View Full Version : TURBO 408ci DRAG UTE

Its been a while since the ute has seen the black top and now the sweet smell of track bite is nearing! The stroker combination was finalised and the L76 came out of the ute for the rebuild. The heads were sent away to HPC along with the Manley valves, Mahle pistons and custom manifolds for some Extreme coating. Arp studs used thoughout running standard head gaskets with the compression at 8.9:1. TD rockers were used rocking polished manley valve springs.
The turbo was sent away for a tickle with a 1.15 AR being used as the .96 AR was now too small. With the figures run the GTS 76mm turbo will be flowing max effeciency at 14 psi pushing out 1100 shaft horse power! Pretty happy with this as a low boost setting for a 500 plus rwkw is what we are chasing.
Hopefully will have this running for some testing at the boxing day challenge at Heathcote Park.
More photo's and footage will follow as project progresses.

Its going to be manual to start with until we get a sub 9.90 e/t if i can remember how to drive a stick shift, then a t400 or a glide. After we have got the most out of it down the quater the manual will go back in along with some harrop stoppers and track suspention for a bit of tarmac rally. Looking forward to this!

Got a bit more under bonnet done today fitting the high rise rocker covers to suit the bloody huge TD rockers, mounted the pressure reg and replaced the blue high pressure hose with braid. Clipped up most of the electrical, turbo oil supply and coolant lines. Tuesday will have the loom revived with a going over and a gauge binnicle for the eboost and oil pressure gauges fitted.

How well is that size intercooler working with the boost your running ?

30-12-2008, 08:32 AM
Hey Clinton, i have not looked into that side of things as yet but it does look a bit small versus the litres of the engine! It has'nt seemed to affect the the power figures as yet but in saying that its now a 6.6 litre so not to sure on the outcome as i am still running the engine in on the street. Will be running some figures on the volume side of boost supply early next year though. Mick has tuned it run 7 psi with good fueling and i think at around the 700kms mark it can have some more boost, mobil1 and some VP109 for a power run. Looking forward to this!

Gday Mr Statie, I attacked with a air hack saw and gave her the tubbing when she was still upopened, so 10 inch rubber now resides on 9 inch custom rims. Im thinking of going a ten inch radial soon though. Bricker ( an EH i think ) is wheel standing on those puppies! He is about 4 inches shorter and weighs a little less but you only have to look at that crazy bloody pontiac at the last ls1 nats to see that its possible with the right combo! Im also thinking of a 60 shot of gas off the line. Oh im getting all giddy, i cant wait for the nationals! :smilesandbanana:

I just stitched the old steel tubs back in with 50mm cut off the tray and 50mm strip in place on the tub. Works a treat! Only took about 4 hours. Need a 9 inch now as i think the little stock 3.7 locker will be nuked. Have you got yourself a 9 inch?

Nearly there. All but one thing remains to see what kind of numbers the ute will produce! MORE BOOST. Mick tuned another turbo being the brother kit of the one i run, adjoined to a cast iron 6 litre with 12psi on pump gas it made 512 rwkw on a manual. I have stuck with the alloy block but have a few more internal goodies and 600cc more volume so im tipping 550rwkw. Whats your guess?

Not dumb at all mate! A single core would be a much better choice, in saying that it only cost $50 to modify with the twin setup. A single 150mm setup was over $2000.00. Im not chasing insane power, just reliability and a little more torque. With a 2 step its going to be fun especially when you see it used on the supra in the video here......

Quick update!
We had the ute on the dyno testing function today and after a quick boost check and some minor recalibration ran it up. In previous form with a gts 76mm Billet turbo it made 560rwkw@6200rpm with 109 octane running 14psi. Although there was problems with intercooler and turbine housing size...
With the intercooler mods, Today the Garrett GT4788r made 511rwkw@4200rpm and a massive 1700nm of torque with 98 octane on 12psi! Air intake temps were 24 degrees toward the end of the run. At 2500rpm its making 1000nm of torque!
Note this is only a system function test so optimum revolutions and timing is still to come.
Cant wait to turn up the boost and mash the keys to see what this puppy can do!

Yes the benefits are great but the cost versus are not so unless your chasing tower horsepower figures. I have a design clip on for dry ice pellets to go in front of the coolers but will add that next time out. Intake temps at the end of a power run are 22 degrees c.
Dry ice setup is a lot cheaper than you may think especially for what you need..... Your intake temps would be closer to -22degrees rather that +22degress like you have now...... I know on a mates corolla wagon that went 9.30 at 145mph his intake temps were -35degress on the dyno...... Its well worth a look...... Best of luck the car looks and sounds wicked....

Cheers for your input! Our dry ice intercooler setup exceeds the alloy l76 blocks hp capabilities... How much does the corolla weigh?

Hell yeah! This time out the combination was on the money! 9.95@ 147mph was the pb and as far as i know the quickest manual LSX in the country.
The 4 inch cooler piping really made a difference to the power delivery and the tune slightly tweaked to suit.
Cheers fellas and to the red sled and its 2nd record. Dont mind me il be beating my chest for weeks. There's been enough hours pushing it round the shop let alone swapping out combo's to not!
Thanks to Mick and Frank for all the help getting her there.
Rob, Jay, matt, jack and pete for the input, suggestions , tech advice and pushing her round the pits.
JD Custom, for the Intercooler piping and manifolds
GM Motorsport for the RIPSHIFT ! Awsome bit of gear...
Pat For the diff swap outs
Dave @ Frankston Engine Centre, for a stinking hot engine combo that has stood up to the punnishment
This was possibly the last time out for the Red Sled as it is being semi retired. But the Heart and soul will live on in another beast.
The Aps Frankston VXSS Sedan. Im looking forward to building another campfire with ya fellas.

Congrats on the 9, great achievement especially with a manual box.
Did anyone manage to get a vid of any of the 9s passes?
Is there anything special done to the box?
