(BTW Sorry for all the pics, I couldn't choose between them)

Cheers for all the kind words guys.

I'm absolutely stoked with it as you can imagine. When I see the pics of it from when we first went to see it, even I can't believe how much its changed!

I'm still unsure whether or not I should put the small 6.0L V8 badges on the bottom of the front guards like it is supposed to have. What do you think?

yeah i would and how about some ss badges ?

yeh i think i will get some, only $12 from holden. I have the SS badge on the tailgate but on the thunders they don't usually have them on the side, instead they have thunder about halfway up the quarter. I want it to look clean though so i think i'll just get the 6.0L ones and leave it at that.

Cheers,
Tim

I've said it before mate but i'll say it again....very nice ute after a great recon.

In terms of the 6L badges.....I'd put them on but i like the badges including the holden and SS ones so i maybe biased there.

cheers for the comments guys. Although some people dont like driving damaged cars. In this case it looked a lot worse than it was. The chassis was completely untouched as it was up on the autorobot and was measured up. The quarter panel and fender wasn't even damaged enough to touch the supporting frame behind each of them. so essentially for those parts it was just panel damage.

So technically it was not really that bad. The owner just wanted to get rid of it and since their insurance wouldn't cover it due to reckless driving and DUI we managed to get it for an absolute steal!

If only i could find myself a steal like this....i could buy it, get my uncle and buddy Sam to fix it in their shop, spray it next door and it wouldn't cost me much more than the selling price of my current commo....great purchase mate :goodjob:

from august 06 they started using the L98. These utes were being produced when the VE Sedans came out. It would be strange for them to use the L98 in the VE and the L76 in the utes when they are almost the same minus DoD.

very bloody nice Tim. I seem to recall on quite a few occasions you spewing about not being able to go on cruises with your car cos it was still getting sorted. All worth it now though hey.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the cruise this weekend.

Nice car, and a very good advertisment of the quality workmanship by you and your old man.

Time to get those k's up now.

Enjoy.

Cheers Frank,

I'm looking forward to the cruise this weekend. Should be good going out for a long run with the new ute. It had 9,700kms on it when i first bought it and now it has about 11,400kms. I did an oil change at 10,000kms and used Edge 10w60. The engine is soo quite and smooth!

I could sell this and would probably make a few bucks but not this time. This one is a keeper at least until I have finished uni and get a stable, good job. Really the only model above it bar HSV is the VE and I much prefer driving mine to my old mans SSV :)

I had my ute run up on a dyno today.

Pretty happy with the results. It made 252.58RWKW & 486.70Nm or 338.72HP & 358.97 ft-lbs.

Does that sound about right for this model with the current mods?

Does that sound about right for this model with the current mods?

Cheers,
Tim

Sounds to be about right if not a little high?

Anyway as long as your happy with the way it drives the rwkw is just a figure.

hmm i would take mine over my old mans any day

seats are a LOT more comfortable and better looking, the dash layout is much nicer, metal tray rather than plastic liner, better brakes, better clutch feel, better overall look inside the cabin....

the only thing i find better about his is the steering and the ride smoothness.

BTW go the ute, they are soo much better. I might be a bit biased though...

I noticed you have 6000k HID's, had any trouble with them? I gave up with mine...I just took out the 6000k ones and put the 4300k ones in and it seems to be much better light, the adjustment still puzzles me!

Also what parkers are you using?

Cheers Mate,

Yeah the adjustment just doesn't work as you cant do anything about the kick up which is part of the headlight design I have just set mine up as best as I can. So far I have not had another road user gesture me to say that they are glarey so until that happens they are staying in. However I don't have any of that patchiness as you described where there were parts with no light etc.

My park lights in the photos I took above are identical to THESE (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2x-T10-168-194-Refractor-Xenon-White-5-LED-Wedge-Bulbs_W0QQitemZ230332112910QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_C ar_Parts_Accessories?hash=item230332112910&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318) ones. However the photos I originally took on the first page were the same as THESE (http://www.auraxt.com.au/t10s6.html) ones.

