View Full Version : VE SS vs. SS-V

Guys,
Toying with the idea of an upgrade to a VE sometime in the near future. I am after some thoughts and opinions on SS vs SSV. Obvsiously SS is a bit cheaper option, but SSV gets you more 'stuff'. Is the extra cost for leather and 19" wheels (ok and the in-dash screen with dual zone etc) worth it??
For me, I am not sure I want to go the leather route which would rule out an SSV (and SOME SS). But having said that, im usually the kind of person who has to have the highest spec of things i buy.
I guess I am after some ppls ideas etc on weather the things like the dual zone climate control, 19s, leather etc etc are worth the extra cost to them and why?? At the moment im seeing (for early model VE 06-07) at least a 5K difference (from cheapest SS to cheapest SSV) in price.
Thanks for your replies.
Chris.

I thought it should come dow to what YOU want.. Do you want leather, do you want DZCC, 19's? Just because one may say its not worth it doesnt mean he/she is right, or vice versa...
I bought the SS over the SSV because i had a car previously with leather and DZCC etc, and it didnt make my driving experience any more pleasant. I havent looked back since...

difference between the two from memory is that SSV has:
Leather
19s
DZ CC
projector headlights - very much worth it! especially with HIDs
rear black tailights
in dash screen - can use for DVD, sat nav, etc etc
alloy faced pedals
more airbags due to the fact the leather seats
a red V badge
premium sound system
all comes down to personal preference at the end of the day

if i could afford it i would have gone an SSV but im happy with my SS. The only thing i would want is the indash screen. Lights and rims can be upgraded easy.
You also have to take into account resale value, i think the SSV will hold its value better down the track.

Like everybody is saying, it's all personal choice.
For me though, I sat in the SS and thought to myself 'tacky', pretty much straight away. The SS-V was an easy choice even though there was 5 grand difference.
Didn't want the 19s, I told them they could have delivered the thing with 15s for all I cared and taken the money off the price tag.... needless to say, they didn't.
Love the DZCC and the leather.

I went through this when I bought mine and decided SS with the leather option was the way to go - the SS looks pox with the cloth trim IMHO but the leather makes a lot of difference.
I didn't care for the 19" alloys or the projector headlights etc and I don't like climate control, so for me it came down to whether I wanted to spend another $4500 for a nicer looking centre console and better sound system.
I decided that I didn't...and now that I'm a family man, I can't have the sound cranked too loud anyway so I think it was a good call :)

yeah i guess realistically i would prefer an SS-V. the leather i can deal with, but all the other differences that the SS-V has over the SS are attractive.
depends how desperate I get to upgrade haha if i can hold off a little longer I guess I can afford to go the SSV. they do seem 'that bit nicer'.
but i guess there is that option to 'settle' for an SS. would i regret it in the long run?? maybe.
Had the SS for a while now and no regrets.
Chose SS over SSV. Could have had either.
Didnt want leather.
Climate Control not an issue as 99.9% of the time its just me in car.
Dont mind the SS sound system. Good enough for me.
Wouldnt have minded projector lights.
$5k for a sound system and headlights? Nah.

For me definitely SSV! I love the leather and dual zone climate control even though I'm usually by myself in it - just set the temp and forget it. The SSV interior with the big screen looks so much nicer (IMHO) and the projector headlights are much better for those looking to go HID headlights. (Apparently around $1,200 to buy if you want to upgrade to projectors I have heard, so not a cheap upgrade!)

Personal choice i've bought 2 VE SS's new and went that way due to bank for buck equation i've got a cammed SS with otr and full exhaust for price of SSV
PLUS no leather:goodjob: hate holdens cheap leather as i type this on my nice comfy leather lounge
Resale in future i think SSV will be worse off(seen one here for $34000 with 40000km's)

I went with the SS with leather. At the time I could not justify the extra 7K (in 06') for the extra gear.
Biggest downside of the V for me was the expense of the 19 inch tyres. It sees the circuit and I did not want to be shelling out for 19's all the time.
BUT if I had my time over I would get the V for the stereo (just upgraded mine) and the lights look the biz, and negotiate hard on the price.
Oh well live and learn... and its just as fast!

I've had a VY SV8 and thought the seats were very ordinary - basically just Exec seats - no support. Would much prefer the SSV seats even though the side bolsters aren't as big as in my VZ SS.

Should be fractionally quicker as weighs slightly less but if you were to randomly line up 5 of each direct from the factory you'd probably find due to differences between individual cars that the SS would be quickest in 3 cases and the SSV in 2. Stuff all difference really.

