Im looking at purchasing a VY or VZ SS ute in the next couple of months and was wondering what the gearbox is like?

I currently drive an Evo 7, and the gearbox is awesome as you'd expect, the gears are tight, shifting is quick and easy and everything is nice and smooth.

My bro used to have a VY storm in the 6 speed manual and from memory it wasn't that bad.

But I've heard some reports the gearbox is sloppy and defers alot of people to autos.

Opinions?

G'day Pepps, I had an Evo 8, shift was much, much better in the Evo than in my VY SS. Having said that, the SS once I got used to it, wasn't too bad.

Perfect response I wanted, you understand the difference!

Have you installed a rip shifter or is it still standard?

Got an auto Clubby now :D Never used a Ripshift but a lot of guys on here have used them and recommend them.

Oh ok, good stuff.

Im originally after a manual but Im thinking about auto aswell now.

Hmm..is there much difference in fuel consumption around town between auto and manual? Lets just assume I'm a normal driver. Average is it around 13-14L/100km around town?

Manual's aren't the smoothest but then they are quite strong.
I'd still go another manual before buying an auto.

...and yes a ripshift will improve the feel of the M6

Auto will almost always use more fuel than manual in my experience, driving normally. The auto in the VY/Z is ordinary to bad in standard trim - the manual is definitely the box of choice in those models.