Not a great deal of difference in the colour of each as you can see if you compare the photos however I have found from experience with my last ute that the normal globes like the ones I linked are a LOT more reliable than LEDs. I had heaps of LEDs fail on me with my last car. The only reason I have these in there now was because they wouldn't fit in my last car so I thought I might as well use them as they are brand new. If they fail I will put the other globes back in but if they work well, hey, they can stay there.

Cheers guys.

Next month I am changing the shockies and struts over to some Monroe GT Gas ones. Was going to get Konis but @ $721 compared to $332 I couldn't justify the difference.

I would like to get some HD Whiteline sway bars but I'll have to see.

I got off my arse and put my KD-AVX44 H/U in about two months ago which I will get some pics of. Now I need to buy some new speakers so I can fit my sub and amp as well.

Other than that there isn't much else on the cards at the moment. Supposed to be saving for a trip to Europe in September so I can't really afford to be spending money on it.

Im yet to scrap anything. I was under the impression that it was usually either the extractor flanges or the cats that scraped. Being that I have short 4>1s and the cats are mounted up near the firewall I have not had a problem. In saying that I have no idea how close it is getting to things. I would imagine that it gets very close at times. I am at Uni atm but i'll take a photo and post it up later when i'm home.

On another note... I purchased a 50W HID Kit for my High beam yesterday. Am going to mount the ballasts on the bumper reo. Will post up pics when they arrive.

Well got my 50W HIDs in my high beam and WOW  they are sooo bright its insane.

Going on a track day next friday so on wednesday in the week just gone I bought some new rear tyres for my ute. Knowing they are going to get a hard time I didn't spend big this time around. Ended up with some Maxxis MA-V1s for $160ea fitted for 235/40R18. Am getting Toyo Proxxes 4 next time for $208ea fitted.

Also bought a full set of Monroe GT Sport short shocks and struts during the week. Fitted the rears yesterday and fitted the fronts today. Very happy with them. They have made it ride a fair bit different. Feels smoother when going over bumps in the road at cruising speed and also holds better when cornering hard. Well worth the money. Only paid $329 for the full set. 2 shockies, 2 struts.

Also did an oil change today. just over 5000km since my last one. So as usual I used some 10w60 Castrol edge and the engine sounds nice and smooth still.

So all up my car has seen a few upgrades this week and im happy with all of them.

Will try and get some pictures of the HIDs up tonight.

Cheers,
Tim

Well after some inspiration from another members thread RE: footwell lighting I was browsing ebay, as I do, and came across some adhesive backed flexible white LED strips so I thought why not?? They are switched with the interior light so they work with the door switches and timers etc. Overall im very happy with the result and think they look quite good. All up they cost me under $16.

Cheers for the comments mate. I don't use anything special. Just DODO Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo, Autogylm Super Resin Polish (if it needs it), Liquid Flash Wax and Meguairs Ultimate Quik Detailer. With good quality microfibre cloths, mitt etc. Interior is Zaino Kit for the leather and 303 Products protectant and cleaner. All of which can be found on the Car Care Products sponsors website.

I stole the interior light idea of someone else on here except his were on all the time which I didnt want. Mine only activate with the interior lighting. I would encourage anyone and everyone to try it. For $16 it makes it look a ton better.

The LEDs I used can be found HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2x-White-15-LED-30cm-Under-Car-Flexible-Strip-Light_W0QQitemZ280364507761QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_C ar_Parts_Accessories?hash=item414706e271&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294 %3A50)

Well I had a pretty successful day today!!

Bought a Davies Craig Trans cooler last week to use as a Power Steering cooler after a small heat issue at the last track day. So with a couple of extra pairs of hands and some spare time we got to it.