Yep, same as I did with the SSV sedan, I've already got new rims and tyres organised for the ute so when I pick it up it will be driven straight from the dealer to Black Diamond's tyre store to get them put on and hopefully he will have time to lower it too. Anybody after some virtually brand new (probably 20km on them) SSV rims and tyres? :)

I bought the plain SS ute, bought SSV projector headlights $290 ea from Holmart (sold the originals for 180ea) also bought 4 New SSV rimes tyres plus mini spare for $1904, and sold the 5 SS rimes/tyres ith 50km on them for $2000. Bought a V badge frm my local dealer for $17.
So for a total outlay of under $200 my ute looks IDENTICAL to an SSV from the outside. Plus I prefer the cloth seats, and basic HVAC/radio is apparently more reiable than the Hollywood SSV units.
Admittedly though the sedan costs more to convert. Also remembr it costs Holden a couple of hundred max more to make an SSV than an SS. Which makes the SS better value.
But its personal choice really, and obviously alot of people seethe extra $6k value in the SSV as they are a bigger seller.

At first I thought I would go the SS because of the price difference but after thinking about it for a couple of days I knew that everytime I got into the SS I would be looking at the cheaper looking interior and would have a quiet little tanty. As others have said the wqheels didnt bother m because they were changed before it came out of the yard. I ended up getting a low K demo SSV for less $'s then the new SS. Now that I've put 10k on it I wouldnt even notice the demo k's.

not bad but remember the sedan ssv get standard front and rear pillars with airbags that the ss doesnt. Important imo and you cant really convert an ss to put those in. I personally like the extras the ssv has but everyone is different.
i can only comment on ute ;
i looked at SS ute vs SSV ute ...
The differences are basically rims (standard SS rims , save as SV6 and ugly as hell IMHO) ... climate control and nice looking audio system, and better headlights (well im not sure if theyre better, but theyre more high tech)
Personally, i wanted different rims (supersport 19's), leather, rollbar and a nice chunky sports steering wheel ... and had to wait for mine to built anyway so went that route.
As to the climate control aspect, couldnt care less (its a ute) ... so really it came down to whether i had a really nice audio control panel and the more high tech headlights ... which when it came down to the several thousand $$$ difference ... just wasnt worth it (plus first thing i did is put amps, subs, splits into it ... and my car audio dude said avoid the SSV deck as its a nightmare if you want to customise ... though i dont really understand that issue.)
i.e i optioned the leather ( think theyre different to SS-V leather tho), rollbar, mags, steering wheel ... and the cost difference was probably around 1/4 i think.
The hightech headlights and flash audio definately looks pretty good, but not enough to put more coin into ... for me.
ps, ... get a kick ass stereo system installed in place of the SSV system for still way cheaper ... my mate has done this and its unreal, builtin gps, hdtv / dvd, phone / ipod control etc etc. I think its a kenwood.

I'd love to swap my leather seats for cloth. They are showing huge amounts of wear already and it's only a few months old. i ALWAYS try and hop in as best as i can without touching the side, I apply Zano leather protector every month and i'm skinny so not a fat biatch getting in and out.
But I wanted the SS-V for the climate and media screen.

that has always been my concern with leather. aside from the ongoing maintaining you have to do, most used cars i see with leather, the seats are trashed. side bolsters are cracked/damaged/ripped/torn etc and usually the leather is cracked and not looked after. that is something that woudl sway me to cloth in an ss. HOWEVER, having said that, leather if looked after carefully and maintained properly i wouldnt mind.
the other thing is, im still unsure if you replace the stock headunit in an SS ??

the other thing i was thnking about before is, any car i buy wether i just get an SS or spend that bit extra (which will push the budget) and get an SSV is that I have to factor in mods whichever way i go.
lowering...exhaust...cai etc etc all cost $$$ on top of the purchase. if i am lucky something will come with at least one of those already, but its something i have to consider. driving a stock car is not an option :P wether its an SS or an SSV!!

u cant really replace it.
u just basically dont use it and divert all ur speakers etc from it to an aftermarket headunit that u mount somewhere.
they are all integrated so a replace/swap solution like previous models isnt possible exactly

if u wanna do something with the headunit there are three options.
1) run speakers, amps, subs, etc off the stock headunit
2) run speakers, amps, subs, etc off the stock headunit VIA audio processor
3) run speakers, amps, subs, etc off another aftermarket unit which gets very messy
i did number 2 :D

the new SS is simply an S pack with a V8, the SSV is a little luxo and higher spec.
