Hi all fellow SEQ LS1 folk. If you are looking for something to do on Australia Day why not get out and about on the following Cruise event. Many of you may recall my Queen Mary Falls run in late 2008, this too is looking like a quality event to participate in. I have tried to encompass a bit of everything. Its part of Brisbane Commodores Car Club but is in affect my cruise.

DATE - 26th January 2009 - Australia Day

DESTINATION - SOUTHPORT SPIT

DEPRTURE 0830
• Meet wherever, in the lead up runs to Yatala BP
• Main Departure Point is from Yatala BP @ 8 AM for 8.30 departure
• Turn Right at the first roundabout head under the freeway to the second roundabout
• Head out along Stanmore Rd
• At T Intersection Turn Left
• Proceed along Beaudesert / Beenleigh Rd
• Stop-off at the Pub with the Big Windmill (if enough room for all cars) photo shoot.
• Continue on to Tamborine
• Re-Goup if required
• Head out through town along Tamborine Mountain Rd to North Tamborine
• Turn Left at T intersection
• At North Tamborine the road name becomes Main Western Rd
• At Bartle street there is a small roundabout – continue along Bartle St exit
• Turn/Veer Right at White Rd and follow this into Main Western Rd towards Canungra
• Turn Left at T intersection - Beaudesert Narang Rd
• Follow Beaudesert Narang Rd for a short distance
• Turn Right onto Beechmant Rd
• Continue along this quite steep and twisty rd through Lower Beechmont
• Turn Left at T Intersection (Narang Murwillumbah rd) – Head to Narang
• Continue through Narang and cross the Bridge that crosses over the M1
• Follow Southport Narang Rd through Molendinar to Southport
• Turn Right at T Intersection (Scarborough St)
• Turn Left at next T intersection ( Queen St)
• Turn Right at next Intersection ( Gold Coast Highway)
• Cross the Bridge and Turn left directly once across the Bridge (Waterways Drive)
• Turn Left at Roundabout and proceed along Seaworld Drive to the Southport Spit

It is hoped we can get a shady section somewhere on the southern finger of the spit that form the protection of the boat anchorage

KEY SITES ALONG THE WAY

Mount Tamborine
The charming village of Mount Tamborine lies in the heart of Tamborine Mountain, within coo-ee of nine National Parks. There are delightful homes and gardens, antiques shops, art galleries and tea rooms, or you can take one of the many walking tracks through lush rainforest.

Canungra
Nestled in the foothills of the Lamington National Park lies the magical township of Canungra. Cafes and wineries feature a feast of delights showcasing some of the best local produce in the region has to offer, while paragliding and hang-gliding over the Canungra Valley highlights the spectacular scenery of this luscious region.

You will also discover an unlocked world of hidden beauty, walking trails, cascading waterfalls and breathtaking lookouts that reveal the most extensive subtropical rainforest in the world.

Beechmont
Beechmont is a small country village nestled in between the Lamington Plateau and Tamborine Mountain.

It is a popular destination for bushwalkers who travel through the village to reach the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park. Hangliders and paragliders also frequent the area, with Rosin's Lookout a popular launching point.

I have the "next" one already drawn up and ready to go. This is just a date claimer post to let you know...

Byron Bay - an overnighter.

Will be running SEQ and Northern NSW finest backroads and twisties on the route down to Byron. Then doing a few of the local beach and water activities and sights across Saturday and Sunday; including a probable run to Balina on Sunday - should be a ton of fun all round.

Plenty of drinks, good food, good company and tall stories as part of the evening/overnight stay are a Mandatory of course

Saturday 28th March 2009 AND Sunday 29th March 2009

(I did have it set to go for late February but I already have a whole host of cruise and events activities from now through mid Feb. Hence had to put the Byron overnighter back a bit)

I will post up after the Australia Day one is over.

been told by the owner that it will shut at the end of Feb
some of the staff are very upset as they have mortgages and will loose there jobs
not sure when they will bulldoze but it was always the councils intention to close it :vpo:
they (ron clark) think there is an alcohol problem but will keep the camp ground open

Ah, thats what we can do on the return cruise from Byron Overnighter - divert off the highway and take the beachside coastal roads back as far as Tweed River, then M1 the remainder. I haven't been that way for years.

Pete i hope you don't mind me posting this
but i was a bit boared today so took the car for a spin following this course
i started at logan village instead of yatla but think the distance would be close to the same
was 22 km to the conecting point at the bearded dragon
the directions were very easy to follow, i had a look at the map while reading the directions
and then forgot to take the map anyway

total distance to the spit was just on 100k's and took 1 hour 40 mins
using 12.5 liters of bp ultimate
very nice run looking forward to it

No doubt about it mate you are a gluten for punishment planning consecutive cruises. Have you started a who's coming list yet and if so could you please add my name to it.

I noticed the last run to Queen Mary falls consisted of about 90% drivers only. Is this cruise aimed more at bringing the cheese and kisses along plus any rug rats.

I think it would be great to get our partners involved if at all possible especially as it is an overnighter. Any prelim accommodation sorted out as I guess Aussie Day may be quite hard to get accommodation at the same place especially if we get the type of turn up as last time. If this has been looked at any rough idea on accommodation prices.

