Probably a little off track for some people but a little advice to all those people that have a potential collector car. Find out as much as you can about it now and keep records / history of it now cause as it gets older it gets a whole lot difficult to get info. Keep a file or what ever you can.
I have an 81837 HQ (To those that don't know it's an original 1971 Model 350 HQ GTS Monaro Coupe). I have spent the last 2 years chasing info on the old girl and each time come to a dead end.
All I'm saying is that in 20 or 30 years time some person will be trying to find as much info on their pride and joy as they can and if there isn't any, it's dam hard to find it, infact close to impossible!!! and it's oh so frustrating:vpo::vpo::vpo:

'71 HQ Monaro 350 Coupe....if you own such a beast, you are indeed a lucky man.
As far as documentation/history is concerned, I couldn't agree more.....I posted on this subject relative to our VZ GTO recently.......I keep EVERYTHING.....Purchase docs, sales infro, Holden/HSV info, my own log etc etc....I keep EVERYTHING!
Cheers, Pickles.

Good on ya Pickles, I know I would much rather buy a car with full history and documentation than not. I am a very lucky man and I have the upmost respect for the classics as well as the later model muscle. With only 402 HQ GTS 350's built, there would not be many left after 37 years thats for sure (Heard of about 10 in my travels) and to me it's about preserving the history and keeping the classics alive for all to enjoy!!!

She is not much to look at presently Michael as she needs a full resto. I've put her into storage for now and I'm going to focus on the SS Torana resto. I'll see if I can find a picture of the shed with them in there before I moved her. I've got so much work to do on these cars, enough for a life time I reckon!! Still, one at a time.

Sorry for taking so long, had to get them into photobucket and didn't have time yesterday. Here they are, again not much to look at and alot of work ahead but they are worth it to me!!!

Won't show the numbers, sorry but they can be ripped off and new plates made these days.
Anyway, so is the thread worth anything now????

The Phot's of the plates were taken prior to purchasing.
The HQ, I am 99.9% sure is a matching body / chassis / plates. No Motor or gearbox unfortunately but does have the original LSD rear. You can see the original Lina Mint colour all over her when I removed the trims etc.

The Torana is an original SS although it isn't the highly collectable L31 (308) version it is an L32 (253, 4speed).

Lots of work for both but on the positive side both of the bodies are in really good condition with not alot of rust repair or panel work to do which is a bonus.
Going to make a rotissorie and restore the Torana first (hopefully learn what not to do on this one) Then tackle the HQ.

The HQ will be restore back to factory spec as she roled off the line at Sydney. The Torana on the other hand will be my toy, although I'm not going to modify the body in any way to keep the possibility of returning it to factory spec at a later date, I am thinking of a New Shafiroff built motor ex USA to put in her.

very good points Daryn.

dad has a LX 4door SLR5000 that came out in the rare tuxedo black with silver.
he has been chasing its history including its race pedegree.
guys like Ken Scott raced it etc.

shame he is gonna sell it as he has mountains of paperwork on its history...if i had the money i would buy it off him and hand it to a panel beater mate to work on it slowly over 12-18months to strip it, back to bare metal and paint it in original form and bring it up like new...just no money :(

Nice mate!!! Yeah To me it's about saving the history as much as restoring the car. When I got my license they were everywhere (yeah showing my age), now you barely see one and it's only on a fine summers Sunday!!! I would save em all if I had the dough to!!!! Have PM'd you. :goodjob:

Can't you write to GMH with the tag numbers for verification? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Not quite that simple and they don't give much info about the car either. To get the info you need the plate details as well as the year and month of manufactor. I did it for the Torana but the HQ was an export car that doesn't have the all important Aus Compliance plate with the manufactured date on it so i'm screwed.
There is two types of history as well. The obvious one your talking about is the factory spec details for the car like options it came out with and codes etc etc etc. The other is the history post assembly, I know it went to NZ but thats it, would love to build that side of the history up until I bought it!

Thats what I'm getting at, it would have been great to buy it with a folder full of details about what the car has been up to for the last 38 years. I just find it interesting, thats all.

I wish it was as easy as you thought but thanks for your response anyway.

mate don't mean to burst your bubble
but if you don't have matching body/chassis/engine numbers
there is no way vicroads will re register the car.long story short vicroads dont have any records over more then 10yrs on un rego'd cars they go off a sheet so if they look at hq and say the eng number doesent have a starting prefix from there sheet then your ****ed they wont touch it.
keep us updated on this project:) and good luck with it all

we just re registered dad's HQ GTS Coupe middle of last year after it had been in the shed for the past 20yrs.

Bummer for all those in Victoria, Lucky I live in W.A. that coupled with the fact I imported it from NZ might be my saving grace. I don't think W.A rules are the same but since you mentioned it I might look into it. Thanks for the heads up. i am fortunate enough to have the previous registration details from NZ that has the engine number on it although I know it wasn't the original engine.
Will keep posted on progress but for now the old Q car will have to sit and wait her turn. I bet the old man is stoked to have his Q on the road?:goodjob:

you'll be fine then:)
and yeah the old man likes taking the q out for a Sunday drive.
only reason i mentioned that is alot of people like to buy H series stuff and chop and change stuff now days with vic roads if the numbers don't match don't even bother trying, your better off buying something with rego already

Many Thanks for posting the pics Mate! :goodjob:

Truly a very nice find with the cars. I do hope that you are able to find all the parts for the cars, sometimes this can prove to be challenging. Deep pockets also helps at times also.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks Steve, Yeah parts are getting harder with the HQ Coupe, starting to see some ridiculus prices being paid for stuff. Pockets aren't that deep at the moment, but I'll soldier on.
