Hi All,
This is my first post with this site. I have a Vr Caprice (185i), and have just been told that I need a new or reconditioned gearbox. I will be honest and admit I am not the most mechanically minded bloke, but I am researching and learning the ropes.
I see that the Gearbox is a GM 4L60-E. Can anyone help me to find the following:
a) is this the only gearbox that will fit
b)If not, what others will work.
c) I am in brisbane (northside), so hoping that someone can recommend a good mechanic to take the car to to get the gearbox done.
Cheers
MIK

If it's a 460 then a 465 should fit and is a stronger box. Holmart (sponsor) have them brand new for just under 2k. See http://holmart.com.au/online/category6_1.htm#1906
It says will suit VTII - VZ but if yours already has a 460 I'm guessing the 465 should fit too??? Maybe someone with more knowledge of these things than me can confirm or deny. They usually have the 460s even cheaper, so maybe contact them to see.
I'd think that would be by far a better option than getting yours reconditioned. My brother-in-law had a VS on which the auto died and the dealer quoted him $2,500 to reco it - and that was about 8 years ago!!!
The other thing to do would be see Powertorque to see what they say as most of those type shops can manage to do the whole thing changeover with new auto for around the 2k mark, as my daughter's boyfriend had done down here about 2 years ago with his auto.
Isn't one of the big well known and regarded auto places often referred to on here up there somewhere??? Craig's or Mark's???? If so that's probably your best bet.

Dude, If you have spoken to me about 4 months ago I had a spare one that I sold for $50!!!!
Unlucky. Have a look on ebay and try the wreckers and see what you can find...

4L65E will NOT fit the 5lt without an adapter plate as the bolt up pattern for the LS1 is different to the 5lt, also I think the connectors in the box are different to the 4L60E so you will need to find out about that also. I'd go and speak to a auto trans shop and see what they can do.

The original post reads as though there is already a 4L60 in it, so wouldn't it already have an adaptor which suits even the 4L65?