If we end up at Tamborine I know of this place that makes the worlds biggest scones with homemade rhubarb jam. I quite often run up there just for the scones. Can’t remember what it is called but it is on the main drag in Tamborine.

the byron run is the overnighter and that is in feb not aus day

on another note pete's seafood on the spit is open on australia day from 12 pm till 7 pm for those that might want some prawns for lunch
but i imagine it will be quite bussy

Yeh Tony bring the family, thats what many do on days such as this.

Just remembering that there are two elements;

1) This thread where we are dong an Australia Day Cruise and Fun in the sun at the Southport Spit.

The new engine should be going into my Calais-V this coming weekend, so all being well it will be prepped and ready for the Australia Day Run.

I will start a whose coming list for the abovementioned tonight.

__________________________________________________ _______________

:)

Then there is the following one (which I have documented and put on Bris Commodores, but not fully posted here yet). It is this Byron Bay event that is the proposed overnighter. I will post all the details up on LS1 after the Australia Day event is over.

Yeh mate, you know me, I have the mountains/twisties rural route down planned, sussed out some beachfront accomodation, which has the option for people to camp and pitch a tent if they want. Got a variety of activities proposed.

And have a great route home using the Costal Sights and Beachfronts route home which is the total opposite type to that of the run down.

I will post a whole nother thread on this in due course.

There are generally a fair few on any cruise that don't turn up, so I'm, figuring that out of the 37 cars nonunated somewhere, we will more likely have 20-25 along

A few of us did this run and ended up at Springbrook last weekend, its sort of slow going because of traffic and stuff as far as Tamborine, but got a lot better from there on (except for two overheat/engine probs that stopped a couple and one tow)

I now have the new engine in the car, just awaiting the ecu to return unlocked.

I will leave the thread live and going till thi coming Saturday and post those said to be coming.

Please, Please, Please, help me out by either fully committing, or a no go by then. Its really hard when people say "maybe" as I actually do a headcount/check prior to departure. But I will rarely go past 10 minutes after the nominated departure time as its not fair on those that have made the effort to turn up on time.

These interesting type events are big numbers of cars to coordinate due to numbers!!!

I will post my phone number when I update on Saturday!!!

Pete

Have just realised that my initial post in this thread was a little misleading. I didn't want to actually commit to anything on this one as I thought I was already 'booked'. It does appear this is the case however this may change so at this stage I have to say I'm a maybe.

Sorry for the confusion

I wont be on the cruise, although I will try and meet up at the Spit. I have had a few things come up that I can't get out of :(

No probs Adam

Guys and gals I will leave the list on the forum as as but change the numbers to reflect 4-6 meet at the spit rather than running the full cruise. Additionally there have been 5 pull out in total but 4 more coming.

That should balance it out with the coupla extras coming as well.

The people doing the catering seem to have it covered (or, so they asure me). I'm not involved in that at all but suppose if they under-estimated a bit they can go get some more of whatever.

:eyes:
I'm pretty miffed at all this rain, I was really looking forward to doing a bit of snorkelling at high tide on the day, but with the run of fresh water it will probably be murky. I'll throw my stuff in anyways, plus a bit of lure fishing gear.

So all in all its looking reasonably well sorted and all good.:)

I'm a definate no show for the cruise. I am helping a mate fit an OTR and going with him whilst he gets a Mafless tune up on the Brizzy northside. We are hoping to make it to the Spit for lunch though in his stato.

Sorry I didn't get there, I got stuck on the Brizzie northside whilst a mates car was being tuned. We got to the spit at 3pm but as we were on the way down (past sea world) we saw quite a few guys from the cruise heading back. I drove around to find some stragglers with no luck. Aaah well there is always the next one :(

I think there were 27 cars in total.

As usual, the initial departure and keeping the entire group together was problematic. But with cars streaching for a few kilometres thats always going to be the case, and as we discovered finding a place to pull over and wait with so many cars in tow is also difficult (hence my passion for two way radios). I was going extermely slow in order to reduce the impact of this - but at least everyone knew the destination...

Seemed weired that it was literally bucketing down rain, then we were in a real thick fog due to the low clouds when up in the mountains, then dropped down to the coast and was hot as hell and sunny.

Thank gawd Pumba and Chippo were at the spit early to save us some space.

Too many people and cars at the Spit location to make the Thong Throw and Cricket Match happen, but geese that beach ball gave us all a workout. The sideshow of the Bogan Mud Puddle held lotsa screams and fun; that poor ricer that was in the wrong place at the wrong time with a 4x4 strutting its stuff LOL.

It was a True Blue Australaia Day event thats for sure.

I stayed on for a few hrs after folk had left; and did the surf followed by prawns for dinner by the waterfront..

All in all a great day.

I will get some pics up soon to add to the rest of em. I haven't even checked em out yet.

Was a great day out, With regards to the shaky start pete, It would have been nice if sombody let us know that we were leaving, My passenger was in the loo and people just started to drive off and I had no idea what was happening, appart from this it was a great day and the rain stayed away right when it mattered.

Main problems for me was I started to following a White SS, with PP that I was sure had parked with us. Then they started going the gold coast and that was but the first of many navigational fubar's.

I can only say it would have been better if it was the same temperature at the spit as it was the top of Tamborrine!
