Hello All,

I did a quick search but haven't been able to find all the answers. I'm doing an oil change soon. I'm probably going to get Castrol Edge 10W60 & just wondering:

1. Is there a slightly larger container of Castrol Edge 10W60 that is bigger than 5L?

2. Or if not, should I purchase 2-off 5L containers or will 1-off 5L & 1-off 1L containers be enough?

3. What is the going rate ($) of Castrol Edge 10W60?

4. Where do most people purchase this oil (i.e. who generally has the most competitive price)?

I'm also going to change my diff oil & use Castrol SAF-XA, what size container does this come in? 2L?

Thanks guys

I just buy 2 x 5lt and use the second one to top-up the fill for each oil change, ie - to get to the 5.5-6lt needed. So, the 'second' bottle lasts around 5 or so oil changes.

As for cost, around $70 for 5lt.

Cheers,

Macca

I just chuck 5L in without even stopping to look any more. For mine 5L puts it exactly on the full mark.

That's interesting. Would that mean that your engine needs a flush? Or are people just over filling their engines?

Manual says it needs 5L's so Id say the latter. It is possible that the dipstick was revised in the later models as a stop gap for the oil consumption that was apparent on some cars.

here is the manual reference FYI too

Average price for Edge 10-60 = $65 and available from Supercheap, RipEveryPoorC*ntOff, Autopro etc etc etc.

I only bother putting 5lt in mine as well because I don't do a lot of WOT action so don't get problems with "oil surge".

If you race yours regularly, sure ... go the additional 500ish mls but as others have said, edge only comes in 5lt amounts.

Re: diff oil ... I think the castrol stuff comes in 2.5lt but don't quote me on that.

I think you are right. I heard a while back that the dipstick was revised to cover the oil consumption problems.

Hi,

Just the info I was looking for. First service in a few days ( 3,000 km ), some tappet rattle, and when I popped into a performance centre, they thought it was likely the oil quality.

No oil change is scheduled, but I will have it changed anyway, plus a filter. I don't intend to blow 45,000+ because I don't look after the car that has taken me literally years to buy. ( black VE SS, with sunroof, all leather interior . Saved the differnce between it and the SS-V for those performance bits I really wanted - but thats another search).

I'll grab 5L of Castrol Edge when I take it in for it's first service, and get them to use that. Is that really the oil I should use ? Theres oils, then theres oils :), they were going to use Castrol Mag. I don't mind paying the extra, just like only using 98RON ( I seem to do better with Shell )

Cheers

everyone has a favourite they like to use.
every engine likes something different.

ive just found out my one doesnt like the $60 worth of 10w50 that i put in it 2 weeks ago

maybe i'll try some fuchs or edge 5w30. experiment and you'll know when the engine and you are both happy :)

hahaha, your right, I meant 2 X 5L.

As for the next post, experiment, no way, thats why I joined this forum. You guys have the answers, you've been there. I hope you have many many more answers, and in the future, I will have a few answers as well.

So edge it is ( there you go, one answer already).

Thats strange, my VZ takes 5.5 litres to fill, I always over fill 0.5 as I have a habit of liking the corners and I don't want oil surge at 6500rpm.

I've switched from Penrite hpr10 to castrol edge 5w30 (I use nulon oil flush at every service) to experiment, seems to run better now, hits limiter quicker.

thats what i got, 2x bottles of hpr10... not impressed :vpo:

waste of an oil filter imho.

I was thinking of giving the new shell racing ultra 10w60 a go in my VE. Anyone used this?

For the diff oil i use castrol LSX 90 with the diff additive from holden, it quiet'nd the diff and also got rid of a fair bit of shudder.

I just did the diff and gearbox oil in my VT, used the same diff oil and it got rid of the clunk (+ the $70 holden additive). Had to buy 2 x 1LT bottles as it took about 1.5 LT's

If you use the Castrol synthetic oil XAF-XA, do you need to use the diff additive from Holden?

No as it already has it in the oil.

I tried the Edge 10w 60 hoping to quieten that lifter noise (6lt WL) you get in the first few minutes of a cold start.....hasnt made a difference unfortunately. Picked up 5lts from Supercheap for $58 but it was there last one so went nextdoor to Autobahn and had to pay $78......ouch.

Just realised, it was Castrol synthetic oil XAF-XA that I used. Also, I still used the diff additive from Holden. All good and very happy.
