Has anyone in the Melbourne area had trouble buying BP Ultimate recently?

Heaps of servos around the SE suburbs have no Ultimate :(

Anyone know who is still selling it ATM?

Cheers :)

Yep i have had trouble over the last 2 weeks around the Bayswater/ Bayswater North area trying to get Ultimate! my last resort would be to use other brands (filled up my car with BP Ultimate pretty much 99% of the time since i started driving).

Yeah I've tried three BP servo's in SE Melbourne, Pakenham,Berwick and Hampton Park and there all out of BP Ultimate, so I'm going to try a tank of Vpower and see how we go.
I've only ever used BP Ultimate on my ute so it will be interesting to see how Vpower rates against BP Ultimate.

I went to Longwarry North this morning and they were out...:vpo:

BP Pakenham eastbound had it at lunchtime, dunno about BP westbound though.

Mobil Synergy 8000 is usually available in Officer, failing that. I don't even know where I could get Caltex - no servos of that name out my way.

I understand the Caltex refinery in Qld was shutdown due to a boiler explosion a few weeks ago. This means that all fuel will need to be transported in from other refineries. It’s not easy to arrange to import fuel at shot notice, and I believe that fuel that was destined for the Melb market has been diverted to Qld.

Yeah was out and about today, and still could not find one BP servo with Ultimate :(

Got a bit under 1/2 tank atm so I'll hang on for a while.

I live in Central Queensland and havent been able to get BP ultimate for about 2-3 weeks now at least. I heard the same story about the Caltex refinery from one of the guys working at the BP servo. The only other 98 octane fuel out of the bowser where I live is Shell V Power so I dont have a choice at the moment really.

Havent been given any indication of how long this is going to go on for.

Mobil's 98 RON is the next best option as far as MON, then Caltex, with Shell V-Poo is a last resort IMO.

The most common type of octane rating worldwide is the Research Octane Number (RON). RON is determined by running the fuel in a test engine with a variable compression ratio under controlled conditions, and comparing the results with those for mixtures of iso-octane and n-heptane.

There is another type of octane rating, called Motor Octane Number (MON) or the aviation lean octane rating, which is a better measure of how the fuel behaves when under load. MON testing uses a similar test engine to that used in RON testing, but with a preheated fuel mixture, a higher engine speed, and variable ignition timing to further stress the fuel's knock resistance. Depending on the composition of the fuel, the MON of a modern gasoline will be about 8 to 10 points lower than the RON. Normally fuel specifications require both a minimum RON and a minimum MON.

In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane rating, shown on the pump, is the RON, but in the United States, Canada and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2.

p.s i just drove over 4000 ki's to brisbane (up the newell) and back via the coast, and had no probs buying ultimate except for Batemans Bay, used 95 vortex and a trusty bottle of octane boost. and one tank of vortex98 when i miscaculated

The cause of the shortage is simply supply and demand.
There has been an increased demand for the Ultimate and Regular Unleaded
fuels and the refinery has not been able to keep up with this demand.
BP is doing everything possible to get supply to all BP sites as soon as
possible and apologise for any inconvenience.

Ooops you let the cat out of the bag .... BP has 2 refineries in Australia, Kwinanna and Brisbane.

The funny thing in this thread is some people have actually bagged the fuel they use without knowing it. Because it comes out of a different coloured bowser doesn't meant anything.

Caltex currently still has a cracker down so that going to affect supply of 98 fuel in some areas.

There are only 7 refineries in Australia in total and they don't transport much fuel at all interstate .

Currently there is lots of fuel being imported from Singapore due to refining capacity being down to 5 1/2 refineries atm.

If for instance BP comes from the Caltex refinery, do BP have their own additive package added or is it just the same fuel as the Caltex?

I'd be a bit wary buying Ultimate at the moment, with them constantly running out you might be the unlucky one to buy the last tankful before they run out, who knows what you might end up with, maybe like the guy in the other thread who got crud through his entire fuel system. I actually followed the tanker into this servo yesterday, went in and asked the attendant if that was ultimate being delivered.. he said no :vpo: they have been out for two weeks.. so anyway I go upto the driver of the tanker and have a chat about the 'lack' of ultimate.. he said "nah mate I got 8000 litres of it im putting in right now" So I think cool, hang around for a while until he finishes then proceed to fill up.. He told me he gets this FUEL from MOBIL DEPO! I'm like wtf.. he said yep they are the same fuel as Mobil 8000 except there is a different additive in it to change the colour.. hmmm

The next thing I notice was the price of it.. it was 14c per litre more... used to be 12 I think.. anyway I go back in and ask if I have been overcharged and he told me the price has gone up again... it's now officially 14c per litre more expensive than standard.. thieves :flipoff:

At 14c a litre more expensive for an untuned car you would have to ask is it worth the extra cost that is $10.50 a tank dearer. I might drop back to the 95octane.
