Well hello everyone, first time poster here.
Been flicking through the threads and I've been impressed with the knowledge out there so i figured i'd add a question...
I want to upgrade the stock diff in my VE SV6. Where is a good place to get this done and what are the warranty implications etc...?
Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forums. What are you hoping to gain from the change? Just LSD (assuming yours doesn't have it) or a ratio change too? Are you looking at buying a new diff or pick one up second hand? Which side of Melbourne are you on?

Any upgrades you do will potentially void the warranty, even if using genuine parts from a different VE. Eg, a diff failure may not be swapped over for free if it's discovered there are low ratio HSV gears in there for one example. You potentially still would have parts warranty though (not new car warranty), as long as you use brand new genuine parts.

No i'm just after the LSD, not for a ratio change.
It would have to be a new diff. Currently living SE melbourne.

Sweet as! The problem is that GMH have no more VE SV6's with the LSD. I would've had to have waited until february to get one from the production lines...

What ratio do you have now ?
Holmart have complete diff centres starting at $480incl for
VE 2.92 LSD DIFF CENTERS "Originally supplied by GMH to SUIT VE V6 SV6 Manuals & Calais 5 speed Auto’s."

That's a very good price!! I believe the SV6s have a 2.92 ratio as standard, so given he really only wants LSD and not a ratio change that seems by far the best way to do it unless he can pick up one even cheaper from someone who has changed theirs to 3.27, 3.45 or 3.7.
If Holmart can organise the swap too then that may be easiest, otherwise given the OP's location I would definitely go and see Chev to have it done! :yup: Totally trustworthy and no bs honest advice!

A potentially silly question ... how do you tell if the LSD is fitted to your car (without jacking and turning) ... whats the code on the build plate?
I just got a V8 V Series Calais from Holden stock and the dealer told me they are fitted to the V8's ... but I dont trust him.

Unfortunately you were mislead. LSD is an option on non sports models eg Calais/Calais V. When the Calais had FE2 suspension as standard they were (from memory) a $350 option. Now that the Calais has FE1.5 as standard you can only get LSD and FE2 as a combined option for $690.
I believe LSDs have a metal tag attached to them saying LSD.

Wonky ... thanks for the info. Yeah I didn't think the dealer right.
Scirvo21 ... sorry to highjack your post ... but ...
When was the change over from FE2 to FE1.5, mines an October 07 build?
Is there any additional complications fitting an LSD to a FE1.5 fitted car?

Check the part number on the diff.
Even number = LSD
Odd = Open wheeler
When upgrading, you need to check what input flange size you need (PCD of the input flange bolts). They changed size across the all part numbers to suit the larger tailshaft end.

I can't remember for sure but think it was after that, so yours is probably FE2. Different springs/shocks make no difference to fitting LSD, so no problems whichever you have.

If i wanted to upgrade my diff to 3.45 and LSD, would I need a whole new housing or just change the gears?

Far better to just buy a complete 3.45 LSD - mine (with under 2,000km) cost me $500 on here and the ad was there for 2 days before I even saw it!! Have seen them advertised on here for up to $800! Tell them they're dreaming!!
If you do that you can always swap back if you ever want to sell the car and then put it in the next one or sell it on and recoup most/all of your money! :yup:

The tag on my VE Calais V had "LSD: N"
If you buy a later model diff you can apparently swap the flange to your original to make it fit.
If you are swapping diffs anyway then a ratio change is worthwhile.

:yup: Even with V8s in Calais/Calais V LSD is an extra cost (of course) option. :(
