View Full Version : Has anyone developed aftermarket VE Engine Covers??

I'm just seeing if anyone knows of any company who develops aftermarket engien covers for the L98. I've tried to fit the L76 twin engine cover but it doesnt fit without extreme modifying.
At the moment I have removed the single peice turtle shell but it looks too 'bare' to me. I would love some split covers to neaten up the bay a bit. Especially with that heater hose running on top of the manifold... lol.
Thanks

Grab yourself some VZ ones... From the L76 (6ltr)
They where split covers, and with a little work with your favorite cutting tool (to allow the heater hoses to come through) you'll you some split covers..
If you get really creative - you can even paint them like some forum members have done.. I just left mine silver (to match my car), and 'coloured' in the 6 LITRE in red...
Hope this helps..

Have tried the L76 covers and with a lot of cutting they seemed to *fit* (just) put keep 'popping' off after about 5 mins....
It seems there is a plastic cover on the inlet manifold under the fuel rail which stops them sitting flush....

Yes, the 2 piece L76 covers from VZ fitted the L76 intake manifold. The L76 intake got superceded with the LS3 intake which has an added beauty/noise cover.
Also the VE heater hoses now run partially under the drivers side cover.
If you dont have the 4x bottom locating studs on the valve covers, you need those too.
It's not that difficult to make the VZ covers fit VE.

How did you get that cover off without removing the fuel rail?
You can't without breaking the 4 feet off the beauty cover.
It's not difficult to undo 4 bolts and lift the fuelrail an inch to sneak the feet out. You just have to be careful with the injector Orings.

I started doing this job on mine over the weekend, but it seems to me that I will need to cut off a lot more of the rear part of the driver's side cover than you did - I can't see how I can fit the heater hoses between the locating clip and the part of the cover that sits on the manifold.

Doesn't take much work to convert the 6.0 Liter L76 covers to fit.

Also save a bit of money and don't buy the holdne bolts to support the edges but go to Bunnings speed shop and buy 4 bolts (forgot the size sorry)

Gday all,
Would i be right in saying you have to remove the valley cover plastic heat shield in order to fit the vz splits?

Just remove the turtle shell, trim the split cover to allow the heater hose clearance, add the 4 bolts and clip them on. Simple as that

I want to fit the VZ covers to my VE which has a beauty cover. Does this mean there are to types of engine covers fot the VZ's to suit the different manifolds (L76 vs LS3) or does my beauty cover bsolutely have to go??????
Do the covers come with rubber retainers (Part# 24453627) to fit the covers to the studs or do I also need to source these also???
Any help on the matter would be much appreciated.

I want to fit these VZ covers to my VE. If the L76 had two types of manifolds (L76 vs LS3) , one without a beauty cover and one with, does this mean the covers are different?? If so, which ones do I get?
Do my beauty covers over the intake manifold need to go as part of fitting them or not?
I understand I will need to source 4 Replacement rubber retainers (Part# 24453627) and 4 Raplacement studs (Part# 11609319). Is this right??

If you want 2 piece engine covers from Holden then VZ 6.0 covers are your only choice.
Yes they come with the 4 rubbers underneath.
The VZ 2 piece covers will not sit down properly if you have the LS3 beauty/noise cover fitted on top of your intake.
Remove this from above the LS3 intake

The genuine Holden covers from the 6 liter VE fit well but you do have to remove the false inlet manifols cover and the thich rubber molding under that. Tis is very simple to do just be carefull. Also make sure you get a price for the bolts / studs required (the same as in post by VX 300 on the 27 Dec 09).
On both of the VE's I fitted these covers to I used the Bunnings speed shop bolts. The ones I used are 50mm long by 6mm metal thread screws and they even come in a pack of 4. They even have a type of rounded head on them which does up with a phillips head screwdriver. I have had no problems with them and they have been on the VE SS sedan for about 3 years and have not come loose in that time. I can't remember the price but am pretty sure they were only a couple of dollars. Do the job nicely and heaps cheaper.
If you can't find them on the shelf the bar code number from the packaging is
9 314453091951 and the makers name is ROMAK
One more thing. I don't remember the price of the covers now but what used to be a very cheap mod is now bloody expensive. Has anyone bought a pair lately and can they share the price with us.

I bought one recently to replace one I messed up slightly when trying to paint it (I'm a perfectionist). Can't remember the exact price but do remember thinking it was close to double what they used to be. The original supplier went bust so for ages you couldn't get them until Holden arranged another supplier. The new supplier knew they had Holden over a barrel so upped the price. :(

WHAT about a nice billet set ??
if $400 for the plastic ones is OUT rages
I have a set of the SVE ones and yes, $400 is a little steep. However, they are the best fitting and looking covers I have seen out there so far. No modifications needed at all and they sit perfectly. I have seen the results after fitment of some of the cheaper ones on ebay and they dont sit flush.
In my opinion only, I pay $60,000 plus for a car I want the covers to look as good as possible, for a measly couple of hundred more than some others its money well spent. Again, my opinion only and I am very happy with the results.

This thread was fantastic info.
I ordered some VZ covers from the local dealer about 2 weeks ago and was told thay would be here next day.
Holden must have run out of them again so delivery has now drawn out to them arriving late February (another 3-4 weeks!! after a new shipment arrives.
I was told the price will be about $300 + the domed bolts (about $6 each).
Then painting in Heron White (like Wonky's) will, be about $250 for baked 2-pack.
Phew!! It will end up costing about $600 including re-routing the heater hoses - but worth it I reckon!
Now to wait for delivery!

