Hi, i'm new to this forum and LS motors in general.

I have a E36 BMW, that i have pulled the 6 cyl from and plan to drop a L98 w/T56 into.

I have heard that 1 or 2 may have already been done in aus, so if anyone has any onfo or links i would appreciate it.
I have read a bit about the LHD ones in the USA.

Main questions i have are
What sump did you use, and did it need mods?
What side did you run the starter on?
Pictures of mounts and pipes would be great.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Hi Glen,

Try www.roadfly.org a head for the BMW forums and you'll find the E36 section. Likewise www.bimmerboard.com (much friendlier commnity) and do search in the E36 section.

I've seen the LT1s in them, but not the L98.

Good luck

JOHN

I don't have any advice but I'd love to see a write up with pics once you're done, as I'm planning a similar conversion into a 560SEC merc.

I ended up purchasing a LS1 instead of a L98. I came scross one locally for the right price. I'll be starting on mouts in the next couple of weeks.

I need to find a flywheel/clutch combo first.

Have contemplated this conversion myself many a time and can pick up an E36 or even a E46 cheap!!!

How are you going about tailshaft/diff/brakes for the E36??

In the states they change the tail shaft to be a 1 piece item, so i will probably do the same.

Brakes, the local engineer will sign off on it with std brakes, but i will probably upgrade to some 4 pot brembo's down the track.

What model E36 did you buy?? Coupe or sedan?

1 Piece tailshaft should be simple enough, will definetely be keen to see how you go with this cos i'm keen as mustard to do the same in the near future, once you get the engine/gearbox mounts done, would love to see some pics!!

That's wicked, sits very low and far back which is great!!!

Did you fabricate the mounts yourself or if not, where did you get them done??

I designed it all myself, but i have had a friend weld it up for me.

Goes in this week to get a set of 4 into 1 1 7/8 extractors made.

Mate, well done!

If you get it engineered you could sell it as a kit!

An LS1 in a later model BM is a new M3 killer!

Did you happen to weigh the motor that came out of the BM? It would be interesting to compare it to the weight of the LS1.

I'll be watching this thread....awesome work! :bravo:

Thanks, the BMW 6 is a big heavy motor. They are very tall, hence why they are laid over from the factory. The bmw 6cyl + getrag box Vs LS1 + T56 is the same weight, within 10kg i'm told. The LS1 seemed lighter than the BMW 6cyl, but the T56 was 15-20kg heavier than the BMW getrag box.

There have been a few conversions done in the USA, and they come within 10KG of the factory weight every time.

I corner weighted the car before i did any work, and i will do the same again once done.

The car will be engineered-I have approval for a Mod plate already.

I was going to make Jigs of all my mounts, but i'm not sure how many i'd sell-I'll see how i go.

Thanks Glen

I recon one of these would make a great track weapon, plenty of E36's around for under 6k at the moment.. I'm looking for something different to do as a track car project so I'm going to keep an eye on this thread for sure.. Would make an awesome cruiser as well..
Apart from the engines are thereany other differences between the 4cyl and 6 cyl models

Pipes done!! We were going to go for a merge style collector, but it starts getting very spendy, so i just stuck to a pressed style one.

Glen75

Tailshaft is bolted in, and fits with not much clearance. I bolted the exhaust up, the centre muffler and rear of the tailshaft are trying to occupy the same spot. So the muffler is going to be scolloped on the top, to allow it to sit right up high and not kill my ground clearance.

Nice swap! The LS1 fits so well in those cars. I've been wanting to do one myself.

Another company that makes good parts for this swap is Vorshlag here in the US: http://www.vorshlag.com/index.php?cPath=1_4_63

Everything has now come out to finish 100% and then put back in for the final time.
Extractors will get ceramic coated, and subframe/engine/gbox mounts will all get powder coated etc.

I've spent alot of time doing things that cannot really be seen, like clutch and hyd lines, moving brakes lines, ceramic coating extractors, powdercoating subframe and mounts etc-It is all togther for the final time (I hope).

Ended up using a Mal Wood option 3 clutch set up and remote bleed.

Today i got the motor and box dropped in, If i had my time again, i would have made the extractors out of 1 3/4 instead of 1 7/8. There is no room for error when dropping the whole thing in complete with these pipes.
Had to extend a few wires on the loom, as they wouldn't quite reach. Will be working on fuel lines, power steer lines, clutch hyd line, wiring etc over the next few days. Hopefully still have it started before the weekend. (looks like it did 2 months ago, except now it is complete internally)

Progress-Motor runs, just small jobs to go until driving. :)

Today i knocked over some jobs that i have been trying to avoid for a while-just small shitty jobs like heater hoses. Problem was i couldn't mount other things, until these were done...

So heater hoses and 1x rad hose is done, will finish other rad hose this week. Need to design overflow bottle for it aswell...

A month or so i put the E36 M3 bilsteins into my E30, but i'm not happy with the bump travel they give, so these will go under the E36, and i purchased a pair of VE mono tube bilsteins for the E30 (along with a set of vorshlag camber plates).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2448/3643456322_fbe3ccaaaf_o.jpg

Since the heater hoses are now done, i can finalise the posistion of the fuel reg, and it's plumbing has been shortened. Next will be mount and shorten the wiring in the same back corner.

More pics.

(excuse shit picture quality-Kids took my digi cam to a birthday party....)

