If I was in Brisbane, I would swap you. I got Auto so my wife could drive it, she never has and won't and I wish I had got a manual.

Hmm, not a lot of forethought in the car buying process by the looks of it....

As Dave says, it will cost you a packet, so if you're that desperate, maybe a trade-in or swap for an auto will be the most realistic way to go.

Either way, it is going to cost you a fair bit of coin.

Goint to watch this thread with interest.
I have an M6 i'm having issues with, and Holden wont come to the party as i have installed a mal wood opt.3.

My Mrs is now sooking the VE's not an auto so she can drive it. (The reason why i got a manual in the first place was so she couldnt)
Thinking of going auto to keep the peace, or there go's forced induction later this year.

How much pfafffing about would there be to put a powerglide box in?
Has it been done yet?

I love my parents but i'd be telling them to drive their own bloody car or at least buying them a cheap auto car.....manual HSV ftw :)

Much cheaper and easier to sell the manual and buy an auto. I have heard (not sure how true) that the A6 autos have now come down to around the $6k mark to buy, and that's before anything else!

Exactly the same happened to my mate. After owning several manual HSV's he decided to get an auto VE clubsport so his wife could drive it. Two years later she never has and he regrets being stuck with the auto every day.

I don't see a problem.....can't drive manual = cant drive......unless they paid for the car!

The same happened to me with my old VYii SS. The missus wanted an auto so she could drive it and would only let me get the SS on those conditions. She drove it less times than fingers on one hand and then we separated. So I was stuck with a crappy 4sp auto that I never wanted to the first place.

Thats probably why we broke up in the first place...so don't do it you'll just end up hating each other...

Lesson: The wife/missus needs to have their own car :bravo:
I think it's better than the other half can't drive my manual car :goodjob:

Been down this track. original plan to install 4L65E in new VE....slot in the mighty Comp , an run some numbers....But not even close to viable $$$ wise imo which only left the revered 3 speed.....and it didn't take too long to work out that I'm not turning a new car into a piece of you know what ...

i would hate to imagine what costs are involved as not sure if you need computer change console and the labour.

If it's going to cost at least $6,000 for the auto box alone, plus other parts, plus labour, that's insane. As Blackbetty said, swap it if you can, trade it if you must, or also said by others, considering how much it's probably going to cost to change over, an automatic used car, might be a viable option. You get to keep the manual that was your choice when you bought it.

im not sure id go out with a girl who couldnt drive a manual! ha ha

you know it works with couples ... you attend a party together in same car, and havent yet worked out whos driving home ... so the first to get trolleyed usually wins the pasenger seat ... no good if "i dont drive manual" trumps you every time!

Ha too true. My new girlfriend loves to drive a manual and everything is great...maybe that could be a new relationship behavioural study...happiness equals partner likes same transmission type :goodjob:

Mate Don't do it you will regret it and it will cost a packet. Simple solution - don't let them drive it.

mate id just tell them to buy a cheaper car for them to drive , my neighbours brother has a similar problem and hes looking at putting the 4 speed auto in his ve r8 ( well..he wants to anyway..not sure if it can be done)..he likes the 4spd better. each to their own!

Well I have a auto, am will to swap.

So it would just be the cost of swapping everything across?

darb
26-02-2009, 10:27 AM
why would you perform open heart surgery on an almost new, VE R8??

dont do it mate ... its like knocking all the walls and bathrooms out in a house thats just been built just so you can have the toilet in a different spot ... swap entire car mate.

sounds like there's more to it than just whether they can drive it? they own it or something?

i daresay there'd be more than physically fitting it ... computers / engines / engine control systems, body control modules etc would all need to be reprogrammed too.

Its not nearly as hard as many are making it out to be - I've done it on a few cars on jack stands in the garage. Then again these are usually $15K 10 year old Jap imports not a $60K+ HSV. Its basically gearbox, pedal box, tailshaft, clutch, clutch mc + slave and lines. Some cars then require computer and dash cluster (most don't). Easy under $2K if you use parts from a wrecker.

However I do agree with others that on this PARTICULAR car it is a waste of time and money (parts are going to be very pricey if you want genuine VE parts).

Most simple thing to do is SWAP the entire car with someone else - I cannot stress how easy this would to be as you basically want the "undesirable" option (auto) and the others are all frothing about the mouth for a manual - you should even get cash your way. Too easy.
