Have an oil leak took it to holden they said you a have a number of oil leaks which are:
sump gasket and rear main plate
timing cover seal
power steering rack (WTF)
valley cover gaskets
cam sensor
All up this would come to a sum of $ 2431.
Just wanting to know which of these i could do myself besides the sump gasket and the rear main.
thanks

my advice, degrease the whole engine (top and bottom).

then drive it for a week and take it straight to an ls1 workshop (forum sponsor or other). get them to diagnose it again.

eg. your ps rack replacement could be your ps hoses leaking and running down :)

Goatie's advice is very good and will save you heaps of money.

As for a DIY timing cover seal job, you'd need a GOOD 3-jaw puller, a new crank bolt, timing cover seal and crank seal. The seals/bolt are around $60-80 all up to replace. You'd also need a longer bolt than the stock crank bolt, to get the harmonic balancer started and not strip the threads out of the crank snout. You could do it yourself - and change the cam at the same time...

If your leak is at the front, it could be the crank seal anyway.

Cheers,

Macca

my front crank seal wasn't leaking, but i put a new one in anyway while it was apart.

The old one was hard to get out, required more force than expected. the new one went in just using my thumbs, easily.

Seem a lot of leaks to me at once you have.

I'd do as above, degrease it all. But also check all the bolts are up to spec with tightness. And the hose clamps on the powersteer etc. then run it and keep a check for where they are start from, maybe daily. if you wait to long oil could be everywhere and hard to see where it started from.

report back on your findings

How many k's has the engine done? Sounds like a lot of leaks... Might be worthwhile checking the PCV is bleeding pressure like it should be. If this is blocked it'll force crankcase pressure out through the seals and cause oil leaks.

For not a lot more you will probably find a forum sponser who will rebuild the bottom end and that way you will have all new gaskets, bearings, rings, pistons. maybe budget for a new set of lifters (a not uncommon LS1 problem) and give your car a new lease of life.
