Really duno if this a porky pie or not,but had to ask.
Got an email today showing somewhere in South Africa, was of 10 x XY GT's & a lone (I think) HT SS Monaro.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
All these cars looked to be in beautiful condition, although suffering from dust & crap from what appears to be,long term storage.
From memory there was a couple white,2 or 3 blues an emerald green, a bronze coloured a yellow & a red XY's. Plus 1 white Monaro with what looked like an SS badge on the grill.
Will post pic's tomorrow.
If this has already been posted (did a search) my appologys & plz delete.

No one really knows the full story. I received that email about 2 months ago :yup:. Someone mentioned it was part of a drug bust but who really knows:confused:.

It's a repost of a repost of a repost, on FF anyway, the story goes that a couple of blokes went around Seth Efrica looking for GT's to send over here and kill the pig. There were pics going around as well but I would say that most of them were picked up off local enthusiasts. I think at one stage they were offering the lot for a million dollars.

But I do seem to recall reading something dodgy about the whole deal...

from memory the article stated that they were not actual GTs, Fairmonts with some added extras apparently.

Yes you are on it. There was a lot exported and there has been quite a few imported back in to Perth, They are always for sale in the local rag as "off the same production line as the HO's" but they were fairmonts with GT badges and 351, man or auto and 9".

South African "GT's" aren't recognised by GT clubs in Australia, so the value would be minimal at best. I believe the optioned up fairmont info is correct from memory.

The are badged "Fairmont GT's" because of some legacy issue they had back then with American built Falcons in South Afrikka but used the same 54H bodyshell as the Australian-market Falcon GT and same mechanicals, dash, steering wheel etc (NOT the GTHO spec stuff - just so we're clear on that). Some people try to say that they are the same as the GTHO-spec cars sold here, which is completely false. In a realistic sense, they are the same as the Falcon GT aside from the name.

Main differences were interior trim, badging and stripes as I recall. Not much else. Some GT clubs accommodate them, some don't. And because they were made here but in CKD form for export, they had a different VIN to the Aussie market ones which is the big giveaway for the trainspotters (for people trying to palm off a SA GT as the Aussie real-deal on the sly). An Australian market GT would have a JG33 prefix on it's VIN whereas a Saffa would have MS33 denoting it's different assembly place but still the same car.

A mate of a mate  told me that he was able to get a couple for $13,000 each landed. Don't know whether he went through with it or not.

There has been someone in South Africa purchasing all the FAIRMONTS "GT" AND HOLDENS ........I personally had a HOLDEN which had the 4 headlight grill Which was refered to as A CHEV SS , bought of me a few years ago as scrap, no papers , rego , no licence.Only to be notified by South African PORT AUTHORITIES that the car is destine for AUSTRALIA but there is outstanding License fees!!I started calling around and was given the "OWNERS" number telling me he bought the car LEGAL.........I informed him that the car was legally on my name and that If he was going to export it he would have to pay the outstanding fees , failing this I WOULD CLAIM THE CAR!!!Needless to say he mad arrangements to settle.I later found out the car was sold for $70 000 AU
IT WAS A 72 MODEL WITH 350 MOTOR LS1 AND 4 SPEED MUNCIE BOX WITH 12 BOLT REAR!!! MY MOM PURCHASED THE CAR NEW IN 1972 FOR R 1850!!! ABOUT $12 000 AT TODAYS EXCHANGE!!!!

The "Monaros" were CKD kits exported from Australia and built in SA until about 1973/4. The early ones were Monaros, but the later were Chevrolet SS with that ugly front. From memory they were 308 or 350. The 308's were stockpiled before HQ release and the 350's were imported into SA like the 12 bolts. All body shells were manual shells from what I have heard, so even the autos got the Saginaw linkage hump.
