Hi all - Firstly - HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Need a little point in the right direction. My bro-in-law has just bought a VZ CV8 Monaro. Great condition - stock standard - low kms. Wait till I get my hands on it for a few mods !

It appears the previous owner continuously left it in the sun, or for whatever the reason - i.e. must've used sand paper on the steering wheel  because the thing is that cracked/faded - leather is chaffed, that it's not funny !!

It surprises me actually, because paintwork and rest of car, including leather interior, is in above average condition. Anyhow, how do we fix this? Is it a simple matter of getting perhaps a interior trimmer to 'retrim' the wheel or does it need a brand new steering wheel? Do we go to Holden for this, or is there anyone in Melbourne/Victoria (other than Holden) that can fix this at a better price than what our Holden Dealerships would charge?

Any suggestions/info would be appreciated.

Cheers

If you're anywhere near Campbellfield then before you get to the stage of replacing it I'd try to get Damian (Angelucci) of Final Inspection to have a look at it. He is a top class detailer and will be able to tell you if there is any way it can be resurrected or whether it needs a retrim or whole new wheel. Even if you're not out that way it may be worth contacting him as at the moment he is doing mobile detailing so may be in your area soon eg. was in Carrum Downs today.

you could get it retrimmed but it would cost more than a new one mabe, but check ebay, there are often leather wheels on there, but if you want a nice wheel that will last, then go for the vz caprice wheel, it has wood grain on the top and bottom and leather on the sides, looks sweet

My wheel's the same mate. Unfortunately it's well beyond repair. Holmart sells wheels about $200 cheaper than Holden (I got quotes, Holden is $500 and over depending on which wheel). There is another Holden wholesale seller online but I can't remember the name... I'm sure someone on here will be able to spark the memory :)

Yep, am in Essendon - so not far away. Does mobile detailing? I might need him for that too (for the Monaro) as well as my ride, needs a good doing over. Is he any good (excuse the ignorance)? I'm pretty sure, however, that the wheel is beyond repair.

Will also look at holmart as suggested by others. Will a VY/VZ steering wheel fit the VZ Monaro? I have seen new steering wheels on ebay for a good price, but they are for VY's. (Again, excuse the ignorance.)

Thanks for the info. If I bought the wheel, who would I get to fit it? Holden?

Yeah Holden or any other mechanic would do it... It's probably be cheaper to buy a puller and do it yourself, it's very straight forward :)

Nah, wouldn't do it myself - air bag not an issue? Probably end up making an ar$e of a job of it if I did it myself anyway!! :) Thanks for the info again.

Yep, widely regarded as one of the best in Australia - he was out detailing my future son-in-law's new ute today and said he is currently booked solid (7 days per week!) till the end of January - an indication of how good he is. See finalinspection.com.au for more details and if you have any interest in car care I suggest joining his forum at finalinspection.com.au/forums/

See also http://nvu.com.au/products_show.php?page=1&cat=2 which is probably the other one Evan was thinking of. I am no expert but am 99.9% sure all VT - VZ steering wheels are interchangeable - could be wrong so don't rely on it.

That's your safest (but not cheapest) option as if they somehow set the airbag off you can say they of all people should have known how not to do that.

Thanks Wonky !! If I don't get Damian and replace the wheel all together, just wanted to know what he charges for full detail, ie. how much he charged your son in law as a basic guide?

See http://www.finalinspection.com.au/auto-detailing/exterior-detailing.html

He did a stage 1 on James' car and gives LS1 members 5% discount still I think so I'm sure he charged him $170 but James is absolutely rapt with how it looks!! If you have a look in The Wonkymobile thread in My Ride I have had it detailed twice by Damian (both stage 1s) and when it is just washed and has a coat of OCW on it (5 mins, wipe on/wipe off) it absolutely gleams. See posts #74 and #452 of Australian LS1 and Holden Forums (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=73896) which are before the OCW (Optimum Car Wax).

Damian will need to look at the car to tell you whether it needs a stage 2/3 or even 4 but he is absolutely 100% honest in his assessment! He won't say it needs a stage 3 when it really only needs a stage 2 etc.. In fact I know of a couple of guys on here who for example have had stage 3 details done on where there were a couple of panels that were at stage 4 level so he put in the extra time but still only charged for stage 3. Or spent a couple of hours restoring the headlights and didn't charge for it - he's just a perfectionist!
