Currently looking at getting a very cheap 2nd car in Melbourne. Has to be a pretty small manual car for around or preferable less than $2000 and learner legal as I need to teach the girlfriend to drive in it. The biggest thing I have noticed with this price range is that some cars although they have Rego they don't have a RWC. Is this similar to the pink slip in NSW that you need before registering your car every year?

If anyone has a cheap car or can explain the whole RWC and the costs involved that would be great, thanks.

You need a RWC when you go to vic roads to put the car in your name.. From memory last RWC check cost me bout 70/80 dollars plus whatever they find wrong.. then once passed you take it to vic roads with your papers and it all gets put in your name.. no biggy.. once you have it you don't need another one unless somethin unforseen happens.

The problem is that in that price range the reason many don't come with RWC is that the sellers know that there is a fair bit of expense involved in making them roadworthy. Some will negotiate it as part of the deal because they believe there is not much needed to get the RWC and the only reason they haven't got one is because they are only valid for a certain period of time (14 days or 1 month from memory) so if the car doesn't sell quickly they will be up for the cost of another one.

Depending on the sort of cars you are looking at some can be very expensive to repair. I'll preface this by saying I am only going on hearsay here so don't flame me people if I'm wrong, but I have heard for example that some older Hondas can be horrendously expensive for parts, so you could get a nasty surprise if you buy one of those without a RWC.

In that price range a car that comes with a RWC could be worth its weight in gold if comparably priced to one without. You must have a roadworthy in order to register it in your name. Please also check the REVS register to make sure it isn't stolen or have money owing on it!

Cheers guys that clears it up a little for me. Was going to look at something very simple, more along the lines of a laser or maybe and old excel, plenty of em around and I'm guessing not to hard to find parts. Would probably only keep it for a year or less till she has learnt and then get something a little more decent. Just want something that I don't have to worry about to start with, put 3rd party insurance on it and leave it at that.

Rent a Corolla or similar to teach her how to drive a manual. Did that with my ex missus.