Evan (Evman) and a mate came over to give me a hand and it worked out perfect. The kit was supplied with 1m 3/8" hose, taped foam buffers and mounting ties. We used some mudgaurd washers to pack it away from the curves in the stock brackets and bought some M6 bolts and Nyloc washers. We put a foam interface between the core and the washers and bolted it through the core to the stock mounting holes. I also sprayed it with a light coat of black acrylic so it didn't stand out. Then flushed the system with some cheap valvoline DIII fluid and re-bled with some Castrol Transmax Z.

Cheers,
Tim

I wasn't aware that the rims were from different series. I thought they were just chosen as an option.

Well went to the track again on Friday. Absolutely stoked with how it went. I had the front tyres replaced with Toyo Proxes 4s last Friday and they performed FAR better than I expected. Much better than the RE040s that were on it last time. The power steering cooler did it's job. No problems like I had last time which was nice! I got some good footage from outside cameras and in car views which I will post up when my mate finishes editing them.

was tub liner standard on thunders ?
i see 2006 models all have tub liners but the some of the 2007's don't

Hey hey good work Tim! There's only 2 things you need now mate... A 224/228 SQP cam and a twin 3" exhaust haha. Keep the vids coming champ :goodjob:

Cheers Evan. Those two things are definitely on the cards for when I get back from my trip. The track day was soo good I would have asked you n Dean but there were no spots left. They limit it so you can get a good amount of time on the track and all the spots were taken by club members and family. Will have to see next time.

G'day

Haven't updated this thread in ages, mainly because there has been nothing to update about. The ute is still going fantastic and still brings a smile to my face! I fitted some Ballistic Racing Cats and that has been about it. However I bought a digital TV tuner for it off the net and thought that the screen on my old H/U was a bit small. So a quick trip to JB and I picked up a Pioneer AVH-P4150DVD for $800. Absolutely love it!!! There are a couple of things I need to button up still, because of the unit only having one remote I have split the line to the aerial and run it to the centre console where I am going to put a small push button switch. I very rarely use the radio so having the aerial up all the time was annoying. I am also going to sand the texture off the fascia surround and paint it with 2-pack in the same colour as the dash. Enjoy the pics!

Never thought of that! That's a great idea, would looks very schmick!

How are the Ballistic Cats in comparison to your old cats? Sound, much more power etc. I have them on my ute, but can't really comment on them because I've never had any other brand of cats apart from the stockers.

Cheers Michael,

I got two small dents on my roof and a small one on my bonnet. Bit pissed off but just glad I didn't get damage like some people did!!! The guy that rolled into me only left a few small bits of red paint on my bumper, a machine buff got them out so it was not worth the hassle of chasing him for anything.

On another note Evan, you see how my new 2-din surround is textured and not the same colour as the climate control panel above (its an Aerpro one)? I have sanded all the texture off with 800/1200 and am going to paint it in 2-pack sometime this week. I wasn't sure if yours was like this or not? If you are in Perth atm and wanted to you could sand yours and my old man will paint them both this week? Send me a txt if u are keen because I will hold off on painting mine...

I don't know who would do the gauges for ya. Maybe Audio Image, they did Evan's (Evman) car audio and did some neat stuff with fibreglass.

I installed everything in my car myself. I had already done the amp, sub, splits and they were running of my old DVD unit so this was a piece of cake.

Apparently not. It depends on the unit you get. Prior to this one I had a JVC KD-AVX44 which had a remote lead and a power antenna lead. This meant that it only went up with the radio. Apparently all Pioneer units only have 1 remote lead which means that u have to split it to run an amp and power antenna and the aerial comes up whenever the unit is on which doesn't suit me as I very rarely listen to the radio. So I split the cable going to the aerial and put a little rocker switch in my centre console as you can see in the picture. Looks alright to me, its out of the way and it won't get used much anyway. Plus I can always remove it and replace that cap and no one would ever know.

Cheers,
Tim

The surround is all prepped ready for paint. I went through the solids colour sample file today and found a good match. Mixed it up and added some flatting base to match the plastic finish and had a look. Seems perfect. Dad is going to spray it in the morning for me so we will see how it turns out. If it needs some adjustment i will just mix up some more and check again. I will post some pics when its done.

