I have the chance to buy a 2004 Monaro, it seems to be the last of the models that came before the ones with bonnet scoops.
Can anyone tell me the differences between year models, from what I can gather the early ones were VX and later VY/VZ ?
What as the difference between the one I am looking at and the bonnet scoop ones, I know the fuel tank was different but what else ?

A 2004 would be a Series 111, some would say the best one.
Monaros came in 4 stages of tune 225,235, & 245 ( S 111), & VZ (with scoops) 260kw.
Series 111 has better paint & proofcoating than earlier models, & you get the later model dash. There's no electric radio aerial, as it's in the rear screen. Overall, a VERY good package.
Cheers, Pickles.

Add to that VZ's got revised split exhaust, larger brakes C6 caliper (320x 32 compared with 296x28 front) and new brake cylinder and master cylinder to kick in ABS quicker, different power steering pump, M12 gearbox for manual & 4l65 for autos and the fancy pod mounted on the dash.

hehe some would, but i like mine.
2003 VY series 2 CV8R Monaro. Only came in Turbine Grey, and only 350. Well thats how many were built, i know a few have passed away. Non coloured dash, light tan leather. Has normal powered aerial which is good if you have a thick metalic tint. Smooth shape with no bonnet holes. Cats are under car so can run long 4 to 1 without extensions. Single exhaust outlet. No sunroof. Standard holden assist. Also has the bigger boot unlike later models.
If power is down ive got no idea how much difference it makes. Brakes are still standard, comes with different rims, tails lights, few other things.
Few things that can be upgraded easily to upperspec models whilst still being easily reversible.
All fairly similair.

Yes and no. First limited edition series nope only Turbine grey. Second series CV8R which were series 3 models and i think 300 of them, came in red with a sunroof too and few other things.

There was no VX or VY Monaro....
(Commodore) Monaro
(VXII 01-02) V2 - 225kw, VX Interior
(VY 02-03) V2 SII - 235kw, VY Interior, new wheels (350 Turbine Grey CV8-R)
(VYII 03-04) V2 SIII - 245kw, no more CV6 (320 Pulse Red VC8-R)
(VZ 04-05) VZ -260kw, bonnet scoops, twin outlet exhaust, fuel tank in boot, bigger brakes, new bodykit and wheels (CV8Z model to finish off production run from mid 2005)

Yep.
Basically, V2 series 1 is the cheapest to get into by far lately, as most want the later V2 series 2 onward VY interior, rather than the bulkier VT type dash.
Series 2 was the last of the "totally Australian" Monaro's. V2 series 3 losing the electric aerial and getting the clear coat paint was purely for the export markets demands, the former due to regular vandalism, the later for acid rain and salt issues (for snow) in those markets.
VZ (V2 designation was dropped) went to the in-boot fuel tank to simplify production, as by that point, most production was being exported, not sold locally. It gave the rear view a nice look with the twin exhausts, but the boot will only take about 3 boxes of Cornflakes though!

Series III on also got a revised shell which is not apparent - Monaro was already stiffer than a sedan, got even stiffer but not the relocated tank of the Pontiac GTO, which came in for VZ. It was this model that scored 4 stars in ANCAP - but the earlier ones probably would score similar. There'd be nothing in it.
Topgear, 5th Gear and some other reviewers picked up a difference in weight distribution/handling in VZ and 6.0 HSV GTOs due to relocated vertical petrol tank, but I wouldn't think that's a biggie and probably worst with a full tank. VZ also picked up 90kg IIRC (bigger brakes, exhaust and a few other bits'n'pieces like the protection frame on the fuel cell.
I think the CV8Z missed out on a few bits like the autodim mirror and possibly alloy pedals - that was during the Mooney economy drive era (not fuel economy...).
Other than that, recommended fuel went to PULP on VZ for the only non-supercharged Holden to need it.

Can someone tell me... does a Monaro (VY or VZ) have rear fold down seats?
Want to be able to put a surfboard thru from the boot... the VE's only have centre fold down.

Also (as stated in the Holden sales brochure for the VZ Monaro) the VZ Monaro recieved a revised camshaft which enabled it to produce 500Nm of peak tourque lower in the rev range @ 4000rpm. You can actualy feel the slight rock n roll at idle ever so slightly. The VZ felt more muscular than the smooth quiet Series I, II, & III Monaros. Yes I did own a VZ 6spd Monaro before trading it in for the VZ GTO. I actually prefered the Monaro over the GTO. So when it comes to engine differences between the VZ and the rest of the range it was more than just different "stages of tune", the VZ ran a different camshaft. I munched plenty of exhaust and intake modified series I,II, & III's with my VZ.
I think the CV8Z missed out on a few bits like the autodim mirror and possibly alloy pedals
No the CV8Z got the alloy pedals, what it missed though was the alloy footrest (for some unknown reason, seriously did Holden save that much $ by doing that?). And yes it did miss out on the auto-dim rear view mirror.
All that said stock for stock if you want the quickest and most enjoyable to drive? I would go with a VZ Monaro hands down. But if it was my money and I was buying a Monaro again, I would go for a 2003 CV8R in turbine with the cream interior. They still look great today. Nice 2 door grand tourers.

Same guards, bar the missing aerial hole. They just had a GTO badge on the guards to cover the indicator holes.
