View Full Version : 888 Engineering - practice day

888 Engineering is having their first test run of the FG Falcon tomorrow.
Is anyone on here going out to Qld Raceway to take a look? I know it's a Ford team etc etc but I think it will be worth a look - regardless of the brand you drive.
I plan to take a few pics if I get a chance.
I asked JW for a photo next to my R8 last week but he respectfully declined. He didn't seem to mind a photo with my CO's Evo IX but I guess that wouldn't raise as many eyebrows.
With the amount of rain we've had over the past couple of days the lap times will be relatively slow. People that know QR know the effect of rain through turns 4 and 5.
If you get a chance to get into the pits, you will see arguably the fastest/fittest (we trained them ;-)) pit crew in the country.
See ya there!

Was a good day out.
JW was hampered by a some technical difficulties by the look of it.
Lost power and shut down round Turn 3 early i the day, then again down the back straight later after lunch.
Was hoping to see a few out in the rain but it didnt happen.
I'll post some pics later.

Good pics Mozz,
Yea in all honesty CSP i was a little underwhelmed by the paintjobs on the cars - granted it's pre season so not all sponsors are on there (Well i hope not anyways, SBR in particular had bugger all on them?!)
I didnt' catch too much of Ingall racing, one thing that did confuse me was seeing Paul Morris heading out in an unmarked car (Same red & yellow - no sponsors). Seems like a bit of a waste of team resources seeing as he's retired and all - but thats just my opinion...
Top photos mate thanks ! Was spewin', I had the day off until 9am when they restarted the job we were on! Not quite enough rain unfortunately, so missed out. All good though. Job way more important these days.. Interesting to see that nearly all of the FORD guys dont have FORD across the windscreen now, as had been discussed in the off season etc.:goodjob:

And notice the 888 cars with the Hogs Breath logo in leiu of the ford badge on the front.. :)
lol.. skinfolds.. Mozz. .you have an unhealthy interest!
Bits and pieces I picked up on the day apologies if some of it has been mentioned before on LS1.com.au
Ford have pretty much been removed from the cars right down to approval to grinding down the rear ford emblem to allow alternative sponsorship.
Craig's skinfold now is what it was after round 13 last year - fit and ready to come out swinging, when I was talking to him about his fitness this year he yelled out to Jamie to have a second steakburger. Jamie is a little behind in the skinfold test at this point in the season and Craig is hungry thus very fit and keen.
DJR cars today were quickest, and acknowledged as such.
888 still has two cars left to build.
Used to be 1200 hrs to build a car, now down to 900 hrs.
Lots of adjusting to the new E85 fuel and not just car setup, includes strategies, pit practice etc
888 looking to provide engineering services/parts across both ford and holden
Public opinion is polarised on the hogs breath motif on the front of the cars - some love it some hate it particularly the die hard ford fans

Not ure if anyone else noticed this, but i noticed a significant decline (almost nonee!) of flames out the pipes into corners.
Nothing like years gone by :(

It's because of the E85 I understand, all fuel is burnt internally and none escapes.

what i noticed at winton on monday was the smell, the poping on changes up and it must be a ford thing because FLAMES where coming out the exhaust on most of the cars. pity i only had the phone for a camera:spew:
good job on the photo's fellas

That was my assumption too.
having said that in two of the photos i've posted you can see a glimpse of flamage :D - 1 in jason brights falcon, and the other i cant remember.
As it was the first test day I reckon there were a of cars needing better tuning which I reckon would resolve the flamage

It wasn't to bad a day, I was surprised that the teams didn't take advantage of the rain and get some wet weather testing - its not often they would have that chance to do testing in the rain especially for newer drivers.
As for Paul Morris driving - I would assume he will do the enduroes and would have been helping with the setup of the car for Tim Slade.
Funniest thing had to be Lianne Tander in the PCR pits with a Holden sticker plasted over her helmet (for those that don't know she is doing the enduros with them), anyway it amused me.
Good pics btw :goodjob:
Jamie said they didn't want to take his or Craigs car out in the wet as it then meant the crew had to spend a whole day getting the car looking schmick again. If the whole day had been raining then yeah they would have done it, but the rain was variable so they waited until the track had mostly dried before heading out.

I agree with 0va, Prime opportunity for some wet weather testing.
In fact the only car i saw out there straight after the wet was one of the SCA cars - not sure which ones (Slade or Ingall) I remember hearing him cut sick between turns 5&6, was an awesome sound hearing him snap 2 or 3 gears in such close succession - i'm guessing due to wheel spin?

Goes with some of the "interesting" angles on the back of the FG's...

It was interesting to note a few things out there.
Courtney was fastest.
Van Gisbergen looked to be trying really hard (too hard maybe?) and his times weren't too flash.
Alex Davison in the 2nd Stone Bros car was quicker than the Gis
Coulthard looked sensational and his times reflected it. He was magic to watch in a superb drift through the sweeper at the back of the circuit.
Lowndes was quicker than Whincup
Lowndes was quite clever as I noticed also he spent several laps practising his entry to the pit lane ready for next time.
The Supercheap VEs sound really hard and Ingall was 2nd fastest.
Here's the best of the day's lap-times

Hey Seldo, when ya say the SCA VE was sounding hard, what do ya mean exactly? IMO they didn't sound as if they were revving terribly freely - in comparison to Lowndes for example coming out of turn 3.

IMO they didn't sound as if they were revving terribly freely - in comparison to Lowndes for example coming out of turn 3.They had a really harsh, hard sounding bark - quite different to all the other cars - sounded really business-like...almost a bit like a flat-plane crank...
