Looking at trading up to a VZ SSZ ute with the L76 6.0l in it, just trying to find out info on it as i know the engine wasn't used for very long in the Holden line up...
Is it better/worse on fuel than the LS1 (i know the LS2 i had was worse than my LS1)?
What are the main differences to the L76 from the LS1 and also the L98 in the VE's?
Modification wise is it as easy to upgrade as other LSx cars, or does it's short lifespan in the Commodore series make parts harder/more expensive to come by?
Any current owners who have any info/stories about their VZ 6.0, please do reply!!

i'm pretty sure the L76 and L98 are identical except the L76 had DOD (displacement on demand) capability. they are a lot better engine than the ls1, it has more cubes and better heads. if you did a cam swap you would make a lot more power than with the same cam in an LS1. i'm sure some of the other guys/girls willl be able to tell you a lot more...

L76 was used in series 2 VZ
and some of the very last VZ utes had L98's
the L76 and L98 are the same motor
the difference is the DOD gear was removed from the L98 and they had a bigger sump
they are much better then the LS1 for performance with cam upgrade you can see up to 330rwkw and 350rwkw as even been achieved by GMM
the L76/98 have good heads standard(L92)
higher CR, better cam which makes them superior to the LS1

Ok i did think the L76 and L98 were the same but wasn't 100% sure, cheers for the help so far!!
Problem is, there's not many VZ 6.0 utes kicking around and the few that are for sale are the same price as a new VE SS ute, i much rather the VZ than the VE but wouldn't pay the same price for a 2 yr old one when i can get one new!!
Dilemma!!!
If you VZ 6.0 owners could post up fuel consumption figures, that would be great too cos my current LS1 auto is pretty good on the juice, hoping the VZ is the same!!

i get 13.5L per 100km acg speed of 55Ks, only issues with these engines is the questionable lifters and subsequent lifter noise. Alot of people remove them and i definately will be when i get a baby cam done. Otherwise they are much better then the 5.7 and much better down low.

New A6 V8 VE utes built in 2009 (as the one I have ordered will be) will have the L76 engine again, this time with DOD (AFM) operational.

Hmm yeah the LS2 VZ Maloo i had for a bit was terrible on fuel also, floated between 19-20l/100km doing the exact same driving as my LS1 Calais, yet the Calais was always between 11-13l/100km and was quicker than the Maloo...

Ok good to hear, my avg speed is around the same so the fuel consumption is only maginally more, i can live with that!!
OPTIMUS is yours auto or manual??
With the lifter issue, are they just noisy or have they been known to fail?? It's something i'll look at/listen for when i go have a look at a ute on sunday!!

Thanks 4 that, I dont no if I would have ticked the box for $1000 though they do look the part. and would be handy now as I wish to fit a teckedge wideband guage and that would be the place .

neither would i  i bought the car secondhand. they also paid over $3K for a press bent twin 2.5" exhaust which doesn't even have high flow cats  the dealer well and truly bent them over.

Mate have you taken one of the new VE utes for a drive? I had a VZ SS ute(5.7 GEN3) and it wasnt anywhere near as nice to drive as a VE.. obviously a 6L VZ ute would be better, but it creaked and groaned and felt nowhere near as strong and rigid as the VE...
if you hate the look of the VE then obviously disregard my comment...

I do like the VE utes, but if i'm gonna get a VE, i'd want the SS-V with all the good bits and that's going well over budget!!!
Went and took a look at the only VZ manual 6.0 for sale at a dealer in Vic, pretty rough for a car with 29,000km, lots of scratches and dints, and had been used as a work ute and showed in the tray area, very rough!!
Then they weren't willing to budge on price and gave me a trade in value i really wasn't happy with. Not too fussed, maybe it just wasn't meant to be!!
Oh well the search continues, might get an older, cheaper manual ute/sedan/coupe and get a new crate motor from one of the forum sponsors as VZ 6.0 manuals are pretty difficult to get!!!

Wouldn't have thought a VZ SS ute would have too much more of the "good stuff" than a VE "basic" SS ute! Maybe leather and climate possibly, but it's pretty much backward from there...

Yes i know that, but if i was to get a VE ute, i'd want it to be the top of the range one with all the "good stuff" the VE SS doesn't have, although it is cheaper.
Like with the VZ, that ute was the top of the range for that time.
Not comparing the features of the VZ and VE as such.

Considering dealers a slashing the prices of new cars (Holden in particualr), couldn't you find a 2nd hand VE SS-V for a decent price within your price range?
What is your price range if you don't mind me asking?

Mmmm cheapest SS-V manual ute at a dealer in Vic i've seen is 36,990...
Don't really have a set budget, more going on what my trade in is worth and what i have to put on top, have got some good offers for trade in and some rubbish ones, depends on how desperate the dealer is!!
Might sell my car privately in January and go from there, then i can at least look at some private sale utes too!!

The L76 and L98 are basically the same, as per what has alredy been said.
Once the cm and lifters etc have been changed, you have the same engine.
The only other difference is the pulleys set up, they are off set more.
This means that a supercharger off a L98 will not work on the L76 with the existing set up. You would need to change the pully set on the L98 supercharge or change the waterpump, alternator etc etc to sit.
Either way, no great deal, as long as you know.
