Hi All,

Did a quick search but couldn't find what I wanted so am posting this - apologies if already posted.

I want to get my SSv lowered - I'm in the south east of Melbourne (Cranbourne) and was wanting to know the best place - recommended by you - to get it done.

All advice appreciated!

I'm about to get my VX lowered at either TTF or Jax Quik Fit Tyres but to be honest, I don't have a clue where else to get it done (in the North of Melbourne).

Good luck, hope some of the guys can list some places etc.

Are you just after lowered springs or are you after a complete coil over style suspension?

You can buy king springs off the shelf and have them installed by any decent tyre shop. I'll pm you the details of a decent tyre shop that lowers cars and is a decent bloke to boot

Thanks for PM-ing me, much appreciated!

As for springs or coil overs - I don't really know... don't know too much about advantages/disadvantages/costs of either.

And thanks Millsy :)

Try Chev's Performance Centre in Carrum Downs (check the sponsors section or their website for contact details). Great bunch of blokes and will treat you right :)

I recommend FDO in Ferntree Gully. They charged me $450 drive in drive out for my VZ SS.

If you just want a lowered car then coil overs are not what you are after really. Coil overs offer height adjustment, shock/damper adjustment and can offer camber and caster adjustment (dont quote on the last one). They generally have stiffer spring rates as they are aimed more at people who intend on doing some circuit racing. A fair few guys on here use tein coil overs in their VEs, while others use HSD (I think thats their name) coil overs. Coil overs are also around the $2000 mark normally

I think the best option for you mate would be a set of lowered king springs (and you need to work out how low you want your car) and a set of good quality shocks either koni's or bilstiens (spelling sorry). Both offer adjustable versions which will allow you to change your ride quality to a certain extend. For something similar to what is mentioned above you be looking at around $1300 or so

For sound advice mate go see a suspension specialist - Nathan at Advantage suspension in Moorabbin does some great work and offers great advice.

Id call Autotechnique and get a set of tein coilovers.. that way you can set it to whatever height you want, adjust hard/softness etc.. and it will handle like its on rails.. that way shocks and springs are done in one whack and Tein is a quality brand..

What springs?

They are pedders springs.

I can post a pic if anyone is interested. The height is similar to king superlows, perfect for my liking.

That's an amazing price for Pedders! If you went to Pedders themselves (rip off artists) for the same thing they'd want at least $650 - $700!! I know because I went in for quotes for both the VZ SS I had and the SSV and came away shaking my head and :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: (and that was supposedly trade price given where I worked at the time!).

Just to clarify a couple of points there young fella -

## If you just want your car lowered then coil overs are not really what your really after.

Coil overs will allow you to retain sufficient travel after lowering the car and will provide a far more compliant ride.By just putting lowered springs in with standard struts you will sacrifice ride quality.

## Coil overs offer shock damper adjustment.

The ' Coil Over ' as such is only the configuration of the coil in relation to the strut. It has no bearing on Bump / Rebound as this is provided by the strut insert.

## Coil overs offer camber / castor adjustment.

A coil over will provide more camber adjustment but there is still plenty available with a standard strut but a coil over has no bearing on castor adjustment.

Apologies for jumping on you yesterday - I know you mean well but sometimes if your not sure about something then probally better off not giving the advice.

Cheers Mark

Would I be correct in saying that coilovers are generally firmer due to the spring being physically shorter and still having to support the same weight?

Also, the whole height adjustment thing is a little bit deceiving. I mean you have to get a wheel alignment each time you change the height. Still cool, but a lot of people dont realise that.

Also, to the person who estimated $1300 for springs all round and koni's or bilsteins fitted, I reckon that is a very generous price. If you can get it for that do it! Koni red shocks all round are around 900-1000 retail by themselves arent they?

I loooove koni's, but hopefully kyb release a range for the VE soon to give people a cheaper option.

mmm, lots of advice!! good to see :)

So, who here has just had their springs changed without the magical koni's etc? how bad is the ride?

Not sure I wanta spend that much this close to xmas :P

I have had my springs changed from the stock FE2 to King springs the first stage of lowering and the ride is great everything else in the suspension is stock. :)

But tell us why Nathan is clueless ???

Generally there is no real difference in overall spring length. What you loose is the lower spring mount that normally clashes with the tyre.On a road car set up you could actually run a longer spring with the coil overs as the coil can actually clear the tyre.

while they are cheap, their employees act like what we evolved from.

threading one bolt and putting another one the wrong size, while breaking their soft hammer to get my brake pads off, did not leave me with a very good impression of them.

they are cheap though ill give them that

Yeah they are definately cheap. I've had 2 cars lowered from them and no complaints so far; sorry to hear about your bad experience with them.

Yeah I was quite surprised too when I saw pedders springs on the car. I just told them I want the guard to be on top of the tyre, but never said anything about the brand.

I try and stay away from pedders themselves, they are only good for those $14 steering/suspension checks lol

i bought 90-10s for the mazda from him. When i put them in the car it was like 10-10s would just bounce . Gave them back and no drama he said i will fix them. Picked them up and not happy straight away, they were painted in two pack silver but not now. They were just placed straight in the vice, atleast could of put a rag around them:vpo:
Put them in car and front end would not even move up or down. jack front of car up and wait 10min for tyres to move down.
Went back and he said it should be fine, i gave them to a computerized suspension tester. So i asked for the print out and quess what, ah ah no print out i dont have it.

Gday mate,
Around 4 ,5 weeks ago mine was lowered at chevs with pedders front SL and back SSL. Also had the void bushes done and both front and back end alignment. Wasnt expensive but PM chev for prices mate.
The ride has stiffened but not that much and the car handles better than it did of the factory line.
Doesnt bottom out all the time also.

Cheers,

Andy.

just called them up again to get a quote on a set of superlow springs...$470 installed, i dunno if thats good or bad considering the springs themselves cost around $270, so they want $200 to install them, i dont think it takes 2.8hrs to install springs

after that shock, i asked (pretending to not know the asnwer) if i needed to replace the shocks or anything like that, and the guys like nah just the springs. didnt mention anything about getting lowered shocks, bump stops or a camber kit

fukn monkeys would never take my car to a place that lies to customers like that :flipoff:

I had mine done at a place I trust to not overdo times etc and that is about how long it took on my VE (the rears are no longer as simple as they used to be) - plus hopefully they do a full wheel alignment.
