Hi All,
i have a m3 e46 in my driveway while im house sitting and ive never driven one before.
I wan to take it for a quick cane around the block before the owner comes back from holidays.
Has anyoen driven one before?
theres so many buttons.
I managed to start it and pull it into the garage, but thats about it.
I noticed on the tacho that at 6000 - 8000rpm was a red bar, im guessing the car has to warm up sufficiently to unleash all the power?
Is there a M button i have to press to get a good round the block from it?

I'd leave it in the garage if I were you. You sound like you are going to kill yourself in it.

If I got back from holidays and found someone had driven my car like that I'd be pretty pissed... especially if it got confiscated for it. On the other hand, if he's a reasonable mate, ask him when he gets back and he'll prob take you for a spin in it no probs... just beware of the consequences if you do take it out. It's alotta car to lose.

Got one here. Dont play with it. Yes the rev limiter is set on engine temp. Hmm and im not going to tell you how to use "Launch Mode" :p
You sound like a real class act.
Wanna house sit for me too?

I'll tell ya.
You've got R-N-O
r - reverse
n - neural
o - drive
then you can go across to your left for tiptronic shifting. O will do you fine.
Beneath the shifter you've got your shift settings. Up for harder, down for softer.
No m button in the e46.
It does have launch control but dont worry about that you've only got a limited amount of times it will work (40 or 50 times), save them for the real owner.
Put your seat belt on. Let the car warm up for a good 5mins. DONT SWITCH OFF DSC/ASC BUTTON. It's automatically on leave it on.
Don't crash.

So does that mean the next time your car's in for service you'll offer to let the apprentice use your car to thrash down the shops and get the pies? Of course not, how about showing the same amount of respect to someone elses car as you would expect of yours.

Do not do it.
I sure hope it isn't my fathers M3, although he isn't on holidays at the moment
The tacho lights go out as the engine oil temp increases.
How are you going to feel when the insurance company knocks on your door to pay for it when you damage it? Not worth a quick thrill.

Instead of thinking about taking other peoples cars for a 'cane', I think you should take a good hard look at yourself and learn to respect other peoples hard-earned property. You've been given a whole lot of responsibility that your obviously not prepared for.
If you do take it i hope you get caught speeding and get charged with driving a stolen vehicle.

Go spend a couple of grand and you could easily do 0-100 in sub 5 seconds in your Calais. Spend $5K and you will blitz the M3 in a straight line no problems at all.
Personally, I don't thrash anyone else car unless they ask me to or I tell them I am going to and they still hand over the keys.

I say let him go for it. If he wants to mistreat someone elses property, good for him. It'll come back to haunt him if something goes wrong. Natural selection.

Is there a M button i have to press to get a good round the block from it?Obviously totally bereft of any ethics. You've been given the responsibility of looking after the guy's house and car and yet you can't help yourself. Except that it'd be a shame if you damaged it, you almost deserve to have to face the music.
As someone else said - he may have noted the mileage, and also - he will have far more respect for you if you tell him you were tempted, but didn't. He's quite likely to say - "here - have a go".
If you do do it - I sorta hope karma gets you... It'd be poetic justice if someone used and abused your car without your permission and then hear you bleat about it.
Grow up and be a man and show that you do have some ethics.

Plenty of good advice on here...big risk if its goes wrong or he finds out! Go to a dealer and ask if you can take one of theirs for a trash...guaranteed they will tell you the same thing your "mate" would!!
Be careful if you are overtaken by intrigue and temptation...

I'm with seldo on this one....
BTW FYI I always note the km's on my cars when they go in for service or when family/friends house sits when I go O/S.
The chances are he has probably already told you not to drive it....

'Ferris bullers day' off watch that movie first, shit goes wrong. never say never will happen. car pulls outa a driveway or something, anything can happen, maybe not your fault, but does it matter whos fault it might be.
wait till he's back and/or ask first. he might be ok with that. why sneak off with it?
when i go away i write down the K's and take the keys

wow,
i cant believe the post some of you guys are replying like you are offended.
I asked for directions because i wanted to take it for a drive.
Without reading any additional posts in this thread i had already parked it behind 2 other cars and have the keys on the key rack.
its amazing how some people get trolled from a post on the internets.
My post also asked a bunch of questions regarding startup of the car and the tacho lights which were answered after i had spent 3 minutes in the car trying to start it and move it off the road which was daunting enough to do a u turn to get it into the garage
I also like the fact that many of you assumed i had no permission to drive it and i was house sitting a random strangers house?

Hey mate,
Maybe before you post something like this think harder about your wording as not to incriminate yourself. Reading between the lines says too all that you are about to drive an expensive high powered car with no knowledge of it at all.Thats disaster about to occur.
Sorry if this seems harsh but this is a forum and people only reply to what they read and how they read it???????
Wait till the owners home and ask them to go with you. If they trusted you to look after it while they were away then surely they will trust you to drive it with them.
ALL MY OPINION.
Cheers,
Andy.

Sure doesn't sound like the owner has given you permission to drive/cane it....

as soon as i, and probably everyone else read this, they knew you shouldnt be anywhere near the vehicle
if your so scared of it that you have to resort to posting on the internet for advice for essentially driving a car, i would highly recomend you leave it alone.
its also a measure of confidence and your ability as a driver.

If you had permission to drive it, you wouldn't be wanting to take it for a quick 'cane' before they get home. Your also asking about the redline, and whether it needed to be 'warmed up' before hand? dont try to backpedal mate, you've already put your foot in it.
If someone so much as started my car without my permission, There would be hell to pay.

Also, regarding the confidence question...
A lack of confidence is no sign of weekness, it is a sign that i would rather know all i can about what im about to undertake before doing so.
Its amazing how much you learn if you read a book / manual on said task and do it properly the first time.

No. It's a sign that you are clearly 18-years-old and have accidently stumbled onto LS1.com.au instead of streetcommodores.com.au. If I wanted to read random dribble thats where I'd be looking, so thats where you should be posting.
