Hey guys, I have a question regarding your experience and knowledge with Extractors and Cats for a VY II SS.

I currently have the Sureflo medium 3.5" cat back for it.

What I am looking at getting in the coming month is a DUS OTRCAI and Oztrack tune, which should lift the slug to an acceptable performance.

My enquiry is before the tune I would like to fit some new Extractors and Cats. I was looking at Pacemaker etc, but there are long, short, tri Y, 4 into 1, extension leads, no extensions etc etc, and the same with cats.

$2k seems a bit steep to me for pacies, and cats and pipes and fitting etc to hook up to my original system. Does anyone reccomend these or other brands or places to do the work?

Will it make that much of a difference in sound / performance over my stock front section when I get the tune, or will it be very minor?

Will it change the note, louder/quiter/tougher?

Sorry for the newb questions, I have come from turbos and dump pipes, this whole extractor and cat thing is new to me so your comments would be appreciated.

I just don't want to waste money on something that really doesn't need doing, that wont change the note or performance.

Thanks in advance guys:goodjob:

My experience having spent too much money on messing about with my Monaro exhaust is that the pacemaker 4-1's with the 3 inch outlet and 3 inch metal cats make a huge difference to the sound. I have run 3 different cat back systems with standard headers and HM short headers (2.5 inch outlet) with matching cats but it wasn't until I went to the paccies that I finally got a deep note which really sounded like a V8. My only regret is that I spent so much money trying other stuff before doing what many others on this forum recommended from the beginning.

Hey Skooby,
I underwent a very similar journey with my VYII SS ute.
Started with the same catback from Sureflo & was dissapointed with the exhaust note. After a few months saving $, went back for the front bits. The system only came alive when doing the extractors (Paccie Tri-Ys), cats & cat pipes. That's when the deep V8 sound came along.
I often wonder though if you could get a similar result with larger diameter cat pipes alone (the short pipe length immediately after cats to bolted exhaust flange) as stock was only 2" diameter each.

In my opinion, it makes a big difference to sound. A much better note where you can almost hear each cylinder firing with the bass blowing out the rear. For me, the cat-back only note is very fluffy & weak.

Regarding performance, an OTRCAI & tune will add very noticable performance gains regardless of exhaust. Add the extractors & it all sums up for better performance, a few KW at a time.

Your exhaust note will get tougher, not louder. If you want the great V8 noise, you have to pay for it. I enjoy hearing other LS1 exhausts out on the street. The twin 2.5" can sound great too (had that on my VUII SS ute). It's a bit hard to pull up next to all of them & ask what set-up they got.

Note that the Tri-Ys hang low & I have constant scraping issues with speed humps & driveways (got told this AFTER they were fitted). Is frustrating & would affect my next choice of system.

Cheers
Matt

I found that with the short headers and larger cats and cat pipes the note was cleaner but I didn't get that sound of each cylinder firing until I went long headers. Both pacemaker and diFilippo told me that you need the long headers to get that distinctive beat. My experience bears that out.

hey dude i have a vy ss which had a x force twin 3" fitted last year. was good upgrade and put out 192rwkw at kandos car show 2008.

here is a vid of what it sounded like
YouTube - twin 3" x force exhaust on vy ss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYDs1bYx4eI)

then a few months ago i had a set of pacemaker 4>1 long tube 1 3/4" and 3" metallic cats fitted. at the same time i had it mafless tuned by delft calais and it put out 246rwkw 2 weeks ago and still runs factory intake and filter till end of january when dus has some otr's in stock.

here is a vid of it after paccies cats and tune
YouTube - vy ss with full exhaust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8AVeoa4se8)

so after the extractors cats and tune the car was so different to drive and the sound got deeper and louder. i highly recommend these mods. mine cost $2200 for ceramic coated 4>1"s and 2 x 3" cats with stainless pipes all fitted.

hope this helps

Bang for bucks for performance would be the hsv short 4>1 with hsv cats. All you need to do is weld the pipes on the outside to the flange plate and clean up the weld on the inside off the pipe for better flow out off the exhaust port.I have seen engine dyno comparisons with these against some other brands and ther is not much to be gained on a std or mild cam motor. They are 1 5/8 primary and 2inch secondary and very simple to do at home on car stands.

Cheers for the reply's guys.

Thanks DUS, all sorted, signed sealed and delivered.

Time to work the magic, I may even have a go at the grinding to clean them up