Well I got the finish absolutely perfect. Exact amount of flatting base but I mixed the colour a shade wrong. In the sunlight its slightly too black :( It's fine when its not in direct sunlight, you can't tell the difference but I know it is so in the next couple of weeks I will try some more colour and paint it again.

Well, nothing major but my front brake pads were getting on a bit so I decided to get a new set and thought I might as well do the rotors at the same time since I wanted to and its easier whilst everything is off.

Ended up with some DBA4000 Series 6x6 wiper slot rotors and EBC Redstuff pads. Cost $549 all up which I didn't think was bad considering the premium you have to pay for aftermarket bits for the C6 setup over the standard holden setup.

First impressions are this setup shits on the standard rotor/pad combo. Heaps more bite at cold and they only get better with some heat in them. EBC state that they will continue to get better until they are fully bed in which is around 1600kms according to them.

On another note the ute is almost at 30,000kms :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:

No worries.

I did some research and found PBR do them so I might look into the price of theirs...

Also going to get some PBR Racing Fluid i think for the brakes. Seemed to have the highest boiling temperature out of penrite SIN and Castrol Response super DOT 4.

Umm few more plans on the list.

- Same pad/rotor upgrade for rear brakes.
- Change all brake lines to teflon/braided ones.
- Some SuperPro bushes in certain places
- Maybe H/D sway bars
- 3.9 Diff gears
- Cam/Updated tune
- Catch can

But i'm only able to work two days a week atm because i'm at uni m,t,t,f which means progress is slow. But it will eventually get there.

Went on my third track day. Had an absolute blast again. Best $70 I have spent. Didn't manage to get the tyres in time which was a shame because my tyres at the time were absolutely rooted and grip was a big problem. The brake upgrade I did proved worthy of the $$$ I spent. Was very happy with the performance benefits over the stock rotor/pad setup.

Here are a few of vids from the day. I also got a good shot looking forwards underneath the rear of the car using the GoPro camera. Can see the diff/drive shafts/rear wheels etc. Interesting to see everything moving. Needs editing before uploading though.

Make sure u select 1080p for the first two. Looks heaps better.

No hard driving (or much driving at all really) in between yet the oil came out all nice metallic again :( The old stuff came out very dark and veeery metallicy

Shifting much better already. Even with the cheap DexIII there was an improvement  I think I've spent close to $300 in oil in the last few weeks

Well I had new tint put on yesterday at TKO Tinting who I would happily recommend to anyone. Ended up with 16% on sides and 10% on the rear. My Elite Catch Can arrived a couple of days ago so I fitted that up also.

Here are a few pics after a quick wash today. The old girl scrubs up alright considering it hasn't been waxed in about 2 months and is left outside 24/7.

Cheers,
Tim

I think the cover is great. I definitely wouldn't say it has cured the axle tramp but I believe it has certainly helped with some of it. However the biggest positive for me was the increase in oil volume that the cover provides. Plus it looks cool driving behind it

Well its been a while but the ute has received a couple of small additions.

Last Friday with the help of Evan (Evman), we swapped out the front sway bar for a Whiteline 30mm blade adjustable type, Whiteline rose jointed sway bar links, Whiteline 20mm rear sway bar, SuperPro rear sway bar link bushes and SuperPro rear subframe bushes. Stoked with the outcome, sits a lot flatter in corners now and can be pushed much harder. I will try and get some pics up of the bits and pieces when I can.

Then today my battery decided to just stop working whilst my car was parked. Testing proved it to be faulty so I swapped that out for an Optima D35 Yellow Top which I am very happy with. Got it for $277 incl GST which I think is quite a good price.

I have some Redstuff brake pads on their way, am about to order some DBA 4000 series slotted rotors for the rear to match the ones on the front and then grab a set of braided lines.

Tyres will be due for replacement soon. I think I have settled on Yokohama Neova AD08s in 245/40R18. I am led to believe that nothing else really comes close for dry weather grip? Thoughts?