I plan on having the alloy intake pipe annodised black when the fab work is finished on it.

Still missing hose clamps etc on some parts, will chase up small parts like that this week.

The Germans very much agreed - they even started dropping allow V8's into their new M3's...........The next model will no doubt be stroked or bored a little for power growth path.....which should mean that BMW might catch up to this one by the 2034 model in terms of displacement LOL

Hi Glen,

Fantastic car - great job!

A mate and I have just purchase an E36 328i convertible to do the same conversion.
We have looked around at the conversions being done in the US, but noted that the engine mounts appear to be offset to clear the brake booster.
Did you have to do this the opposite way being RHD?

Our preference is to mount the motor centrally, but still hunting down an LS1 so we don't know all of the fitment pitfalls yet.

If you made jigs for your mount kit we may even be your first customer!
Would also be interested in extractors if the exhaust shop made notes when they built yours?

Here's the recipient that doesn't know what's about to hit it...

Progress

Overflow bottle done
Radiator and overflow lines done
ABS lines welded
Fuel regulator mount done
Exhaust tip done
Intake pipe and air cleaner/box done

In the process of bleeding the brakes/clutch today, and then all i need is a radiator cap to suit the alloy billet filler next (I think stant make one to suit) and finish off some wiring, and i'm ready to take it for it's first drive.

I was planning to make it all OEM look, but the fab work in the overflow bottle/expansion tank is too nice to go and powdercoat black as i planned....

Small problem-Pulling out of the driveway i realised it has no brakes :O. Well very little in the way of retardation anyway, so just a small run up and down the street :knock:.

I just gave it 3/4 throttle 1st-2nd-3rd. Has some serious grunt compared to before. :w:

Now off to look at what is wrong with the brakes so i can give it a proper run

I had some new heat shields made up for the engine bay which came up very neat, and also mounted another Fan on it. Mounted my Gauges inside and purchased a new alarm/GPS tracking unit for it.

Had some hard lines made up for the heater lines, as they were running too close the exhaust manifolds, this way they are deflected well out of the way and away from heat.

I also picked up a M3 front bar, skirts, splitter, doors moulds, rear diffuser last night, so i'll have to get them painted soon and drop them on.

I've driven it about 40km so far, it is ****ing awesome to drive (mind you i have been driving a 318 E30 for the last 6 months, so anything will seem powerful compared to that :knock: )

M3 sills are painted, but waiting on the fit kit to come from the USA before they go on. Booked in next wednesday to get the air con lines made, and AC up and working.

Yes, new rims are over $1000 ea, made by BBS for BMW. So these are 2nd hand-I'll get it fixed down the track, not a priority atm.

I'm keen to see some more pics and even videos of this when you're ready (start up, drive by, etc).

My father-in-law recently did a V6 Ecotec conversion into an old E34 (I think is the model) - goes likes the clappers! I tried to talk him into an LS1, but he wasn't up for it.

Yours looks great and I'll be sure to show him this thread next time I see him.

Must be awesome to drive!

You will deffinately need to do something about those tiny brakes though. The Standard Holden one's are bad enough and yours are even smaller... Maybe look at an M3 kit....?

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. For those that are concerns about the small brakes, they just look small due to big rims, they are actually 286mm Verus VT brakes that were 296. Add to the fact the car is approx 400kg lighter and she still pulls up very well. I agree that bigger brakes would certainly be better, but it isn't 'under braked' for now. the V8 didn't add any weigh over the old Cast iron 6 cyl that came out. The finished car is within 10kg of standard.

It is an awesome car, and i really enjoyed building it, but unfortunately she is up for sale. I have another project that i have committed to.

No not shopped, it is an early 60's Bently, you may notice various other 911's etc that have been washed out of others pics also. Fairly pimped out place where the pictures were taken -not my place :-( .

Thanks. Motor is stock, so it is screaming out for a cam swap. It already have big intake and exhaust, and a strong clutch. So a cam would be icing on the cake.

Car is for sale, so i will leave it to the future owner if they choose to do that. With the car being 400+KG lighter than a c'dore it isn't really needed, but would be nice.

Your new project must be a pearler if you would sell this beast to fund it.

Very worthwhile conversion into a car that can actually handle the power.

Whats it like traction-wise? Does it get the power to the ground?

Yes, next one will be special :)...

Traction wise it is surprising good, but i think the 3.15 diff gears help that. If you feed the power in smoothly, it just has the slightest slip, and the back really tucks in. If you give it a bit of a poke and get a bit happy with the clutch, it just smokes the tyres.

Reality is i enjoy building them more than driving them or owning them.

Yeah i went through that also, last one i had was a full elcon converted FG BAJA, with billet reed ported 27cc motor, 4wd collari's etc.... Was silly $$.

Still weighing up my options, but i'm tending to think either a chrome bumper 911, 930, 356 or a Ultima.....

Change of plans. I'm going to Sell my SC6 VX Calais S2 instead, and keep this.

Which means i am now in the market for a cam and maybe some heads down the track.

I will also look into some diff gears, and may look to take it down the track soon enough.

Hi mate,

Great work on the car....

Just wondering if you made more engine/gearbox mounts or if you made a jig to replicate them....

Looking at doing the same conversion in mine, but trying to save myself some time and effort.

Let me know if you can supply them and a price mate.
