I was looking at installing the PPG gearset into the Vy (series 1 R8, I think its the T56 g/box).
Just wondering if anyone has done it before on here and can advise on cost and effectiveness as well as how it actually works, is it "no clutch required from 1st till 4th, clutch required from 5th to 6th and clutch required to go back gears" or is it different?
Any info appreciated.

My understanding of dog box is that they are stronger, but the t56 is almost bullet proof!

I don't doubt that its strong, I am just looking to remove the need to use the clutch for the majority of the gearshifting
Found a document that priced the setup for the T56 as $6600 plus GST dated April 2008.
Apparently can withstand "power potential of over 1300hp", sounds like some serious strength.

Yeah it can but maintenance on a dog box is alot higher than a normal synchro box. Also driving a dog box in traffic takes some practice and you'll end up farking up the dog engagement teeth if you aren't careful and they are the ones you'll be doing the maintenance on as well.
Do PPG do a strengthened synchro gear set? If so look at that instead of a dog engagement.
As far as clutchless shifting goes yes you can upshift without it, but then you can with a synchro box as well, just a matter of slightly unloading the dog set and shifting in a committed and purposeful manner, for downshifting you need to rev match, this takes more practice.

Not driven in traffic mate, its restricted to wide open plains with the occasional stop sign.
Dunno whether PPG do a strengthened synchro set.
Maintenance wise, the car is lucky to see 1000k's in a year, and has not even cracked it for 700 so far this year.

Should be fine then :) Check and see if they do a synchro box, otherwise go with the dog set. The advantage of the dog set is that you don't need the extra room on the shaft for the actual synchro mechanism you can have a wider gear set which will add strength.

Now to find someone who can install the kit.

Get onto PPG and get them to recommend someone to do it, they will have a list of people who can do a good job. Here in Brisbane I'd recommend Robin Berado.

I'm in the newcastle / maitland area in NSW, unfortunately I can only think of g/box places that have a bad reputation off the top of my head.
Maybe a place other than a dedicated g/box mob can do it.

They change about as fast as you can shift but with a bit of a thud when not WOT. Feels a bit like a shift kitted auto cruising around but it's good. I don't have one myself but have been in a few cars with them

No r33, wrx and a T5 box. Best email PPG regarding it, I made some enquiries with them and they were really helpful. Are you worried it wouldn't handle 7000rpm?

N...Are you worried it wouldn't handle 7000rpm?
No. That bit will be OK.
I want to see a video of how fast it changes at 7000
My application is Road Race/ Circuit race car
The YT vids I can find change at low revs and even a T56 can do that

have you had a look at the Terminator build thread on fordforums.com.au, CAT600 has a dog box one in his AU and it looks like fun.

I bit the bullet.
My T56 with PPG dog gears is finished and will be shipped to me this week.
But last week we buried my beautiful father and I have decided to go the full hog and fit a 6 speed squential at the end of this season. Lifes too short.
SO ANYONE WHO WANTS A PPG DOG BOX THAT BOLTS STRAIGHT IN WHERE A
T56 CAME OUT PM ME.
It will be for sale in December for much less than you can build one.

There is a bit of interest so its easier if you guys send me your email addresses and when I get more info i will send out an email with pics and links to videos of it in my car.
In meantime here is a video someone kindly sent me about a F0rd with a similar PPG geared box
Check the fast changes. Looks pretty good to me even if its a f0rD. lol

Hahah it is a bit of a line up isn't it.. Its just the stupid price for PPG to do it in adelaide.
I did get onto Kinsler in the US but they are not great at email. The pricing was a fair bit more competitive using PPG gearsets.
It would be the most expensive group buy ever