Cheers,
Tim

How is it with the new sway bars mate?

Loving them!! The turn in at speed is MUCH better, sits flatter around high speed long curves, gets less of a "rock" going through tight chicane type set ups. Although I haven't been able to test them out properly yet. Next track day is at the beginning of May so I will be able to make a good comparison then.

Only downside of what I have done is the increased road noise and harshness when the wheels are on uneven surfaces. That is mainly due to the "race only" rear subframe bushes and the sway bars don't want to twist as much on our shit quality road surfaces so it feels a lot harder.

G'day Tim,

Just got through reading the thread on your Ute from beginning to end - well done :goodjob:

It sure does provide me with some ideas for my own, and sort of similar, Ute which is Phantom Mica 2005 VZ SS LS1 Auto, with black and red leather trim. I have only just bought mine and it had 75000km on the clock and, while it's in pretty good nick, it does have a few small dents and blemishes.

If you're ever over on the east coast without your Ute and at a loss of what to do with yourself, you're more than welcome to detail my Ute :)

Cheers, Pete

P.S. What are you studying at Uni? Way back in the early 1980s when I was doing my Engineering degree at Sydney Uni, I bought my first car - a 1955 Chevrolet Sedan. It was a bit of a lemon but, over time and a lot of effort, it turned out to be my pride and joy.

Another small update.

Had some braided lines installed in the ute last week. Absolutely rapped with them. The pedal feel is soo much better, it is much firmer now, no spongy feeling like before. Managed to score two free bottles of MOTUL RBF-660 fluid from Repco. Long story short, my order for RBF-600 was screwed up and the car was booked in that arvo and there was no fluid at any repco in the state.

I also have a full set of EBC Reds here to go in, just holding out a bit longer as the existing ones aren't completely stuffed yet, but I want the new ones in for the track day in June.

Also, after reading the T56 oil thread on here I decided to give the Penrite 70 Manual gear oil a try. Has been over a week now and am very happy with it. Gearbox feels smoother, less notchy on the shifts and its a bit quieter.

Cheers,
Tim

Well time for a small update.

Had a Eaton Tru-Trac fitted today by John at Street Quick Performance. Once again second to none service from John and I am wrapped with the diff!

Soo much smoother than the old one, no noises and feels like it drives better out of corners. Yet to really get into it as I am going to let it have a few heat cycles first.

My seat mounts are on the way and I hope to have my Sparco Pro 2000 fitted in the next couple of weeks. Will get pics of this when it goes in.

Well the ute has had a few upgrades recently. Started with an Eaton Tru-trac which was fitted by John at Street Quick Performance. Then it went back and had a custom mafless tune done and at the same time I got a VCM Performance aluminium OTR fitted. I the fitted my Sparco Pro 2000 race seat and finally on the weekend just gone, with the help of Evan (well actually he did more than I did) we gave the car a 3 stage polish using the Menzerna kit on a Das6 and then gave it three coats of Optiseal sealant and finally some wax. Came up mint! Not bad for a 2006 ute! Here are a couple of pics...

Oh and BTW I am going to be selling my old DUSpeed OTR if anyone is interested.

Hey mate. I have got a Whiteline 30mm adjustable on the front and a 20mm non-adjustable on the rear. I bought them supply only from WA Suspensions and fitted them up myself. The front one is a shit of a thing to put in but with two people and some careful lowering of the engine/k-frame it can be done.

I went the 20mm because I knew I wouldn't adjust the rear one. I have played around with the front one and do use different setups depending on weather like I run it softer during winter because of the wet roads etc. because it likes to understeer with the front stiffened. The 18mm might be plenty in a ute anyway, I wouldn't know as I have never tried one. Check out this picture... as you can see the driveway isn't exactly steep...

Wow that is a quality installation there Tim. Looks like you even superglued the ends of the string to stop it from unwinding. It's hard to tell from the pics but it appears you used flush cutters to trim the tails off of the cable ties to prevent scratches should you have to work around them. Talk about attention to detail
