Clubby was based on an executive and R8 was based on the calais IIRC...Im sure someone will correct me if Im mistaken :-)

Was the case in the past, but they have their own spot on the production line now, so a Clubsport goes down the line as a Clubsport...

I thought that the VT-VZ R8 was based on a Berlina because they only have a variable ratio power steering rack where as the Calais / Statesman has a "speed sensitive" variable ratio power steering which is an entirely different rack altogether.

The basis was only for the interior fitment, not for powertrain or suspension fitments.
VY-VZ were based on Berlina (I think the Berlina had single zone climate vs dual zone in Calais,) - but I think VT-VX it was Calais (all single zone climate and the full range of power adjustment for seats).

a few badges here and there, but mainly interior and in some cases wheels and brakes.
In all cases the wheels & brakes were different to the standard clubsport. Also got different suspension, climate control, coulsen front seats, sound system with amp, subs & stacker & a few other little things here or there.
Considering the prices of the VX Clubby versus the price of a VX R8 are not that different these days, if you have the extra coin go the R8. They handle & stop better than a standard clubby & the Coulsens are still a great seat. I have had mine since new & still love it.
Good luck with it all.
Cheers

I wish you luck. When I was looking over twelve months ago they were all really rough. I think I looked at every VT/VX for sale at the time. I ended up driving 2 1/2 hours down south to look at the VT R8 that I bought. Best advice I can give is to not rush into buying one. Have a good look around before you decide on one. If your patient you will find a nice one.

Look hard and long - I was looking at a few - test drove them, and was far from impressed. Various knocks in the suspension, suspect diffs to name a few problems. Ended up completely putting off the purchase altogether.
If you find a good one, buy it. The VX R8's (particularly S2's) are a very nice car. If you can stretch, get a VXII R8.

Not a VX R8 at this stage.
I have a VY R8 that i will need to sell soon due to a marrage split.
Less than 50,000ks, leather, 3.73 kaas diff, cam, Chipmaster custom maffless tune, Auto.
Even I would say that its not the best example that I have seen
But it is a daily driven car. August I was given a price of $30g from a car yard to buy it from me.
So I wouldnt ask anymore than that. Prob $28g would be the lowest I would go.
Picture of car in this post. Cheers Pete

Not all R8's have the bigger brakes.... OR the climate control.... I know this as my mate has one and it doesnt...
They do however have the bigger and better coulsen seats (the wrap around head rest which looks awesome) chome strips around the windows and they have different wheels.... however they are still the same size... 18's.. as far as suspension goes im not to sure but its definately worth the extra dough just for the seats as they look so much better. also most of them do actually have the upgraded brakes.. some even have the even further upgraded GTS brakes and theres also goodies that im prob not familiar with

I would have sworn all VX R8's and VXII R8's had climate control - was one of the reasons the car cost another $8k or so - because of the Calais base from which it was built (which explains the extra chrome trimmings). Bigger brakes were an option, but stock they retained the "normal" brakes of the Clubsport.

Yeah i said the exact same thing..... Thats why when my mate picked his car up, I saw it didnt and im like... whoa dude I think it might be a fake... But we got it checked out and it Its genuine..... after seeing that I also noticed that ive seen a few in car lotz without the climate control.... weird... it makes you wonder how many people are paying so many extra dollars.... for so little extras new..... R8's are a great car... But 8k or however much different they are is not a price worth paying for a bigger head rest and some chrome in my opinion...... I still love MY R8 tho lol. Cheers

I believe a genuine VX R8 would have the climate control dash and bigger 330mm front brakes, different style (but same size) wheels. I would say an R8 without them is non genuine, or perhaps had bits removed (perhaps stolen). The VX R8 is Berlina based, I think both R8 and standard Clubsport had the 10 stack CD in the boot as fitted to a Calais. HSV's website will give you some clues. Not sure that the suspension is different to standard Clubby. Body kit is the same. The Coulson seats have already been mentioned.

Looking at HSV website after I sent reply, yep it says single CD for Standard VX Clubsport - For the cost difference as a used car these days I think the R8 is the pick. I guess a reason a VX R8 might not have the bigger brakes is if a previous owner didn't want to pay the extra when replacing discs may have down graded to standard 296mm discs (would need to downgrade calipers also).

the bigger brakes and climate control was an option from factory for the R8, GTS was standard. i have seen a few R8's without the bigger brakes

I know that plenty have tried to assist, but to be honest, ALL of the specs can be found on the HSV website now. BTW - the VX R8 AND GTS were Berlina-based, only the Senator was Calais-based.
