough with little or no power. So I pulled over on the side of the road and let the car run in park. I could hear metal pinging noises aka detonation (quite noticeable). I reckon the batch of fuel I have in the car has an RON in the 80's or even 70's (its pretty bad!!!)

I'm sure other guys have had the same problem so thought to start a thread. Beware of the service station on Ramsay Rd cnr Fairlight Street in Five Dock Sydney. It also is of a well named company.

Next question is how can I get rid of this sh*t. I have driven the car refilled it up on 98 RON and it was a bit better but not fantastic (put in 15L). I next put in Octane Booster which has helped even more. I have thought of siphoning the fuel out but this will take forever on a 70L tank. Draining the tank is a possibility but you have to take the tank and fuel pump out which I don't want to do. How much engine damage will I be doing until this fuel is out of the system. I'm not accelerating where possible to limit the detonation.

Thought they cleaned up the quality of petrol in the last year or two :vpo:. I guess not.

Any other ideas guys of how to fix the problem?

My advice would be to pump out all the fuel in your tank using your on board pump quite easy to do, just a matter of hooking a 1/4 flared hose to one rail & run to an empty drum or drums. Then bypass fuel pump relay with a suitable jumper.
Off course do not leave the vehicle unattended whilst doing so. Then try flushing through a small amount of fresh fuel following the empty. Then you should be right to go with a fill up of new fuel. Good idea to change your filter also.

Cheers

I had exactly the same thing a few months ago. But it turned out that one of my spark plug leads had chosen that exact moment to come loose. Glad I checked under the bonnet before fronting up to the servo owner to "demand satisfaction".

This is actually what it ended up being. So I guess the fuel was fine and I was just wasting my time, God damn it!:vpo:. Because the lead was not attached well to the spark plug it basically was still sparking but obviously because the arch length was much greater it was arching out to open air hence the noise. Only found this out after I drained 3 quarters of a tank of petrol and about 250kms of highway driving. Well did an oil change at the same time so at least I got that out of the way.

The problem happened exactly after I filled up. Just sheer coincidence. Just goes to show you can never assume and brush off a particular problem

Never assume that because a problem is similar it is the same problem. Lesson learned:doh:

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated
