Sooner rather than later it will be time to change the tyres on my calais. It still has the standard bridgestone tyres on it and the car has done 28000km.
ATM the tyres are still ok but when i do change them i am looking at going bigger. Since getting tune and otr regardless of ESP being on the car now loses a lot of traction of the line and when going from 1st to 2nd gear.

I was thinking of getting 255 at the front and 285 at the rear. Car is at standard ride height and has the 20 inch supersports wheels.

The other thing i have noticed is that on the HSV's the 275 tyres are lower profile then the front tyres any reason for this?

Can those who have similiar tyre specs to what i am after tell me the difference and improvements with handling ect...

Thanks,

The reason the rear tyres are a lower profile is due to their width being greater. As profile is a percentage of the width of the tyre, to keep the overall rolling diameter the same, the profile of the back tyre needs to give it the same/similar sidewall height.
There are some calculators online that'll tell you what profile tyres you need to go with the size and width you want to keep everything within normal limits for your speedo and ABS monitoring unit

Check the below web site
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

Start by entering the stock car tyres. (what the car was sold with from new with correct profile, width etc)
Then enter your preferred new choice normally front first
Find the right profile so the speed is the same or with 1% but max of 2% no more.
Then start on the back options with with the new front width and profile you have found.
It will tell you min and max rim width, diameter, speedo % difference. The rim width will vary depending on the profile of the tyre.

Front to back should be the same or 1-2% otherwise ABS, Stability control and other electronics could shut them selves off.

Here is a few I worked out based on my cars but yours may be slightly different being VE as they have higher profile from the factory compared to previous models

255/35 (min rim 8.5)
295/30 (min rim 10 inch)
Expensive brands only

245/40 (min rim 8 inch)
275/35 (min rim 9.5 inch)
Tyres cheap and easy to find.

There are other 245 series options but I have 9 inch rims front and 10 inch back.

255/35 (min 8.5 inch rim)
285/30 (min 9.5 inch rim)
1.1% diameter difference front to back 255 only expensive brand tyre

265/35 (min 9 inch rim)
295/30 (min 10 inch rim)
1.3% so slightly over preferred front to back radius and both tyres are expensive tyres.

265/30 (min 8.5 inch rim)
275/30
Both cheap and easy to get tyres.

As listed above and even ive been told from tyre places its not recommended to fit wider than the 245's to the 20x8 supersports, if you want wider you really need to buy a new set of wheels!

Does anyone know what are the biggest tyres that can fit on a 20 x 8 Rim?

I spoke to someone at a tyre shop and they said they could squeeze a 275 width tyre on the rim. I also did some reasearch on the net and found some people have put 295 width tyres on 8 inch rims with good results, though this was on 17-18 inch rims not 20's.

Thanks for that XUV, that site is helpfull. According to the site I can upgrade to 275 on 20's without a problem. I dont think it would be wise or safe to go any wider than 275.

if you want width , go 295 on 19's .
19'' GTS rims are cheaper too .

foot note - missed the bit that you already had 20's