No they never received the long awaited batch.
Do not put any faith in the ridiculous computer generated dates they give for backorders. As an ETA passes a gimp pushes a button and another random ETA date appears.
eg:The VZ 6.0 covers had a new ETA every 2 weeks from March 2009 until about October 2009.

Just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to AussieTone and Wonky. I don't know these guys apart from on the forum and thay have been a fantastic help!!
As I previously posted I have had problems with delivery by Holden of some VZ engine covers (delayed from the promised "next day" to about 2 months). Also the price is now HUGE - $334 including tax.
Within a day or so of me posting about this problem AussieTone and then Wonky both had managed to purchase some covers more cheaply for me and offerred to get them to me. This was a huge favour - thanks guys!
In the end AussieTone (only because he contacted me by PM first) posted some covers to me and saved me over $100 including postage.
I think both guys still have covers for sale if you need them. I reckon go-for-it even if you were planning to wait. The recommended retail price is getting out of hand!
Now to get them painted. I have also purchased some Aluminium billet caps for the engine bay, so will post some picks when its all together in a couple of weeks (I hope).

You are more than welcome. My belief is that this is what the forum is for. Members helping each other out with info and if we have a contact in the industry and can buy the parts cheaper then why not do it to help others out. Holden make enough money out of us when we buy a car and in my case, even though I can buy cheap parts I gurantee they are still making money on the sale. Mine cost $160 in gelcoatvand my spray painter charged me about $50 to prep and paint. The result is awesome. I really like the walkinshaw ones but I can't comprehend spending $500 on engine covers. The SS Inductions ones look really good too but they cost $400
this whole game gets out of hand sometimes. I mean how much is Holden now charging for their single engine covers? Lots more than they used to from what I gather

About double what they used to but that's because the original supplier went out of business. In order to find a new supplier Holden were obviously held over a barrel on cost so the price correspondingly went up to the public too.

Weird.
Have a look at all these though. I have seen the $300 from AVE that you are talking about. They had 'SS' embossed in them. There is a chev set in this list below for $190. Mine were just plain and unpainted.

Roto-Fab in USA do some CF covers for Pontiac G8-GT which would bolt straight onto the 6 litre in a VE.

I've got the Roto-Fab aluminum covers and powdercoated them candy blue to match the car. I got mine off of ebay so I didn't pay quite that much for them, powdercoating actually cost more. If you keep your eye out, they occasionally pop up on ebay. Here's a pic of mine. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made so far. They really set off the engine compartment.

You're posting links to attachments hosted on another forum. The pictures are only visible to those registered and logged into that forum. They would have their forum set up like this to stop people stealing their bandwidth by linking to them from elsewhere.
You'll need to host the images to your own image host (e.g. photobucket). There is a sticky tutorial thread in the Help and Feedback section of these forums to assist you with doing this

No they're Corvette design covers passed off as being G8-GT covers, the Corvette fuel line comes in thru that slot.

The Holden original twin covers have a raised section molded in that area to clear something (no idea what and maybe a carry over from the L76 engine) see pic of Wonkies at post 37 of this thread

There is.... but i didnt save the full size pic so it is miniture.... and i cant find the site anymore.... but pretty much there is another shot from front on... and it looks very similar to badseeds pics.... except there is not as much of the cover 'downturning' into the intake manifold.
i was thinking, to hide the cables/tubes over the throttle body, you could leave the v8 logo on the stock cover.... that should cover them up.
also, because the stock cover goes far enough back to under the windshield, if you absolutely had to, you could probably leave a little peice there too (if you were keeping the v8 logo) for handling purposes
anyway, i go0gled something like "modified G8 6.0 engine cover"
but i went into so many sites.... im not sure which one it is in.:)

did mine this morning...
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p147/ozvette87/SNC00063.jpg
just a phone pic of when i was fitting, so they are a little out of whack... as you can see.... but you get the idea...
the left hand cover doesnt need studs to keep it from rotating down, but the right cover needs at least 1 stud... there are 3 fuel rail clips under the right side, but they are not enough to stop the rotation down.... i just put 1 bolt i had lying round in the shed, in the second threaded hole in from the front of the engine, seems to have stopped any movement in the cover.
leaving the 'V8' symbol in the middle (and a portion of the middle section up the back) would have stopped the covers moving, but it just didnt look quite right to me... even though it did cover to piping over the throttle body.
well, maybe next weekend if i get a minute (and is not muggy as hell) ill put an a lick of paint.:)

Got my VZ engine covers from AusieTone about a month ago, but been flat at work so only just getting organised.
I bought the 4 original support studs (see photo in post no. 4 of this thread). They are called "Stud Intake Manifold" (part no 11609319) and were $17 each!! Had to be sourced elaewhere which took 3 weeks.
I reckon AussieTone's idea of getting bolts from Bunnings is good. If you wanted to, it would be easy to "dome" the head a bit with a file.
Also the VK V8 heater hoses were $17.50 each which is pretty good. Apparently they are becoming rare in holden stock and had to be sourced from another dealer iner-state. I know they are also available at after-market places.
Now to get the covers painted before fitting them!!

to answer your earlier question about the alloy v8 writing.... must have the cover like mine which does not have it.... and the centre 6.0 on yours actually says V8 on the cover i got.
