View Full Version : Does Loud mean droning ????

Hi there guys,
Im just trying to get my head around the whole droning issue. I have a full 2.5 inch exhaust including headers. No drone but not very loud. Ive owned a few V8's VP interceptor, VN SS, VT R8. My uncle has a TT Monaro ( MEISS) are his plates. Each one that was loud i never noticed droning. My VNSS had 3' exhaust no rear muffler sounded amazing.
So what im trying to say is that does having a loud exhaust mean your going to get droning ??? Ive been around V8's my whole life dads had a few starting with a 350 hq monaro. And ive never heard of droning untill i got online.
Im guessing that living in inner melb and always changing gears you probably wouldn't notice the droning as much, as someone doing freeway driving ???
This has all came up since im thinking of dropping rear mufflers to get that old school V8 rumble.
cheers Paul

really depends on what sort of aftermarket exhaust your running and what mid mufflers your using to.... my mate dropped his rear resonator and sounded SWEET... i copied him thinking id get the same results... no... Droned like a bitch. I had to drop all mufflers and just have two hot dogs and still didnt sound right.... and still fairly quiet... so my system is crap no name brand.
its better off just going to a place and forking out the dough for a decnet system otherwise you just end up spending more and more dollars doing up your shit one and still never be satisfied

I had a Sureflo 3.5 Medium (2 mid muffler and big rear resi) on
a cammed car and it had pretty well zero drone. With the windows
up the car was silent inside. Made a hell of a lot of noise out the
back though. The Twin 3 inch that I replaced it with does have
some drone at certain revs, but not enough to really bother me :)

Yeah mate you got to be carefull with exhausts on LS1's and avoiding drone. It a bit brand and setup dependant.
I agree on the VNSS with big system quote. You could throw anything big on the old 5L and make it sound farrking awesome. Thats one area where NO LS1 can compete with the old girl.. Do miss my VN SS for that aspect

I think all exhausts have droning at some point in the rev range, but with louder exhausts the droning becomes more prominent (and annoying).
From my experience, exhaust drone comes in at a certain rev band (2000-3000rpm in most cars) Depending on how you drive and what type of transmission you've got depends on how bad the drone is. If you've got a manual and your revving the car quickly through the gears drone doesn't really matter. But if you've got an auto and your driving at a slowish pace it will drive you mad. I've heard the same exhaust on a manual and its sounded sweet, but on an auto it was drone city.

some one asked a while ago what drone was, so i made a video!
haha its that deap annoying noise that goes thru your car at certain revs.
My cars manual so you can drive around it, and i deliberatly made it bad for the video, normaly its silent in the car :)

just for interest sakes this is the exhaust out side the car

I like it loud and don't mind a little drone, seems to concern others more than it does me.
Anyway I agree with black 346, the dual 3inch sounds awesome with the cam combo, much better than the 2.5 with removed rear resi. The 3inch xforce is a lot deeper and with the rear resi still on I reakon it sounds just as loud if not louder, and with a nicer note on idle, cruise and under the foot. I wonder what it would be like with the rear resi removed??

I've done extractors, left factory cats untouched, 2 1/2 " through a hotdog each into single 3" outlet. Not a branded exhaust, just what the local exhaust shop made/fitted. Definitely has the 'old school rumble', and no drone at all doing usual highway speeds. Hope this helps.

i had standard exhaust with the resinator removed on a stock VR CLUBSPORT sounded great with no drone, then i fitted pacemakers and a dual 2.5'' exhaust with redback mufflers and no resinator it droned bad, so i put two hotdogs at the back as well as the mufflers and it still droned but not quite as bad.
i now have a VY CLUBSPORT cammed and supercharged running tri-y's, 3'' cats, dual 2.5'' custom mufflers with dump pipes straight off the mufflers, it sounds awsome not to loud untill 'wot' and no drone at all and its very quiet inside the car cruising on the highway

Just try it and see what you think Paul. Different people have different tolerances to drone and what annoys the hell out of one person (usually women and children) petrol heads like us don't even notice.
My original VE exhaust droned like a bitch from 1200 to 2000 rpm, especially under load, but even in an auto I could live with it. However, my wife and daughters complained on the odd occasion they were in it. KPM lived up to their reputation and provided me another one which sounded even better and sitting on 1500 - 1600 rpm like on the cruise today there is absolutely no drone, though you know it has an exhaust on it as you can hear it in the background.
My guess is a VE V8 with no rear mufflers will drone, but it may be something you are prepared to live with for a better V8 noise, as I did many years ago with my SV8 before I could afford a proper exhaust.

If it does drone just put the rear cans back on. If it doesn't, I saw a pair of tail pipes for VE with no mufflers and each one with twin tips on it on eBay for about $180 from memory. Also note that just testing it with the pipes finishing under the car somewhere as you may do just to see what it sounds like is (I am pretty sure) illegal but probably OK for just a short test and will probably add to the drone.
So if there is a little bit of drone it should hopefully improve once you get pipes on the rear so it doesn't finish under the body.

Will deffinatly give that a try and give it a spin around the block to see how it sounds. Those pipes are now $300 on ebay :/ Though been told thats not a bad deal considering there 3' quad tips.

Hey paul,
My only word of advice would be that exhausts are better heard at WOT but when you are cruiseing around the streets doing everyday travelling it would be better to have a note out back but not to loud.
Police are cracking down on loud exhausts and people are dobbing in hoons just because their exhausts are loud. :flipoff:to them.
So with removing back noise boxes you may have a much more droney note that will be heard from miles away.
Most of the guys that have removed their rear resi's have put them back on from what ive seen.
Best of luck in your choices and stay off the hoon list mate:rofl::rofl:
Cheers,
Andy.

Ive noticed with my old exhausts that magnaflow mufflers, ive only ever used 2 not the usual 4, drone a bit but its a damn good sounding drone with note not just a booming bowel movement :D. I got done for noise recently though cause of the cam so i had to change to a difillipo twin 3 full system with a centre muffler at least a 3rd of the length of the car, i am surprised it sounds pretty decent for being so smothered and made good power with absolutely no drone at all.

I know some cat backs will drone more than others. Here in the States Spintech and Corsa are two brands that do not drone much. I have Spintech on my GTO and I don't notice any. I think the only time it would drone is if the mufflers are located behind the rear axle or you have an automatic. At least that what I have heard for the GTO/Monaro.

from my personal experience, cat back only = drone
headers, opened cats and quality cat back = no drone(very minimal)
the ls1 has a smooth note and seem to drone compaired to the ol 308 an 5lt.
the old v8`s you can wack any ol exhaust on and they will sound good.
on the weekend i was behind wonky and it sounds mint! the tips also look phfat!!
